My Cat Has a Collapsed Lung
Comments (11)Dear friedajune, I just had to put my 1 year old kitten to sleep because of a collapsed lung and another lung that was not functioning at full capacity!! : ( ; ( As a result, my kitten couldn't breath regularly anymore. She was struggling for air and oxygen just to stay alive!!! : ¤ I noticed something was wrong when she started breathing heavier than usual and she became less playful until she became lethargic. : ( ; ( This was very unusual for her since she loved to play and run around. I also noticed she was losing weight fast. I could feel her backbone when I pet her. Her tongue which was usually sticking out of her mouth and pink was now pale. : (She also stopped eating and drinking. Last night when I saw her sitting flat on the floor with her head down I knew there was something terribly wrong!!! : ¤ : ( ; ( I felt it!! Had a bad feeling, as they say. I had never seen her sit in that position before with her head down like that. I alerted my husband and told him I wanted to take her to the vet's office the next day. He was concerned but didn't want to take her to the vet because we don't have the money. After arguing for my babygirl, he finally relented and said you can take her. I called the vet's office the next morning when I got up and they were open. They said one of the female vets could see me and Faith in 3 hours. I couldn't make it in time, so my husband took her after all. I told him to call me if it's something serious. Well, I got a call from him so I feared the worst, and rightly so. The vet said one of her lungs collapsed and the other was only partially working so my little Angel was gasping for every bit of air she could get!!! : ¤ : ( ; ( She was literally suffocating!!!! : ¤ : ( ; ( ; ( The vet suggested we put her to sleep.:( I was devasted!!!!! : ¤ : ( : < ; ( ; < I just lost my Dad to colon cancer this January and my husband just lost his brother-in-law to a terrible car accident 4 days after my Dad died!!! : ¤ : ( ; ( We also lost two kittens last year from the same litter as Faith. One minutes after he or she was born. The other, Hope, in early October. : ( ; ( So we've had one heartbreaking loss after another in less than a year's time. And now this, out of the blue!!! ; ( ; ( Faith was about to turn a year old in a week and a half!!! : ( Her birthday was Saturday May 28th, 2016.* She didn't make it. ;( Now, her brother Pax, which means peace in Latin, is the only surviving sibling of that precious little litter that was born on my bed one hot morning last May.* I really hope nothing happens to him now!!! We also adopted the kittens momma which I affectionately named Calliope for the pretty kaliodascope of colors her fur has.* : ) : > She is a beautiful, brown, long-haired, fiercely loyal and playful Calico.* : > : ) ♡♡♡☆☆ Her daughter Faith that we had to put to sleep had only one healthy working eye!! : ¤ Her right eye never opened. The vet said it was a mild deformity. Faith had some asthma growing up so she wasn't always in the best of health. : ( ; ( The vet said what your vet said about your cat. That the collapsed lung probably didn't come on suddenly but was probably the result and culmination of a chronic condition. : ( ; ( Since it has been 10 years since you posted about your cat, I'm sure she has passed on by now. I am soooooooooooo sorry for your loss. ; ( : ( If you don't mind me asking, did her surviving lung get worse and cause her to lose her life? If so, I'm soooooooooo sorry. : ( ; ( Strange that your cat developed lung problems later in life. I'm sure she had a wonderful and happy life with you and your family before she passed.* : > : )My deepest condolences.* Thanks for sharing your experience and concerns. Makes others who are going through a similar situation with their pet feel less alone.* Thanks again.* Sincerely, Susanne Tapley* : )...See MoreDaughter's cat has some major issues.
Comments (8)Oh, I feel for you. I am in a very similar situation. One of my cats has hyper-T and CRF, my other does not and feeding them separately is not a very viable option. At first we were constantly covering and uncovering bowls of food on demand- great if you're home all day and want to be a slave to a cat. Forget ever leaving for the day... I have switched my kitty over to non-RX food, both canned and dry, and she is doing very well- her last numbers were better than when she was on the RX diet. The dry food is a commercially available brand that is made for older cats, so it's fine for my old boy to eat too, and it's analysis is about equal to science diet RX- at least where it matters for CRF cats. When we feed wet food to her, we give her a blob, she eats off it, and it the other cat eats it we don't worry about it a whole lot. The wet food I do have to order online, but even with ridiculous shipping it still costs about half what canned K/D did- and she actually LIKES this food. I don't know if the ingredients are really much better quality, but right now I'm mostly concerned with just getting her to consume calories in a food that works for her. Since she was diagnosed a little over a year ago she has put on 4 pounds. We've had to increase her sub-q fluids, so that's a sign that things aren't really even staying stable, but she's doing very well with management and is living a happy life. She gets thyroid meds 2x/day too, but in pill form. If Pepsi is younger, I wouldn't switch him over to a food like what I feed my cats that is for seniors, he would still have younger cat nutritional needs. I don't know what you should do if that is the situation. There are also homemade diets- many on the internet. Getting the cat to eat them is really hit or miss in my experience, but does you give you control over ingredients. The one I made for my cat was potato and chicken with a few other ingredients. It is a pain to make and I freeze excess in jars in the freezer. Once we found the other non-RX canned food, she liked it better, it was easier on me, and her numbers were actually better than when she was on homemade food. If you search the internet, you will find a lot. Here is a link where I have gotten a lot of info over the past year- there should be info about the commercial foods and CRF, look for the link to the chart for US pet foods- very interesting place to start. You can email me directly too if you want more info about what we do. Good luck. Comments (48)My vet told me that hyperthyroidism can mask kidney disease. The increased blood flow when thyroid levels are high helps the kidneys. When levels come down with medication the kidney disease shows more. Loss of appetite is also a side effect of methimazole. My 21-year-old has days where he won't eat anything but Fancy Feast. In addition to the methimazole, I'm giving him Thyroid Support Gold and Kidney Support Gold from Pet Wellbeing. Both with vet approval and he is doing pretty well given his age. It took a few month to get things on even keel....See MoreMy cat Max needs your help.....
Comments (17)The same thing happened with our cat, now almost 13 years old. After blood tests and x-rays, the vet found no cause for his being ill. They pumped him up with a steroid injection and fluid injections on 2 different visits (you could feel a slight hump in his back, kind of like a camel). He wouldn't eat so I tempted him with his favorite thing in the whole world - and yes, I got the vet's OK - he loves Sam's Club 90% lean ground chuck, uncooked (raw). Yes, you read that right, it must be from Sam's Club because he can tell the difference. That was 6 weeks ago and now he is right as rain. I hope your Max will recover too, keep the faith.
