Somehow it's just not as much fun unless I show pics and tell ya'll about it. No one else understands!

My partner in crime and I go to the Crumpton auction now and then. When lots are sold, the buyer will often take what they wanted out of the lot and either sell off pieces for a few bucks or often just walk away and leave the rest.

This was left all alone. So it came home with us in September.I promised my DH that I would clean my curb shopped and CL and Goodwill projects out of the garage by spring. Of course I am behind schedule! And keep bringing home stuff.

Wow, that looks awesome. Can you give us the details... What did you sand with & what type of paint. I tried to paint a similar table but it didn't turn out anywhere near the way yours did!!!

Thank you justgotabeme! It is true, we find ourselves in the FRONT of the house quite often! The first evening, we poured cocktails and just sat out front and stared. We are very pleased! CEfreeman-Ohhh, what a long, peaceful country driveway that is! I wouldn't want it to look too "maintained!" Hi Lyfia! I posted quite awhile ago, I was very gung ho on the faux wood grain...as a matter of fact, I wanted to do a faux carriage door look, adding the rustic hardware. Most people were against it...and this was when I was planning on painting my house a dark color. Now that my house is so light, I don't want a big dark expanse that takes up such a huge chunk of the front. If my house were bigger, or the paint darker,I would consider it. I do love that look, just not for this house at this time. birdlover-yes, we are thinking two big black pots on either side of the arch...and maybe on the far side of the garage...with bougainvilla or some flowering vine set on a trellis just a bit off from the house walls so they don't actually grow on the walls! The reason we are thinking black pots is...when you drive to our house, you first see the south side of it...with a row of windows with black awnings over each window. So we feel the big black pots will tie the side and the front together. lukkiriish-thank you, I just love those california spanish homes! Thanks for comparing my home to one of those! Ok, again, I really appreciate every single comment. It has been so much work and money and as much as my hubby and I enjoy it, it is nice to see it be well received here!

I have no idea the blue color.. My boyfriend painted it when he moved in.. I definitely want to change the faucets.. Theres gold throughout the whole house & I wanna change it ALLLLL. Baby steps, haha.. Thanks everyone!!

Awww, you guys are making me blush. I'm so glad you like it as much as we do. Last year after the fire, we had to convince the insurance company to put the money into restoring the interior rather than tearing it down. I know old houses aren't for everyone, but I love our old house even tho it is far from perfect. The colour is called forest black and is a warm brownish black. The painters were reluctant to do black saying that dark colours don't last, but it's been about 5 years now with no peeling. The windows were a huge project. We used a local company that builds wooden windows. The old plate glass ones were so shot that not only did they look bad, but you couldn't actually see out of them. The OPs had been here for 60 years and not only left us wonderful karma, but also pictures from thru the years and we used those to design the new windows to match the originals. dedtired, the upper porch is now off my youngest DDs room. It has glass windows and she can use it for about half the year to double the size of her room. The lower is screened and we just use it for hanging out in the summer. We live in the land of bird-sized mosquitoes so it is nice to have.

Chris, I did to my custom cabs exactly what you want to do. They were solid wood, great shape, but after 15 years I couldn't stand the overall dark feel. I had them refaced and everything painted. new countertops, vent hood, splash, window, everything. The company I hired to paint also deals w/refacing. for an additional 2K, I got all new doors, drawer fronts. (I prob have twice the cabs you do, including a 4X7 island) The new doors are all solid maple w/center panels made from MDF. when painting, MDF is a better choice for the panels than solid wood. To answer your questions about getting new doors that aren't painted, yes, they would then have to use a veneer material to skin your base cabinets so that they would match. something else you should change over is the lower doors to drawers. a good refinishing company can also do this for you. I had them make two large drawers in my island where open shelving used to be. so much better for storing large pans have you had any estimates? If going the painting route, make sure you get all of the steps they take in priming. if getting them refaced, those should come raw, so all they have to do is prime and paint. you can also get soft closing hinges. You're prob looking at well over 6-7K for just painting, and then whatever extra they charge for refacing. as for the gap to the ceiling, there are diff ways to tackle that. since your current cabs have a large wood edge (the part above your doors) , it might be difficult to add on boxes to that. you see how the doors immediately transition into the added boxes? You have that 3-4" of wood above your doors. what you might be able to do is get taller doors to cover that, remove the crown, and then build the boxes above that. or, you could add on a decorative molding or large crown This one might work for you. another poster on here had these, but notice how her doors almost touched her crown molding. They removed that Built boxes and then added doors. I believe she told me this cost her 2K to have that gap closed like this these are mine, before. I'm sure people thought I was crazy for changing it. I didn't care. I lived w/it for 15 years, the finish was wearing and I was tired of dark. notice my drawer/door design. see how the top drawers are slab and the others shaker style? This is why I refaced so they would all match. all of the fluted / rope trim and corbels were removed. micro was moved. vent hood made. drawers in island made. doors added to desk area. We did the window ourselves. new marble/quartz, lighting, flooring, appliances. I did Wrought Iron on my island, bright white on the others. there's a double pantry to the left you can't see. You say you don't want white, which is fine, there are plenty of other colors. Revere Pewter edgecomb gray Navy Kendall Charcoal This just gives you an idea. what is your budget? If you say 10K, that may get you countertops and new tile backsplash.

Ooooh...I love Crumpton's!!! I worked in the area one summer and then we kept a boat in Worton Creek back in the 90's. What a fun place/event!

And the transformation is spectacular (hon). :-)

I need details too! I'm about to repaint a built-in (in white) and am wondering how to get a nice smooth surface with no brush marks. Your paint job looks gorgeous!

Where is Crumpton's auction? I know you are in Maryland and I am too but I have never heard of this place. Also, do you know about Second Chance in Baltimore City? I love, love, love it! It's not necessarily cheap but you can get the most original stuff there!

Any one can do it! Sand. Prime. Paint! ta da!
I used an electric pad sander since the top was all boogered up and it is easier on my arthritis. Plain ol sandaper works just fine too. If the top is smooth enough enough for your liking all you need to do is break the gloss so the primer will stick, some folks don't use primer and that is fine too. I don't always just thought I would since I wasn't going to do a lot of heavy duty sanding on the sides and those curvy legs.
We mixed floetrol additive to the primer and the finish coat to cut down on brush strokes. They are there, just not very noticible,gotta work on my technique. I always like to slap dash! My dermatologist found paint on top of my ear today!! no kidding.
We have always used purdy brushes.
My Dh drilled the old drawer holes with a drill bit that matched a size of dowel we had,and put a piece of dowel in each of the holes. The 1/4 inch dowel was too small, I never thought about drilling the hole bigger to fit the dowel! smoothed over the holes with paintable wood filler. sanded it smooth when dried.
Used kilz primer and I don't like it took 2 coats to block whatever was coming through. 2 coats of BM Revere pewter in pearl finish.
Put on new knobs. Took a day with dry time, breaks etc.
Fun.

Thanks for the kind words. Ya'll can do it just as well or better. I will post clearer steps as I see I left out a couple of important prep steps. bad evening meeting at work, shouldnt have posted last night.

"Crumpton" as they are known is actually Dixon's furniture auction. It has been featured in Country Living mag. But it is in Crumpton MD on the eastern shore, just outside of Chestertown. So it is simply known as Crumpton. You will see trucks from NY and the Carolinas unloading or loading up! many of the antiques that are sold in tony shops come from here. The auctions are Weds only. You can google crumpton auction and you will get the info. They close for winter but I think they have opened for spring. I already have Weds. blocked off on my calendar!

Where is Second Chance in Balto? I work downtown across from the Meyerhoff! oooh lunch trip!

Wouldn't it be funny to bring the newly painted table back to the auction and sell it for a good price? LOL. Especially if the previous owner would to be there, maybe even bid on her old table.

I want those huge paintings they have (at least they had them the last time I was in there.) I've purchased many things from there - I am truly addicted. I save up and then make a trip downtown!

Crumpton's must be the thing my DD was telling me about. She went to Washington College (in Chestertown) and she once told me about this big thing but it was in the middle of the week so I didn't think about it too much after she told me. It is hard to get off in the middle of the week for me. Hmmm, I think I need to do it though!

Pam-md- My DD is a junior at WAC! too funny. If you still get the Wash Coll Magazine, her pic is in this issue. What a surprise to open it and there she is, holding a starfish.
I will have to go to second chance, it sounds great. I go right by the stadium if I take 95 to work.

OMG! I saw this table on the "prettify" thread and came in search of it. It is absolutely gorgeous, Madame Director. I need to get me a table and some additive.

I agree with caminnc, it looks white on my monitor. Is it more grey in person? Send it to me so I can check it out.
