Turning on Electric water heater sounds?

Hi,

I have a Bradford white 50 gallon electric water heater that is used mainly as a storage tank because my geothermal system creates all my domestic hot water. The other day I powered up the WH because of unusually high demand. About 5 seconds after throwing the relay it started to make a sound just like a tea kettle that is working up to a boil. Is that normal? The water was about 115 degrees when I turned it on. I don't think I've ever change the default setting since it was installed 8-2008 and this was the first time I powered it up. After hearing the sound it made, I shut it off.

Thanks,

Barry
