Which chair to go right next to the Huge burgundy recliner. The long sofa will go. My plan is to put a recliner next to the other one. At the end of the wall that the new recliner will go on I will place a narrow chest or even something smaller (plant stand) by the entry but one that same wall. As long as it doesn't block my t.v. viewing.

Here are some CL choices of chairs. I've also included 2 photos. One shows where the recliners will go. I added a shot of the left side of the room to get an idea of what is going on in the room

Also want to add there are 2 other contenders but I can't access the photos right now.. they are Not leather. They are upholstered. One is an overstuffed with Burgundy golds .. turned legs. Nice.
The other is a nice Neutral upholstered Recliner. Beige background with burgundy floral print. understated. Also up on nice legs.

Should I go with an upholstered print. or a solid leather?

Since the chairs will be next to each other, I rather think one leather and one fabric chair might not be a happy combination. Incidentally I really like the blue panels and how they harmonize with the picture and as a counterpoint to the red colors. I really hope you'll post pictures when the room is finished.

Ron, came across your post which I missed before...what a beautiful place you have. I am in the midst of planting shade companion plants, so appreciate your thoughts on light for the list you have. Hope you will keep posting pics! Oh, forgot...the potted hostas that you overwinter in the garage...do you have any special tricks for overwintering? I have done it 3-4 years now with about an 85% rate, but I'd like to improve on that because I do not like losing even one! I overwintered some out in our shed this last year instead of the garage, and the mice got into them and I lost a bunch. My biggest problems have to do with springtime moisture levels...I do not water them at all in the garage, come spring, I try to make sure at least 1/2 have broken dormancy before going outside. (Leave them in the garage too long, they dry out and die, water them in the garage, or take them out too early, they can rot.) Would love to hear how you handle yours. For this next year, I'm thinking about giving each small one an ice cube in Feb/March. Just to add some moisture back in as the weather warms up.

Okay, everybody, break it up! rjinga, I certainly meant no offense by my posting, I was just reminiscing about seeing these two paintings 'in the flesh'. I felt it was a totally magical experience, and get the same feelings everytime I see them, whether it be repro paintings, on a coffe mug, whatever. I think they look great in your guest room. Please humor me for a minute and try something. Would you consider swapping the pictures? They were painted by two different artists and are not a 'set', but Pinky is turned ever so slightly to her left and Blue Boy is ever so slightly to his right. By having them face each other, I get a sense of accord and harmony. Please give it a try and let me know what you think. Barbara

This old thread got revisited. @dani_m08 to answer the question about extra probe, I believe I ordered an extra one when I bought the set up. The probe wire is just setting in the junction box I think but honestly I cant remember. When I laid out the underfloor heating and the probe, I just ran another probe near the first probe, and it was then sealed into the floor self leveling compound as per instructions. then the end was just threaded into the wall like the one that would be live, and not connected, but just laying there in the box. Regarding the tile layout. I just decided to run it this way, after getting instructions on the 90Degree way, IIRC. The herringbone that I love is from my childhood and the side walks in my neighborhood that all ran at 45Degree. so that to me is herringbone. I know you posted on @sochi thread about her amazing bathroom and a wall mounted faucet. I would totally do it if I had the right sink for it. In my case I had made my sink out of soapstone and an integrated backsplash. The pictures of this bathroom reveal are no longer available because of the use of photo bucket, when it was Gardenweb. I did not keep my account with photo bucket. I'll add some of the reveal pictures so you can see the sink and floor. Regarding the sink there is no ledge for water to drip from my hands when using the faucet. The water drips right into the sink. In my other bathroom with a deck mounted faucet I am always wiping up drips and it is a nuisance. I much prefer the setup for this sink. Below: I love the flush finish from the faucet to the bottom of the sink. nothing drips on a counter or edge of a sink. Below: looking in from the doorway. Below: Here I am finishing up the sink. the backsplash was epoxied on as a separate piece. The whole soapstone install in the room took next to nothing to buy as they were all small pieces that I epoxied together with a 3 part stone epoxy. Below: this is the counter at the tub, and is in 2 long pieces but I was able to epoxy them together at there edges to make a wide slab for the top. All the soapstone was finished with a 60 grit sandpaper to be rough and this lovely soft tone of blue/green/gray/white. I did not oil it so this color tone would remain light. Below: If I recall correctly @sochi helped me decide on this Hubberton Forge Mirror. I have 3 different metals in this room, but they are all a cool silver to black color. Below: the center of this tower shares space with the kitchen on the other side of the wall. there is also some extra space that houses some electrical wiring. this is an old simple house. this bathroom was an add on when it got move to the farm in the 30s IIRC. The plumbing was all rearrange and some of the details that were orignially there I kept but updated it, such as this tower feature. The old one went and the carpenter did a wonderful job with this one. Below: This feature was another thing I kept from the old bathroom but flipped it from the other end and had the carpenter put drawers in it. Before it was a hell hole. things got lost and the build was soooo old and creapy I didn't like using it for storage. Now it is perfect for storage.

How urgent is your need to buy a house? Could you move into a rental while you look for something that meets your needs? There is a serious misapprehension about old houses that many people get stuck on. It's not an either/or proposition to live in an old house Tthere is no need not to have modern conveniences if you want them: this means electricity, running water, central heat, indoor plumbing, etc. You can often re-designate rooms to more modern uses; i.e. small rooms adjacent to bedrooms can become baths and former sitting rooms can become kitchens, for example. In a general way none of this is harmful to old houses, because it is reversible. However, what really is unfortunate about many remodeling projects, though, is the relentless desire to turn buildings that were orginally made up of distinct rooms into the vast, trendy, spaces that define the modern open plan house. You can see this playing out in the large room in the pictures with the fireplace and the tuructural members exposed by the gaping loss of the partition wall and the four windows in the ell which is a clear - and glaring - example. On one hand you have the lovely fireplace, with its (likely orginal) fireplace surround with delicate Federal-edging into Greek Revival period detailing. But by tearing out the wall and exposing the wooden structural pieces you have a jarring style collision. Exposed (and now empty) mortice pockets and rough hand hewn beams while they look old-timey to our eyes were not intended to be seen, ever. Even on very early houses, exposed structural beams (like summer beams or gunstock posts) often had careful dressing, and even carefully made beaded molding profiles. And then there's the bank of windows in the ell. That room is likely a much later addition (late 19th, early 20 or even later) and may even have had that bank of windows when it was orginally erected. But the look of an array of windows like that is not a match with the rest of the now-combined room. And keep this in mind: houses weren't "thick" as they are now in an era where day time light was mainly provided by windows. So while there were often rooms extended backwards in wings, the massing was often only one room wide, or just two rooms wide on either side of a stair hall. You don't have to choose against modern functions, but you ought to think twice about any impulse to turn an old house into a facsimile of a modern house that is vaguely styled to look like old houses. In other words, you need to understand that old houses, especially really old houses like this one, were always divided into smaller, distinct spaces. If you want a modern, open-plan house, then buy a modern house and decorate it with details that harken back to former styles. As for how you train your eye: well, books like the McAlesters' is good for classifying housing periods. The Midwest has its own set of building traditions, but keep in mind that early settlers to there were likely immigrants from NE and the Mid-Atlantic regions who brought their building traditions with them. At first, of course, they lived in settlement-period houses which were often small and primitive, but as soon as practical they built themselves better housing, an example of that style is this house. It may pay to study housing styles of NE and the Mid-Atlantic regions. Do you have access to a public library? I'd start there by borrowing - and sending via inter library loan- as many of the glossy- picture books showing houses from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Look at the size of the rooms, and study any floor plans. If you want to do this I could offer sme suggestions for titles that are especially useful. Another (though not with many pictures) excellent resource which every old house owner, including people who are considering buying an old building, should be familar with is the set of Preservation Briefs from the National Park Service. This series of essays is about caring for old buildings, from those of great historical significance (Presidential birthplaces, for example) to just ordinary old houses that are have become extraordinary simply by their survival. (I'll attach a link, below to this series. It will give you a working understanding of the issues surrounding older buildings which will put you light-years ahead of many old house buyers.) You do not have to live without modern conveniences; you do not have to spend endless amounts of money on a money pit; you do not have to live in an unaltered museum piece. But you really should think twice about buying an old house and promptly obliterating those distinctive characteristics that make it a cohesive example of an older building. If you want a modern-style open-plan design then, please don't choose one of the remaining old plan houses to impose this on. Now, the house example you have linked to has had a good deal of this destructive choice applied to it, already,so in some ways it may be a lost cause. But if you buy it supposing it to be an example that has not been enormously altered, you may be disappointed when you encounter its reality. As a starting point, and to begin to learn the vocabularly of old houses, start with reading the Preservation Briefs linked below. There is even one on inspecting old houses and inventoring their conditions, which will help you at the home-inspection stage. This house still has a good deal of "character", but has lost a lot of it in its updating. You shouldn't kid your self about that fact. Some of that character may be easily replaced (you could re-erect the partition wall in the fireplace-room, for an example. Or perhaps even compromise in some way to conceal the the newly-exposed structural pieces, and retain the larger room. But things like getting rid of the grossly out-of-proportion eyebrow windows make take a significant amount of money to un-do. (Well, not hundreds of thousands, but maybe up to 5-10 grand to make that change back. And as I alluded to above the size of those windows mave have been driven by modern fire-codes requiring certain amounts of square feet of escape windows in bedrooms. So changing back might require interior changes as well to allow smaller windows to be installed, boosting the tab.) See if your local historical society has any pictures of this house, or closely similar ones to see what has been changed. There is one other thing I want to point out: Old houses reuire an above-average amount money or time, and sometimes both, from their owners. Their owners get a great sense of personal delight and satisfaction from them. But you can't realistically expect to reap those benefits without also expecting to pay those costs. Perhaps if you have no time, and don't want to make up for that lack of time by investing more money in having someone else do things for you, this is not the right time in your life to own and old house. There is no shame in that. Post back if you want a list of books to help you train your eye to see what's old, and what's just styled to look old. The wall color is close to the lightest neutral in the curtains. You can see a spotches of it on the lefthand corner of the wall of first picture in post above.

Ingrid .. I DO have all the blue panels still.. but just bought those red ones lol.
I plan on getting rugs w the dark blue and reds.
The pottery on the clock shelves are all blue and neutrals (made by my son) The fruit bowl and my blue and white dishes are out too.
I really want to bring in blue
So you think a fabric chair in a print would work... instead of the leather

I am confused about the placement of the new recliner. If it is going to go on the wall that the red couch is on there may not be enough room for it to recline unless you get one of those "wall hugger" ones or move the other pieces over, which will then crowd the walkway and DR set. There would still not be a lot of room for the foot rest either way. If is is going right next to the existing one there like your say, there is still not a lot of room for another big recliner without it becoming cramped and not room for an end table either.

Have you considered getting rid of the recliner you have now and getting a loveseat recliner instead of two different recliners? That way there would be nor worry about clashing styles. It would take up less room that two individual recliners. Just a thought. There are plenty of loveseat recliners on CL too.

dilly dally .. I have Totally thought of a double recliner. Dh loves his recliner and won't give it up. We just got it so I am stuck with it for awhile. He's a big guy and sometimes sleeps in it due to reflux issues.
I am a large gal as well. (just saying.. lol)
So yeah .. it will sit right next to the recliner. It will have plenty of room to recline. the gigantic one reclines just fine and the one I get will be smaller most likely as I have never seen such a large recliner as the one we have yikes!
I can sKoosh things over to the left a bit if I have to.. but there is room for another chair

the other end table is Huge so I could always replace that with a smaller one.. making room for a small arm table by my chair as well.

OR Skoosh the big recliner left a bit .. and put a Small round table Between the two recliners

There is 52 inches from the widest part of the big recliner to the wall to the right of it (plenty of room for another recliner.
There is also another 6 inches.. between the end table to the left of the big recliner and the big recliner.
So it can skoosh left
ALSO I can skoosh the armless loveseat back a bit

IMHO, recliners are for comfort, not decor! I would definitely make room for a table between the recliners. As for style the one I like best is the leather one with the nail head trim. The blue one may most similar to the one you have there now, but the color is awful (sorry). I also like the one with the ottoman in front but am concerned that is too much upholstered stuff in one room. I don't think it needs to be the same style as long as the heights are more or less similar between the two chairs since they will be next to one another.

I removed the sofa. there Will be room for a small round table between the recliners in the V area between them
I placed two large country chairs together there to simulate the size of a recliner.
I placed that ugly white table to denote where I plan to place a decor piece. It's hard to see from the pic .. but there is room for a narrow upright chest or something.
The two wood chairs pushed together measure 40 inches together
6 inch space to the wall from them

For the people who like to get the full picture.. here is the flooring that will go in there eventually.
I have started it at other end of house already.
It's Italian terra cotta tile w look of tumbled stone.
As you can see it's red so I don't want Too much red in there.
So maybe the new chair should be brown or tan?

Lorrie, after seeing your further pictures I would go with the recliner with the floral pattern. Since it's for you it's more feminine but also it seems to incorporate the wall color and the color of the other recliner and therefore should tie things together. I'm afraid the other ones will all look like "the odd man out". (Maybe you could keep the blue curtains for summer, since they have a lighter look and the red ones for winter, just an idea.... It's always fun to have a bit of a change.)

Ingrid bless your sweet heart! I was just *hoping* for someone to say that one.. cause that's the one I LOVE.
It's going to be 6 inches shorter though but I think I can balance visually by hanging art behind the shorter one whereas there will be no art behind the bigger one.

I hadn't thought of summer and winter curtains

Anyone else have an opinion.. I welcome Any ideas thanks

She's asking $250 for that floral recliner. It's Lazy Boy brand. I emailed her about how much use it has seen and the condition. She said it is 6 years old but for 2 of those it was not used at all. She said the only wear might be on the footrest but would take care of with a cleaning.
Also said that Lazy boy good brand with a good life ahead of it.
She said she paid such and such $950 and so doesn't know if she can let go for less. (I offered $175 and she is asking $250)
She said the best thing to do is come see it.. (I agree) but I already KNOW there is no way I am paying $250. period. Not for a 6 year old recliner.

Should I offer $200 ? or Keep looking? OH I already emailed her and said.. your city is a ways to drive and if we drive that far .. we are taking the chair with us (provided it's in great shape) However we can't pay $250 and would like to know your bottom line price that you will accept before we drive out there. I know it's Worth that much, we just can't do it right now.
She also said what time would be good for me and I said 10 AM tomorrow morning.

Oooh, I missed the pics of the last ones while I was corralling pics of loveseat recliners. Definitely the floral one! It looks feminine and goes well with the other pieces in the room. It has a light and airy look with the wood legs.

In Chicago you'd be lucky to sell a Lazy-Boy for $75.00.

Her price is way too high, especially if it's dirty.

I do like the floral the best.

I would take it if you love it when you see it and it's clean and in good shape. I've sometimes passed up things for reasons of price and never found anything that I liked nearly as much, and have really regretted it. The $200 won't mean much in a little while but if this is what you want you'll be enjoying it for a long time. Most recliners look rather clunky to me and this one is an exception, so go for it if it's what you want. $200 isn't really that much for a good piece of furniture. You can spend that much eating out in a nice restaurant a few times without having anything to show for it. Please be sure to let us know how things turn out.

Well here is a pic of the one I ended up getting...

It's brand new. The floral one I went to look at and it was in *fair* shape at best. The footrest had fibers sticking up and a string sticking up. She said it was just a bit dirty but was worn down. The arm covers were very soiled and worn.
It was a joke! To think she was asking $200 .. oh my gosh!
So then I called another woman on CL and she described her recliner as excellent condition, 1 year old, always covered. So we get there and it has more wear on the arms and seat than we expected.
We then went to Easy Living. They were advertising Sale & Next Day Delivery.
Then the salesman said it's an everyday sale. Same price all the time lol.
The next day delivery was for $70 or.. we could pick it up ourselves in 4 days in Buena Park.
So then we went to Sams Club and that is where I purchased this one :)
I had my measurements with me to make sure that they are about the same height.
Out of ALL the recliners this one was closest in height. The color is like a tan.. with camel or goldish undertones.
I love it.
It swivels and rocks. The swivel feature is perfect for being in the corner.

I know they are both big and bulky lol ...
I now want to replace the armless loveseat w a small loveseat that incorporates both the burgundy and the camel color of the new chair.
