Severe separation anxiety

Hi there...

I have been dealing with my dog's separation anxiety for years. And I am at the end of my rope. Today I took the kids out for a bike ride, and was gone for less than an hour. I left the dog in the basement, with all the doors latched. I came back to a note on the door from the dog officer that he had found her roaming around loose on the street. The basement door was shredded, but not to the extent that she could have gotten out. She is a shepherd-lab mix and the hole was about 6x8" around. I think the only way was that she opened 2 sets of doors in the basement to push out the bulkhead, then jumped over the gate in the yard. She also peed all over the basement while she was at it.

I know that this anxiety is just as difficult for her as it is for me. I love this dog dearly. But I simply can't live like this anymore. I have done all the behaviour approaches that trainers recommend. I talked to our vet who put her on doggie prozac andalprazolam. No effect.

I am debating whether I give this dog up (to whom? I don't know) or try one last effort and invest in a commercial grade crate. She has wiggled her way out of the retail grade steel crates. SO it would have to be INDESTRUCTABLE. And I think I would have to force her into it. I tried last summer reintruducing a crate to her. Tried getting her to just take a nap in a crate and she would not go near the thing. I threw hot dogs in and she wouldn't go in after them.

ANy advice? Anyone know of a very very god crate?

Yikes!! Your attempting to crate this dog is not a great idea. She is already demonstrating she can not deal with being in the crate..forcing her is just going to make this situation worse.
Can you give a little history on how you got your dog?
You stated you have done all of the behavior approaches that trainers recommended - can you be more detailed about what you have been told to do and what you have done and how it has failed?
I also need to know how many people are in your family, what your dogs days is like and how old your dog is...
How long has she demonstrated this behavior?
How long have you had her?

How long was she on the meds. Meds can take 30 days to kick in, and will NOT work if you are not doing alone training with her at the same time. And alone training takes dedication and time. If you are serious about keeping her, engage a good behaviorist to help you through the training and work with you at least weekly. You need a coach if you really want to help your dog. Put her back on the Prozac while your'e working with her.

One comment, and please don't take this the wrong way - in most cases when I see 'at the end of my rope' or 'at my wits end' the dog is returned. And that may be the right thing for the dog and for your family. You may simply not have the best environment and the time needed to help your dog. If you adopted her from a reputable adoption group they will take her back and work with her.

Hi Elaina You mentioned that when your baby Hannah passed away, you got very close to Rachel and that she became your little shadow. I think Rachel got used to and really close to you all, that now that she sees everyone going about their business, she is used to all attention. She probably feels insecure and that's why she wants all of you together all the time. She is very attached to you all. I don't think there is anything wrong with her. It's going to take time for Rachel to get used to seeing everyone doing different things and going to work or school. Just reassure her that she is loved and that daddy will be home later and that her older sister will be back later from school. I think what would help is giving her a wallet full of pictures, or make a small hand size book with pictures in it of the family, and everytime she cries or stays crying give her the picture book, and tell her that you all love her very much. Before Rachel's older sister leaves, have her give Rachel a big hug and a kiss and have her say,"I love you." After that just have her leave without staying and saying goodbye. Thanks for the thoughts and ideas. I think I just needed to sort through my own thoughts and "get a grip." The loss of Beauty and now Sawyer has been taking its toll on me. She probably will have a better time than we will!! I like that thought. As far as taking her with us, I would in a heartbeat if I could . . . she travels with us every weekend to our lake house and to any other place we believe she will be comfortable. This weekend involves hotels, nursing homes and 2-3 different houses. It's going to be stressful on us, let alone on her. You're right, tho, it's not a true family event without the whole family!

Well I don't know what to tell you other than it sounds like the crate that was used was either not sturdy enough or not assembled properly. I have an adopted dog that used to get very anxious when I would leave. To this day he often curls up by the door that I walk out of and waits there the whole time by the door until I come back but not always. Before he demonstrated he could be trusted alone in the house he had to stay in his crate. I made the crate a very rewarding place to be because he got Kongs stuffed with peanut butter, slices of bread and other goodies to work on while I was away. Fun fun fun. And it involves chewing so he'd calm down. Then by the time the Kongs are cleaned out he's wiped out and in need of a nap. The crate should be used frequently before you actually have to leave the dog alone. Feeding the dog in the crate and giving him treats for going in there teaches the dog that being in the crate is a reward and not a punishment. It should never be a punishment. Dogs do not know what cages are. They see wire or chainlink like walls of their safe little cave. But humans know what cages are and have preconceived notions about cages being cruel. If this is the case, decorate the room that the crate is in with happy doggie related decorations so that there is a feeling of happiness that overwhelms any wire cage crulety feeling the dog owner may have. This is solely for the owner. After a while he graduated to bedroom and had freedom to the entire bedroom. Then eventually the whole house. Then it just becomes up to the dog. The first night I gave my older boy rights to the whole house and an open crate, he wandered around for about 30 minutes then guess where he decided to sleep.... He went back in the crate all on his own decision. These things take time. After a while the dog will start to figure out that the human is coming back. Setting up a routine helps.

Cynthia nailed it. Your dog simply is not totally housebroken. Dogs pee where they are used to peeing and the last thing we want is for them to get used to peeing in the house. So it's time to go back to the beginning of housebreaking, put on your overcoat and go back outside with her every time. Take a clicker and a few wee treats with you and praise her like crazy. Say your potty words for her. When she discovers that you're clicking and treating her for going she will start going really fast when you take her out. Make sure she's completely empty as best you can before bringing her in. Now look at your clock and her habits. Take notes. You already know she goes right after she wakes, so when you see her sleeping lay your coat out at the ready and take her out instantly as soon as she wakes. It takes at least six weeks to change habits, so expect to be going out with her every time for at least the next six weeks. During that time make it your goal to have not one single bad potty in the house. One bad potty re-starts your six week counter. It's not unusual for a dog her age to start backsliding, particulary when the weather worsens and we stop going out with them -- if that's any comfort to you. Either you really knuckle down on her now, or you're going to have a ruined house and a dog you don't really like. It's never the dog's fault though; it's always up to us to train them very, very thoroughly. We tend to give up too soon and that's our problem. So, happy slogging through the dark nights and the crummy weather! Just know that you're not alone. Dog owners all over the world will be shivering in the cold along with you. Hang in there and do it right during this first year and you'll reap the benefits for the rest of your dog's life. Cop out and you'll have the worst smelling house in town. :/

And do not crate a dog with SA, unless they are already crate trained. It's a comforting place for dogs who are at home in a crate, but horrifying for SA dogs with no crate experience.

The only thought that comes to mind for me as well is that it is very important where you put the crate when introducing the dog to it. When I first crated mine, I knew it was ****extremely**** important that that crate was very NEAR me. The dog has to know it is not being ostracized from the pack. Otherwise, it's just a punishment. More than anything, the crate should trigger a feeling of security in the animal.

We don't have crates anymore in the den, but at one point, I had 3 large crates in my den, and 2 were used as end tables. I could leave the doors open all day, and often find Rusty or Mocha taking naps in theirs of their own volition.

Ginger was another matter, she didn't ever really "take" to hers but didn't fight it. What I did find funny was that she would sometimes go into Rusty's to sleep. Ten years later she still follows Rusty like a puppy, and I think it was a comfort thing to her. If it had Rusty's scent, it was "safe".

I'll go a step further and say that if you do decide to try a crate again, not only does it need to be near you in the evenings, it needs to be moved to where you sleep at night. Our dogs sleep in our room on the floor. They feel like they are part of the family pack. If I were crating a new dog, that crate would get moved to my room at night also. You never want the crate to be seen as a method of pushing the dog out of its pack (you and your family).
