Making a rose obelisk using copper pipe
Comments (10)Thank you so much for the heads up Jackie, I'll now see how much the copper pipe and tubing will cost me! Jerijen, I don't think any thief would be bold enough to try and make it through my 'siepe rustica' - a hedgerow I devised because we weren't allowed to fence our property. I planted it in January 2012 and it's now about 1.5 - 2 metres tall - a mix of blackthorn, hawthorn, dog rose and fire thorn. Each one with thorns more vicious than the last - where there's a willâ¦â¦ :-)) Veronica, I'm attaching a photo of the tripod I found on the internet - it was on a DIY site (in German) - I used Google Translate to discover that the tripod is made from 3 lengths of 18mm (þ inch) copper pipe 2.5 metres (about 8 feet) long soldered together at the top and the spiral is an 8 metre length of 1mm copper tubing. One of my neighbours knows a blacksmith who has very reasonable prices so I will ask how much it might cost. I saw somewhere on another site that an advantage of using copper pipe to make an 'obelisk' is that you can hammer some steel reinforcing bars into the ground and then position the copper pipes over them so they will stay well-anchored (we often have very strong winds here so I need to be sure it won't be blown away). Thank you all ⦠Tricia...See MoreRE: Rigid copper pipe vs. copper tubing for A/C connection?
Comments (1)Don't use "L" for AC it is for water plumbing If you decide to go ridgid as some do, you can make some nice straight runs, pitfall is many more fittings to braze properly (notice I say braze and done properly with nitrogen purging) As far as the pipe goes you must use ACR tubing that is cleaned, dryed and capped. The weights of this tubing is available in "L" or "K" Make sure you also use refrigeration fittings not plumbing fittings and it is best to use long sweep elbows. Most residential installs use coils for ease, preinstalled insulation, and no or less fittings....See Morewhat fasteners to use to secure copper pipe?
Comments (2)The code requires that we use copper or copper clad fasteners on copper pipe to prevent the possibility of an electrolysis reaction between the dissimilar metals which could cause a pinhole in the pipe. If one were to be a complete purist the preferred fastener would be copper roofing nails or brass or copper screws, but in the real world galvanized roofing nails, steel nails, sheetrock screws or steel screws work fine. Even if there was to be an electrolysis reaction between the hanger and the fastener, the reaction is confined to the immediate point of contact so there is no detrimental effect on the pipe....See MoreCopper or CPVC to replace copper pipes?
Comments (8)"Is it necessary, or a good idea to replace the areas of the house that were not included in the remodel, since the house is 25 years old since it is M copper?" Yes, do a total replacement, as the copper has reached it expected life expectancy. CPVC is widely used in mobil homes due to it's flexibility and lack of out-gassing at the glue joints. "Also, the plumber wants to use several island vents, including one in a bathroom. He doesn't want to go through the roof." You need to have a short and serious chat with your contractor about quality of workmanship, because this is BS. "And yes I think this is all about the general contractor saving money, my husband is afraid that if we push him too hard about the pipes he will charge us more on change orders/items that he has completed, but will not give us a price on." In many states all change orders are required in the business and professional code, to be fully priced upon presentation for signature. But, why would you sign an authorization to proceed, without knowing what it cost? "We ask him how much adding or changing something will be, instead of telling us he just builds it without giving a price or change order. We have asked him several times to write it up, but he does not, Its really irritating and yes my contract states that he must give us the change order in witting, before he changes anything." If you know an attny. better yet where he lives, don't wait until monday, race over to his house and break in....See Morelazypup
