One week in - so far so good. (Pic heavy)

So thrilled to be under way. Have some pics of my old kitchen. My old kitchen looks a whole heck of a lot better than it functioned. My contractor thinks the previous owners who built the house, ran out of money when they got to the kitchen. The cabs were totally custom and built on site but were made about as cheap as you can get. We donated our old kitchen to a family in desperate need and some of the cabinets collapsed as they were taken out. At least they were able to salvage enough for them to put together a kitchen.

No surprises during demo other than some funky electrical DIY by the previous owner. Electrician is coming out this week and, maybe (fingers crossed) I'll start seeing cabs in two weeks. Floors are being redone next week and have to move out for four days. Taking the kids to a waterpark so they are happy campers. :)

My old kitchen. Doors were falling off. Shelves sagging. Won't miss that stained white Corian counter. Especially won't miss that beast of a triple bowl Kohler sink.

Took out that weird cabinet that is on the other side of the room.

My miserable triple bowl sink. I really wanted to take a sledge hammer to it but the family taking my kitchen needed it.

And demo! That weird wall that sticks out into the kitchen is gone now but haven't got a pic yet.

And the weird cabinet is gone.

My laundry room is serving as one sweet temp kitchen. Can't complain. The single bowl utility sink is a dream to wash dishes in compared to my old triple bowl. Ended up renting a fridge after taking one whole day to realize a 2.7 cf dorm fridge wasn't going to cut it.

I'm a happy girl. :)

Good going! sounds like you are on schedule and all is going well! We are about a month behind you...thanks for sharing your progress and tips. Going away for the weekend while floors being redone is a great idea!

glad to hear everything is moving along smoothly. happy to hear you were able to help someone in need, what a stress reliever for them..that's awesome!!

keep us informed and enjoy your 4 days at the waterpark with the kids!!!! have fun and de-stress while you are there :)

Yes Val, Lloyd does have a big one... um, compost that is. Got to keep on topic here, so yes, moderators, we are talking about compost and women do like them too. :O) I knew that response to a previous post would come back to haunt me one day Lloyd. Taking photos of the evidence was an OOPS moment. Me bad! As I said, I'll return the milk pail full of compost they produce to you in a couple of years. :O) Thanks Terrene, and for Karen, here's a couple of encore pics and one of 39 Monarchs which they helped raise this past year. This was my last 'baby', a male, released on October 8th. Paul, Nothing like a Cape Bretonner (I think you are...) lashing out at a mainlander!! LOL! Yep, I show them on my garden tours. They are part of what I do and actually the interest is quite amazing. Especially when you tell them they can do it for free. It's funny because I actually migrate towards compost piles when I visit other gardens... Folks sometimes think I'm up to no good. They probably fear me taking their compost away, and rightfully so. So you'd better keep that watch dog out when I visit, eh? :O) Idaho, My husband and I get along quite well when it comes to the compost. We have an agreement. He doesn't touch my compost and I don't touch his books - he's a worm of another kind. As long as my compost results in an increase in property value, which it has, and his books stay organized, then we are all good.

june 2007 There were some that I planted in other containers first mainly in my case to keep the bunnies and other things to keep from eating them. But most of them went into the ground straight from the jug. I took so long to get the zinnias in the ground that the red star zinnia (i think it is the correct name) started blooming while it was still in the ws jug so I was getting worried. But they made the move great and are blooming thier little heads off. And you can't even tell when I cut a bunch for the house. Thanks everyone. Paula

Britt, That's a lot of wonderful news and some great photos. I'm glad all your hard work, attention to detail and research is paying off. There are not too many years when we have March temperatures running 20 degrees above average for such a long period of time and are able to plant our warm-season crops as early as we can this year. I've been enjoying every bit of the warm temps too and planting like a maniac, trying to do all I can before next week's heavy rains make the garden too muddy to walk into. Just remember that you'll need to be able to cover up and protect your warm-season plants if a late freeze or even a chance of frost hits. It is still a little on the cool side for blackeyed peas. Southern peas dislike any cool weather and we are supposed to be quite a bit cooler next week after the big rain system hits. You can direct-sow southern peas in the ground when the air temps have remained 65 degrees or higher at planting depth for three consecutive days. The assumption is that once the soil temps get that warm, they stay there, but that's not necessarily true. At this time of year, with a freakishly early warm-up, we may see soil temps on something of a roller coaster for a few more weeks. My soil has just hit the right pea-planting temperature this week here in southern OK and I haven't planted peas yet because I expect the soil temp will drop back into the 50s next week. I generally like to wait until soil temps are near 70 before sowing southern pea seed. They'll emerge in soil at 65 degrees, but will lack vigor and will be prone to disease if the soil temps go back down lower than 65. Last year's early warm-up was hard on the cool-season peas, and mine stalled for a while during a warm spell early in the season and then they resumed growth and began producing after it cooled off a little. They haven't been too happy with temps in the 80s this week either and it is sort of like last spring all over again, but I expect next week's rain and cooler temps will please them a great deal. I think it likely that your cannas will be just fine. They bloom very well for me with only morning sun through about 11 a.m. and no direct sun after that. They are mostly in dappled shade even in the morning hours, except for the first hour or two after sunrise. They've bloomed well in their present location for about 10 years. Dawn

Your old kitchen actually "looks" pretty nice, but congrats on getting rid of it considering its limitations. And, how nice of you to donate it to someone who can utilize it. Your house/old kitchen look fairly high end -- it amazes me to see what kind of kitchens are being put in some expensive homes that I have seen (my daughters'; some model homes; etc.). Like yours, they "look" nice, but completely non-functional. Can't wait to see your progress and your "new" kitchen!

Gotta love progress! Our progress is slow since it's just dh doing it all. At least our electric will be up to code. Like you, we found lots of surprises when we opened up the walls. I wish I could donate some of my kitchen stuff. The cabinets had laminate peeling off and drawer fronts falling off so they were trashed. My cooktop and stove were over 10 yrs old so Habitat wont take them. I guess the guy that drives around collecting metal from the trash is going to get them.

My Community Forklift (mine?) even takes just the doors.
They frequently get cabs that are total crap, but the doors are in good condition. That's how I got many of mine.
It's weird what they say they won't take, then even weirder with what they will.

I had one of those old Kohler sinks years ago. I loved, loved it! Garbage went in the middle and my other two sinks were pretty much always clean. I would take it back in a heartbeat.

My old kitchen definitely didn't look bad. The only thing about the old cabs that wasn't bad was the doors. The boxes were total garbage, otherwise I would have done a reface on some of them.

CEFreeman - You're right! I hated that weird cabinet! lol It stuck out into the room and created a weird traffic pattern. Good riddance!

shappy - I can't imagine anyone liking that sink! The biggest problem with the darn thing is that the middle bowl isn't recessed into the sink. Being an over mount, that middle bowl is the same height as the outer rim. Wash anything and you have to rest it on the edge of that inner bowl and water runs out the front and back of the sink. Took a bath every time I used it. If they had just recessed that middle bowl . . . . . . In hindsight, I should have taken a sledgehammer to that darn sink and bought a new one for the people who took the kitchen. Would have been good therapy. lol Meanwhile I am LOVING using the single bowl utility sink in the laundry room. After trying to decide between single vs. double bowl, I know I made the right choice to go with a single. Can't wait to use my new one.

Wow, your kitchen is HUGE and so is your laundry room.

Now that I have seen your laundry room that looks like a nice kitchen, I will be muttering curse words under my breath as I muddle down to my concrete hovel to do my laundry now, so thanks a lot. ;^)

Congrats on the progress! I imagine you're positively giddy!

Woo-hoo, Pooh! Starting feels great, doesn't it? Beware the comfortable temporary kitchen, though. We demo-ed in August and just today got the walk-through with our builder for our beam and window replacement (we'll DIY the rest of the kitchen). Cooking with a toaster oven and single-burner induction is just fine. It helps that our house once was a duplex, so we have a full-sized fridge and sink, which made it easy to spend six months planning and deciding. And planning. And re-deciding. And surfing GW. And planning. And deciding again...

Way to go Pooh!
Today, plumber, moved the drain lines so making progress in getting rid of the soffits!
Tomorrow, the electrician puts in the new electrical panel....
Tick, tick, tick - making progress.
Hope to post this weekend.
So far, we still have the lower cabinets, stove, and microwave in the kitchen. The fridge is in the living room along with boxes and boxes of kitchen items. (Actually crates and drawers)
