What's Your Favorite Electric Can Opener Brand

Need to buy an electric can opener. What do you suggest?

I used to use electric can openers for years and years. I used those under the cabinet ones, can't recall who made them. Black and Decker?

Anyway, after we moved to the new house, I didnt put my can opener up. I started using a hand held one and never went back. It's just easier, no big can opener to clean, no messy drips under the can opener....I just open my cans over or near the sink and it works better for me.

It'll be interesting to see what others say.

shaun, I do have a hand one now--I think a Cuisinart--but I have this hand thing going on--I think carpel tunnel--and it's very hard to do. Thank you for the suggestion!

Ohiomom, my grandma's apple masher is, I think, an early kind of food mill. It's got a metal cone with holes in it, a stand for the cone, and a wooden pestle designed to fit in the cone. You quarter the apples, cutting out the cores but not bothering to skin them; cook the apples till soft, put a bowl under the cone, dump the apples in the cone, and use the pestle to force the cooked apples through the holes. The apple sauce slides down the cone and into the bowl. The skins are left in the cone, and you scrape those out and do another batch. Then you taste test the applesauce and sweeten/add cinnamon as you prefer, and either can or freeze. It also works with tomatoes for making tomato sauce, but you have to cook the sauce down afterwards to reduce the liquid. If you google "apple masher" or "apple saucer" you can find them on antique sites. I recently installed about 80 recessed lights in a variety of sizes. in the kitchen I have 6 inch and 4 inch cans. i also used a few 4 inch low voltage cans - but not in the kitchen. I also have some 5 inch cans in the master suite. We have 10 foot ceilings on the first level - and that has to be factored into the housing size, placement, and number lights you design in. Most of the housings and trims were Juno. The thing I liked about the juno housings were that they come pre-nailed which makes them easier to install. SInce I did the install by myself - that was a big help. The Juno slide rails are very easy to adjust for different ceiling joist widths. the juno trims are nice for both the 5 and 6 inch cans. I used trims with baffles and spring hangers, and they secure nicely and look good. I like the way the Juno 4 inch trims look, but did not like the way the 4 inch trim kits fasten to the housing. Instead of hangers - the 4 inch trims have metal flex tabs that provide force against the inner wall of the housing to hold the trim in place. On a few of these - the trim popped off and hit the floor because the drywall was a little lower then the bottom of the housing. To fix, I had to trim the drywall and pull the housing down - then the trim kit held. We used the 4 inch cans above our bar and sink areas in the kitchen with either 35 or 50 watt halogen bulbs - the lighting is very nice. I also have 4 inch low voltage housings and trims by Contrast. They were harder to install than the Juno housings and the slide rail design is not that great but the quality of the trim and the seal against the housing was better then the 4" juno trims. I used the LV cans as accent lights above my fireplace and TV buit in which are in the family room. They have 25 watt halogen bulbs and throw off quite a bit of light - more than I expected. I could see these being used in some kitchen applications. The trim I used are like small turrets and allow light beam to be adjusted. The 5 inch cans I have in the master suite are very nice. I like these because you don't need as large of a bulb and they still provide a good amount of light - so they could be used for a kitchen, especially if the ceilings are lower than 10 feet and you think a 6 inch can will look too big. I used the large cans in the kitchen to illuminate work space areas. In areas wre I needed more focused ligthing - such as above the kitchen sink - I used two 4 inch cans. Same thing for the bar - I used four 4 inch cans. I put all the can lights on dimmers to balance the lighting. These dimmers are remotely controllable so I can change scene's depending on how the rooms are being used. Hope that helps.

I have the Wave Touch 70 series and while I don't know exactly what "Gentle Tumble" is, I can tell you that I absolutely love the Perfect Tumble feature on the dryer. It reverse tumbles the load and makes sure it's not tangled up when you remove it. I also like the extended tumble feature, which tumbles the load with cool air until you take it out. This feature is adjustable, so I can make it tumble for up to three hours after it's done drying. This allows me to take the laundry out and fold it when it's convenient for me. If I wait till the load is fully cooled and has tumbled a bit, it doesn't get wrinkled in the basket while I'm folding. With my old dryer, I'd dash to the dryer as soon as it went off, and it would take some fancy maneuvering to make sure that things didn't get wrinkled in the basket. A feature I like very much in the washer is the shrink guard. It tumbles the load after the last spin, fluffing it up a bit. I have fewer wrinkles in the laundry with the new pair. As to the number of cycles, I admit freely that it's a ridiculous number. However, you have options within those cycles, and that means that I can get this washer to do pretty much anything I want it to. I don't use all of the cycles, but I can tweak the cycles I do use to my satisfaction, and I like that very much. I've had this pair for almost a year and a half, and so far I'm very happy with them. I'm a big fan of low voltage cans, myself. So based on kitchens with roughly normal ceiling heights and slopes, I go with 4" or 3.5" low voltage cans using MR 16 bulbs. There are bulbs by Ushio now that last 18,000 hours. Good quality MR 16 bulbs produce the best quality light for color (granite, tile, wood all look great) and excellent task light. You can dim them (save energy and extend bulb life). And the holes in the ceiling are small! But as I'm in California, they're not allowed for kitchens- if the job is getting inspected, that is. That's why I use the LLF LED bulbs (as referenced in other threads). As for manufacturers, I figure most are good enough. If you go to a local light store which knows that they're doing, they'll (hopefully) recommend ones which they've had success with for years- not to mention having gone through thousands of those cans with adequate success. I finally bought one about 5 years ago, when it got too hard to use the manual can opener. My current one is the cheapest one at Target - what ever it is. It's still working 5 years on, and when it dies, I'll get another inexpensive electric can opener.

I'm the same. I went through several electric can openers, seems like they only were sharp for a couple of years & had to get another one. I've used a hand can opener for probably 20 years, the same one & it still works well. It was a cheapie too. Don't even know the brand. I tried one of those rechargeable ones a couple of years ago that was highly recommended, but it didn't work well. I think it was just defective, but I didn't replace it.

Probably a year ago, on a road trip, we stopped at a road-side mall. The kitchen store had a large variety of hand-held can openers. Despite arthritis/carpel in both wrists, I found two models that I use with ease. Never have had an electric opener!

I have very little strength in my hands too but found a hand can opener that is so easy to use. Believe me, I can hardly crush garlic using the garlic press.

Anyway, hope you find one that suits your needs and sorry about your carpel tunnel.

I also have some serious carpel tunnel issues but I use a manual Swing Away, love the darned thing and it's easy even for me to use.

I've had a procession of electric can openers. They aren't tall enough or they are hard to get the can into and out of and they get dull quickly. The last one I got so frustrated with that I threw it in the trash, I didn't even take it to GoodWill.

Nope, it's a manual SwingAway for me, although I will add that Amanda has an OXO manual one that I can use pretty easily too.

another here who junked the electric for the old Swing Away....it's the best hand held brand....we have a drawer full at church from Farberwear to pampered Chef and the Swing Away works the easiest. But go for broke! Get the top of the line...might cost about $10...as much as the electric but works faster, easier and cleaner. I hate the fact that you can't clean the blades on an electric one! Yukko!

SwingAway for me, too. The wall-mounted one with the big crank is easiest to use, but in this house there is nowhere to put it, so we use a hand-held Swingaway. Can't beat it.

Never had an electric, but mom did. The blades were always gross.

Thank you all for your help. Below is the one I have now--Kitchenaid, not Cuisinart--that I have been having problems with--guess I should have read the reviews. So is Swing Away a brand name, and where can I get one?

Swing Away is a brand name and they do have different price levels. The top of the line hand held is maybe $15, probably less, LOL.

The wall mounted crank type is more expensive, but like Sherry, I have no place to put it.

I got my at the local True Value Hardware store, but Bed Bath and Beyond or any of their ilk should carry them.

I'm another who tossed the electric one ages ago. When I moved here, MIL's electric was still here. Most aggrivating thing I ever used. (It was a Hamilton Beach, and a total POS. I think DH threw it in the trash.)

The Swing-a-way, which I have now and like - is a lot like your Kitchenaid one. You might want to take a look at the Zyliss Lock-n-lift. It's also a manual, but it's more ergonomic. I know someone with severe arthritis who likes it a lot. I've used it at her house, and found it very comfortable.

I have the Hamilton Beach opening station. It is a can opener with a jar opener, one of those little knives to open those hard plastic wrappers that it seems everything is packaged in now a days and a bottle opener. I like having all those things in one spot.

Am I missing something? Thought post was about ELECTRIC can openers.

In any event, bought one of those "as seen on TV" things called "one touch" a couple of years ago. Since then bought one for everyone I know. They're cute and they work with about zippo effort and no mess. Just keep it in he drawer. Easy to find because doesn't look like anything else in there. Batter powered, but I haven't changed 'em yet.

Have seen many places but bought mine at Wal-Mart and CVS. About 20 bucks.
