Here is an example from another list of how pound puppies incur expenses and the rescuer is spending out of pocket. The original owners are the cause of pound puppies. The person that took in the stray is not a rescue, but a reputable breed kennel with a full house of its own.

Well, I have complete idiots for neighbors...this I've known since the day they moved in. When they moved in they had a Siberian and a Mastiff. Now, they have 4 "Reindeer Chihuahua's" that they breed constantly and a Beagle puppy. Well, when they had the Siberian, she got pregnant and they kept 2 of her puppies. When they got the Beagle puppy I guess they decided that they had to "get rid of" the two puppies they kept. I guess one went to their daughter and the other, well, they "dumped" her. I've seen her running around for a few weeks now, and last week spotted her in a Wendy's parking lot scarfing down as much food from he trash cans as possible. Today, she attempted to come home and they wouldn't take her back in. So I managed to get her over to me and gave her some food. She is very thin, but is still very sweet and wants attention. I really don't have the space to keep her here, or I would. She is absolutely gorgeous. Can anyone

at all help? I really can't keep her. I'm going to give her a bath this evening and get some pictures of her if anyone would like to see her. If anyone can help, please let me know.

Now for that I think I would call the animal control. I loath people like that. Report them of abandoning their pet/breeding stock.

That is so sad. That poor thing manages to find her way back "home" and they kick her to the curb. Disgusting. I hope the neighbor can find a good home for her.

I would certainly report them, not that it would do any good. They will probably say she ran away, never admitting they dumped her and no one can prove otherwise.

One time at our shelter a man pulled up and kicked a dog out of his truck. One of our volunteers saw him do it and got the license #, but never saw the man's face. Since she couldn't identify him, they couldn't prosecute him. Unbelievable.

Meanwhile, the dog spent all day avoiding capture, but never moving far from where the man dumped him, just waiting for him to come back I'm sure. I came out there that evening and heard the story and spotted him on my way out so I stopped and grabbed another person and we spent almost 2 hours luring him with treats before finally catching him.

He turned out to be an absolutely wonderful dog who got adopted shortly after he was available.

I have no idea how people can live with themselves after dumping totally helpless animals. How do they go home and look themselves in the mirror? :(

Brendan, much as I admire your posts and viewpoints here, I think this time Oaklief needs an apology. Read her note again and the story about the 5 years - she said that 5 yrs after the (hospital?) had been told of her husband's allergy to dye he was given more of it, and then succumbed, not that he succumbed as a result of the original dosage 5 yrs earlier! In defense of the medical community in general however, I just want to remind people that while everyone involved with patients tries hard to do the right thing all of the time, humans being human (and tired) can and probably always will make mistakes. Doctors don't do it on purpose because they don't care, and/or are only waiting for their paycheck, it happens because maybe too many people are involved at any one time in a patient's care, all trying to 'cover' some aspect of care, and the chain of information may break at any one place on a given day. Sometimes the patient themselves, or the family needs to speak up and remind overtired techs about something like a life-threatening allergy. Of course in an ideal world the techs should have caught the 'caution' in the old chart. Maybe the charting procedures needed to be overhauled (big red stickers on the front of the charts apparently not being applied properly, or the chart just wasn't looked at by the stress lab people, who knows, but until humans become robots, such things, horrible as they are, will always happen and Oaklief's husband was just terribly unlucky that day. But it's not a reason to blame the entire well intentioned medical community of a country, much as doing so by the family is more than understandable. Do you think such things don't happen in other countries? That's pretty ridiculous! Anyhow, Brendan, do take a second look at OL's note, and Oaklief, I am very sorry about your husband, but bitterness against the entire medical establishment isn't going to do much now but continue to feed your unhappiness, so if you can manage to forgive, if not forget (that won't and shouldn't happen, of course) it just might help you to get on with life.

The thing about wrongly labeled trees is you want to keep the original tree and get another. Usually nurseries don't guarantee the correct identity of the tree, only survival. It would be a can of worms, in a way, to guarantee true to name as it would be difficult to verify. I used to manage a site where 50 Green Gage plums from Adam's County Nursery were planted that turned out to be a J. plum sometimes called Japanese Green Gage. Adam's take was home growers wouldn't know the difference and they weren't selling any to commercial producers so no harm no foul. They also said there was no established true Green Gage. Pretty shoddy reasoning from my perspective. These clients had tasted real Green Gage plums in France so the trees weren't worth much to them but the installation and maintanence cost them thousands of dollars. I consider Adams CN to be a good source of trees and like other producers for commercial production, they are usually reliably true to name. Stark also produces trees for com. pro. so my guess is that they are more reliable than many outfits that only serve home growers. I'd order from them way before going to Gurney or Millers for instance.

Linda and mazer, Those are the lines I was thinking of for a price. I was just shocked to see how much the rescues were charging. I had kind of stepped away from this thread because it was getting kind of ugly but I do want to add that I did find a "free" puppy and we love him so much and he is a hoot to watch. The young man that gave the puppy up had only had it a week when he was offered a job and had to make a decision. Evidently, when he posted the free puppy online he was swamped with people berating him for advertising for free, as only people who wanted pups for research labs and baiting would want it. Rescues "offered" to take it for the same reason. He also had a lot of offers to adopt the pup from people who had no idea what a blue tick hound was like. This young man was very concerned where his pup was going to go and when I went out to meet him he had his mom, grandparents, cousin and girlfriend there to help him make a sound judgement on who would be right for his puppy. Evidently, I was the only one that brought my dogs so he could see their overall health. I brought pictures of my yard, my vet bills and certificates and licensing for the pets. We talked for about an hour out in his yard after talking on the phone for that long too. The funny thing is the clincher for the puppy coming home with us was the fact I had worn my "puppy shoes" They are expensive sandals that have the straps all but chewed off by our Abby. When I started to look for a puppy I had figured my budget of around 500 dollars to get the puppy, give it's needles and be neutered. I was shocked to see that some places wanted as much or more for a heinz 57 pup that was a bit older because they took care of its initial care. I, wanted to be the one who did that for my puppy. Since I have looked for a "free" or low cost puppy people have assumed that I cant afford to care for one. Trust me.. my pets are pampered and are well cared for. jpw, it may be cynical, but it's realistic. I bet I've seen every one of these excuses on craigslist or in newspaper ads or on signs in the neighborhood; people who work in rescue probably do get cynical & burned-out, much as social workers get cynical & burned-out, & for the same reasons. I my own self once personally spoke with a woman who said she was going to start her own rescue, & she even had someone lined up to provide a maternity home for pregnant dogs & cat s, because....she didn't believe in abortion. & as for: "Press 10 if your relative has died and you don't want to care for their elderly dog because it doesn't fit your lifestyle."... I once was in line at the grocery store when a woman's cell phone rang & she blithely rattled off something like the following: "Human Services? yes, this is Mrs. Whatsis. I was calling to get my mother enrolled in Medicaid. She has to be enrolled in Medicaid before the nursing home will take her. We sold her house & she's staying with us at present, but we just can't give her the time she needs." then, with a touch of pride, "We have *five* children." oh. so neither you (fit-looking woman probably in her forties) nor any of your *five* children can take care of Granny?.. The only thing that gave me comfort was that her equally fit-looking daughter, who looked to be in her late teens, was standing by her side, absorbing every word, maybe storing it for future use when this woman got old.

Regarding the issue quoted there may be a law about backyard breeding. Don't just assume there isn't one in your area. That's what I did until I read the animal control codes now I know there are a lot of violations going on and it is about to get cleaned up so help me.

Regarding the topic, If a person wants to turn in a pet to a rescue group, they should pay the group for expenses and also for the convenience of the service. Yes, a profit. I said profit. As in, you do work, you get paid for it. This means the costs are not made up for by charging someone who wants to adopt an unreasonable fee.

Contact your local rescue groups and ask if they'll help you get her adopted. They may not take her, since fosters are scarce, but they will list her on petfinders and will allow you to show her on weekends when they show their dogs. Make lots of phone calls!
Below is a list of organizations in MA.

Only other option is to take her to your local Humane Society.

Same thing happened to my gramma. The people across the street from her got a divorce, sold the house, neither wanted the german shepherd as it was old. so they left her.

After seeing the poor thing waiting outside the house and roaming around the neighborhood, she and her next door neighborhood, tag teamed caring for the poor animal, each taking turns and feeding it in each of their houses. Until it finally died after a few years, cause it was old. At least that story had a happy ending.

People that don't take care of their animals are scum...

To reassure the posters, the dog was taken in by a caring person (not me, I do not live near there) and I am certain that person will ensure it finds a safe haven, if not with her kennel.

Querky, some rescues and others definitely do charge for accepting a surrender. Others do not because an uncaring person may simply drop it off on the street rather than pay one dime towards care. Tough call. I am glad I do not wrok rescue and have to make the call. Yep, everyone needs to make a profit and operate in the black, even non-profits.
