anyone else follow The Lettered Cottage blog? She repaint cabs?

First off, love some of the stuff they do over there. And have copied many ideas. Over the weekend, dh "beefed" up our moldings in the kitchen per instructions given on their blog.

I was just looking at pics of her spring mantel (adorable) and am I seeing things..or did she paint her kitchen cabinets white?? At least the top ones?

I've seen that view 100 times, and you could always see the black cabs in the background.

Now, they look to be white.

Anxious to see what she's done there!

I think you're right! I am a faithful follower of Layla's blog and totally missed the white overhead cabinets in the kitchen behind the mantel! Doesn't make a lot of sense, though, because she just completed the bench for the wall across from the cabinets a couple of months back (in black to match). Curious! I'll be interested to see what's up with that.

I know! I'm kind of shocked. I can see where white would be more in the style of what she's got going on through the house. Did you see how she changed her kitchen table? Maybe that started a chain of events :)
Glad I'm not seeing things, lol.

Not to beat a dead horse...is that the right expression? Ick, it sounds terrible. Not to drag this on, but Teresa, I looked at your post and responded to it. I kind of get why you felt the way you did - because your kitchen is gorgeous and if I were you, I'd probably wonder why nobody responded. But to you - and to others who commented that they did not get any responses to their finished kitchen post - I'd say don't get dismayed and don't take it personally. It could be the time of day or time of year. It could be the number of competing "finished kitchens" that were posted around the same time. It could be that people look but don't comment - because there was nothing they had any questions on. I also know that people who tended to post BEFORE their kitchen is done, with questions and requests for help - tend to get more responses because others feel like they contributed to the poster's success. And it makes others excited to see the finished result. There's more of a "relationship" there for lack of a better word. Anyway, I'm not really sure how to go on about this. Just that it bugs me and I'm not sure why. I wish I could make you and others feel better about it.

It's kind of funny to read these comments. Though, I'm not sure how funny it is to say that because someone likes a blah house they don't know how to decorate. Just because the color palate is neutral doesn't mean their decor and furnishings are blah. Honestly, I would much prefer a blah color that I could live with for a while over a sage green or purple that makes me feel bad. The whole point of choosing a color scheme for selling is to create an environment that is friendly for almost everyone. Some might think my color choices are blah, but not one potential buyer or their agents have had anything but good things to say about the colors. I don't think my decor is blah either and fortunately for me I can change out my accessories without having to repaint anything...which is what I'm looking for when I go house shopping in the future. While a purple (no offense to the one with the purple room) dining room would not keep me from buying a house, I would make sure to rule out any other houses first that I didn't have to paint immediately. In the current market we're in, there are alot of houses to compete with and expressing your artistic side isn't necessarily going to sell your house quickly. It sort of stinks, but that's the way it is. I still stand my SW #16 color card...love that blah-ness. sylviatexas, love your advice!!

Hey, Jay, do you remember the old Robert Mitchum movie about the NC moonshiners? It was remade not many years ago, and I think Mitchum's son was in it the second go-round. Anyway, Thunder Road is part of the Moonshiner mentality, the beginning of the stock car generation, the present NASCAR elite from NC. I think it has a double meaning for the racing and for the moonshine running activities. I think you are on the right track with Bootleg. What are some other words they used for Moonshine? Shinney? White Lightning? So far though, I think Bootleg is the least pretentious. It also implies a do-it-yourself operation, so good in more ways than one. And, I was reading a book about the building of pocket neighborhoods, where they all named their homes, and realized that I don't HAVE to add "cottage" or whatever other word to the name I choose. And in this book, folks were naming their homes things like ROSECROFT, CHILI PEPPER (the house was painted red outside), etc. They said anything goes as long as it has meaning to YOU. So I thought, what is the most significant symbol of my life with my DH soon to be celebrating our FIFTH anniversary. And the album by Bette Midler called BETTE OF ROSES was important in my life since the day my son died. It was also the album that followed the trail of our reuniting after 50 years apart, and the song describes "When the White Bird flies, from your heart to mine,...." and for this lovely song, we had a porcelain white dove and rose atop our wedding cake instead of the traditional bride and groom. And then I was browsing through the Little and Lewis (Bainbridge Island WA artists and gardeners) website and saw they had a lovely white dove in flight for sale, and it would go so nicely in our landscape, and I have about decided.... Just call it one of these two: WHITE DOVE OR WHITE BIRD No "Cottage" after it at all, just WHITE DOVE.......or ......WHITE BIRD... Which do you think is better? I have several plaques and figurines with white doves, this has always appealed to me for various reasons. But for my life which is avian loving, it is more appropriate than SUN. The house is white stucco. I could very easily cut out from wood or cement board a dove in flight. Not a seagull, don't-cha-know, not a cockatoo, but not ruling out that I could have a great white heron or snowy egret somewhere in the garden too. Or a white owl? Well, so much for that today. No gardening for this gal with the temp supposed to be 99 today, even if it did rain about half an inch yesterday. I saw the baby rabbit out in the garden eating seed heads from the withered tall grass, not cutting it again until there is enough rain. This poor baby must have lost his mama, he looks so skinny. My DH says he has a friend with a HOUSE BUNNY, who is quite house trained and impeccably clean, has a litter box inside. I wish my doxie girl Dixie would be peaceful so this little rabbit could be her friend and all live happily ever after.

Technicolor - After reading your original post again, I never thought about porch and floor paint but that would make sense. What brand (Ace?) were you talking about? Oh, and wouldn't you still need to sand - at least scuff sand and use a (bonding) primer like Zinsser first? *NOTE - Just a general heads up, I don't recommend anyone using SW Porch and Floor paint. Total crap. I supposedly got a 'bad batch' (it never got past tacky and I went above and beyond to do that job right.) and had to redo my stair project which was MISERABLE. They gave me a new gallon of paint and threw in some tape and sandpaper but that still didn't fix my stairs. I was told they were discontinuing the product but I believe it's still available. Your kitchen sounds really pretty. And I like red - have a bathroom painted BM Moroccan Red. You think bb around my DR side too? "My senses tell me it is the dining room that is making this so difficult for you. I know you don't want to change it, but the styles are clashing regardless of color." I almost hate to ask, but can you be more specific? I look at it everyday and I'm sure can't 'see' it like someone else. I'm assuming it's too formal/stuffy for the kitchen side? I've been trying to get away from that a bit, tho the rug didn't bother me enough to make it a replacing priority right now. I figured I'd have a better chance of stumbling across art I liked first. Even if I had more money, I don't know what I'd pick or replace first. Ha, it's a little tough to change anything if you don't have a clear game plan. It's interesting, in the past when I had a project, I'd throw ideas out and go back and forth, back and forth with what I wanted to do and I always have to WAIT, sometimes months, until I figure out what's going to work for me. I wish I knew how to speed the process up. I'll post a photo with the new hardware on when it comes.

I believe several months ago they repainted the cabinets - white uppers and gray or blue (?) lower cabinets. Not sure if she repainted the black hutch and bench.Can't remember if this was done before or after the photo shoot???

I believe the table you mention is in her dining room.

Ohhh..wow!! I'm still in shock. How did I miss this?? LOL. And darn it, just that itty bitty pic is all we get?? :)
It's the same view I see EVERYWHERE. Just that little piece of her kitchen. I want more!! :)

I thought the black was wonderful. But, I love this even more.

WOW...I check that blog at least 3 times a week, and I never saw that they changed the black cabinets to white. Actually, they are both gorgeous.

I liked her cabinets better black but I know she has to change things around all the time to keep up the interest.
I really like painting a variety of ceramics white. Now that has me interested!

Layla, I'm going to assume with the 101 other projects you have going on, you've only done half of one run of cabs. Am I right? Huh..am I? lol.
And it's takin' me 4 years to finally get the guts to paint my cabinets. And here you've had two wonderful transformations in just a matter of a couple short years.

While I think the black cabinets are striking, I think you'd get tired of them quickly. Comparing the black to the white in Layla's kitchen, the new color just welcomes you much more than black - just my opinion.

Also, your countertops are very dark, and Layla's and others with black cabinets have very light countertops. I don't think you'll be happy with a cave like kitchen. :-)

I'd go with a slightly off white and do a very light brown or gray glaze so the creaminess of of the cabinets isn't competing with your white appliances.

OMG, Layla's blog is the only one that I try to actively follow, and I can't believe that I missed the cabinet repainting! I've used her painting technique on all the furniture I've repainted in our house and had such success with the results. I loved the black cabinets, and my DIL changed hers out using Layla's instructions with tremendous results....but these white ones with the painted bases look so warm and inviting. Can't wait to see the finished results!!

carol, if you're referring to MY kitchen..you're spot on. I think I've ditched the idea of black cabs. You mentioned my dark counter top. One of the reasons I've backed away! As well as the white appliances. I've finally decided I need to work WITH the elemenents in my kitchen. Not against :)
As much as I love an all white kitchen, or black cabs..I have too many things that will make it always seem "off". I think I've opted for a slightly creamier white on the top cabs. And a taupe that I've pulled out of the tile floor on the bottom. That way, the floor doesn't look dirty (with the white against it), and there's not a sea of all white. (cabs, subway tile, appliances, light floor) And all these colors can also be found in the counter top. I'm hoping I can pull it off. :)
