Yes, Mulan was a beautiful bird. She had kind of a "hawk" look to her, especially around the eyes. And I just love the feathers on the feet!

Gayle--Brooding chicks takes a couple months. You have to keep them in a box under a lamp for about 6 weeks, gradually lowering the temperature each week. I won't put my chicks out in the coop with the others for at least 7 or 8 weeks, depending on the temperature outside. And I may have to keep them separate from the two grown ones for a week or two, until they're old enough to fight back if they get picked on. So by the time they go outside, they're big enough that snakes aren't a problem (at least not the little garter snakes we have; YMMV).

If you're serious about wanting to get chicks, first make sure that you're allowed to where you live. You should be able to find out everything you need to know either on the web or in books. You can get books about raising chickens at most feed stores. It's not complicated, but you do need to provide the same things you would for any pet or livestock: food, water, shelter, and protection from predators.

We are very Rural and it is no problem to have chickens. Some of my neighbors have them.

I've decided to name my chicks Aurora and Nala, like mickey15 suggested. (Thanks, nodakgal, for the link to all the Disney characters; that was very helpful.)

Did you find them locally or have to order them? Now I want chickens, too! Too many predators around here, though, and 3 of 'em would be our cats.

I got them at my local feed store. You can order specific breeds in advance or just take what they have. You can also order chicks thru catalogs or online, from places such as Stromberg's. Some may have a minimum quantity.

It was real hard not to bring home a few baby quails too. Talk about cute! They were about the size of my thumb! And they get that little deely-bopper on their head. :)

They are so cute. Can you hold them? or do they not like to be held? And are they as soft as they look? Can you tell I've never been around baby chicks? LOL!

mickey--Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes! :)

They run away when I try to pick them up, but at this point I'm faster than they are, so I can catch them. Once they're grown, they're hard to catch. My two adult hens will "squat" when they see me coming, so I can just pick them up, but they don't really like being held. But even as adults, their feathers are very soft.

They are so cute- I was a chaperone on a school trip to a farm and I got to pick up one of those adorable babies.

Ya know, kframe, when I typed the line in the original post asking for name suggestions, I added in parentheses "no Parmesan, Kentucky Fried, or cacciatore please!" but then I deleted it. I figured I'd just wait and see who was the first to pipe up with funny names. :)

I admit tho, McNugget would be a funny name--for any pet! I used to work with a woman who had a cat named Pork Chop! :-P

The chicks are growing so fast! Today one has a couple little feathers on her tail that weren't there yesterday.

I had to get them a "real" food container today. They kept kicking the food out of the other one(s). Feisty little buggers!
