Video Camera Recommendations

Hello there,

Never posted here, but am a regular on some other home forums. I thought this would be the best place to ask this questions.

I need to buy a video camera tonite. I don't do anything fancy with the videos, but I like having one on hand at all times. Mine just broke and with a new baby and the holidays, I don't want to miss anything.

I want something light, but if it's too small, it's awkward for me. My last one was a Sharp with a view window but no eye lens (if that's what you call it). I would actually like to find something with both this time. I don't need any fancy features and would like to spend under $300 if possible.

I have a digital camera that takes small clips of digitial video. I don't know what all digital video is like, but I don't think I like it. I want the traditional 8mm or something similar if they have newer technology.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Actually reccomending electronics is easier if you are looking for specific features. There are hundreds of choices out there and since your search is pretty broad, the only limiting factor is the $$$. Since you need to camera tonight, I suggest visiting the websites of your local stores and see what is available. Then do a search for reviews of those cameras.

I have a canon,$300. I have been happy with both. Of course the image quality is better be because I paid a great deal more for it.

I did find out that the digital images that my camera takes are low, low quality - not that I was surprised, LOL! Anyway, it was explained to me that a good quality digital camera will take low quality video and a good quality video that has still-shot capabilities will take low quality stills. You can't have both features in high quality.

I am much more into still photography and not really interested in a camcorder with lots of features. I don't even do any editing :( I think I can narrow down my choice to a camera with no still capabilities. I don't need that.

The main reason I wanted to get one tonite is that in-laws were babysitting and I would be able to shop alone. No big deal and I should have posted earlier. I'll do some online price and quality comparisons like you suggested.

do you mean a regular digital camera that uses a memory card to hold the pics and videos? If so then you can simply remove the memory card from camera and insert it into a memory card reader which you plug into your usb port, if there is not one built into your pc already, then simply choose to copy it to the pc from the card, you don't have to have a program to move pics or vids from the memory card to the pc. Most newer computers have a built in memory card reader, if yours does not you can get one for just a few dollars, I have bought them at big lots for $6 but any store with an electronics dept will have them. That is the easiest way to do it and you don't have to add any extra programs to your pc.

A couple free programs would be Handbrake and Videora. For more features Roxio or Nero are popular and are not free.

I just asked my hubster and he uses a program called "Handbrake"..I don't know if its pc or MAC...probably MAC as that is what his laptop is... I just upload them to putfile or webshots and link to friends and family that way... Good Luck!!
