Mastr Bathroom Paint - Concur or Suggestions Please

Greetings All,

I don't believe I have previously asked for your expertise selecting paint colors. Generally colors work for me but for our Master Bath, while I have pondered many and selected ones which hopefully will work, I am still in a quandary so am requesting your evaluation/confirmation/recommendations.

Project creep is the norm here. Updating the Master Bath began with a need to replace our roof and in conjunction we are having a new sky light installed. This necessitated removal of the cloud them wallpapered ceiling. So, being this far committed, we have decided to give the room a "facelift". The footprint, tile (same pattern wall/floor) and bathtub remain unchanged. A new glass shower enclosure, new vanity cabinet/granite top/basins/faucet and new WC. The vanity and adjacent Linen Cabinet will be maple, stained Ebony tone will be selected with the cabinet maker. Yes, I would like to gut and start anew but the current housing market just doesn't warrant such.

Here is where I seek advice. The tile (floor and wall) is not changing nor will the carpeting in the adjacent bedroom. We have selected granite for the vanity. The only place where it will be in contact with the tile is as a pony wall cap by the shower. It all needs to coordinate though and my color leanings are toward C2 paint. I've studied SW and BM too but keep coming back to these:

Ceiling: C2 Fresco (a hint of blue).

Wall over vanity and two adjacent walls: C2 Fusion (a dark tan we've also used this color on a wall in our kitchen.

Wall opposite vanity: C2 Magnet (a dark blue and this color will reflect in the mirror but otherwise not be visible from the bedroom).

The bathroom is bright with a southwest exposure having a 2ft. x 4ft. window plus a skylight. As master bathrooms go it is not large, measuring approximately 8ft. x 12ft. with a vaulted ceiling. How do you think these colors go with the tile and granite? MBR is now tan but will soon be repainted so it is not an issue.

You have a nice space there to work with, I think it will be really pretty when it's done.

I like the granite and paint choices, the blues OR the beige would look nice, but using 3 paint colors altogether may be too much for the space and I think it will look too busy. Also, once you put that light blue on the walls, it will look bright and like a baby blue. The trick to picking a light blue is to go with a gray that has a blue tint to it. When it goes up on the wall, it will look completely blue, but the gray will tone it and keep it from coming off as a stark or brighter blue.

That looks like a nice bath! I like that darker blue swatch you posted. I think darker colors make a master bath look rich. Have you tried to put a sample up on the wall?

The bathroom we currently have is white and silver. White walls, white vanity, white shower head, white tiles, white walls, and silver fixtures. I hate it. I'm sure a clean look was what they were going for, but it looks institutional. UGH! So I decided, when we build our bathroom to do the complete opposite. We have a tall dark cherry dresser to hold stuff. The sink is a vessel. The vessel bracket which holds it onto the wall is antique copper. The walls will be buttery yellow (See Behr's melted butter). The fixtures are somewhere between bronze and antique copper. The tile pulling the reds and golds together is called Canyon Slate. It looks a lot like this Datile. As you can see, this is a warm muted earthy bathroom. It's not done yet, so I don't have pictures. We do have a white toilet and tub. They're not totally bright, so it's ok. Anything else would look dated, we think, so white it is.

I think you've made great choices so far! For the counters, I think a lighter color would keep the room from getting too heavy, with the black vanity and dark gray floor. White granite would be awesome, though hard to find/expensive. Caesarstone nougat and Silestone Mont Blanc are colors to look at if you want a solid surface; just be sure to take the marble-like tile with you when you pick a counter, as the marble can run to the blue end of the spectrum, or the more cream-colored end. It can make a big difference in the overall color scheme. I really like recessed medicine cabinets, so think about whether your contractor could do that. Obviously lots cheaper to install would be a wall mounted cabinet, and those are easy to find in a style that compliments your vanity. If you want to stick with the craftsman style of your vanity, Home Depot has white medicine cabinets that would coordinate really well. And as said above, sconces that go on either side would be possible if you shrink the mirror. If your budget is tight, consider just putting some trim around the existing mirror to create a frame. Even though big mirrors are "out", they can be pretty nice to expand the illusion of space in a narrow room. And consider how the mirror is attached to your wall. If it's heavily glued, removing it will wreck the wall. Are you replacing the tile that's on the rest of the bathroom walls? As for paint, a very very pale aqua can look great with the cararra marble finishes. I'd be careful not to go too blue because it can look cold and/or garish. I actually would consider doing a dark gray wall, perhaps only on the top half if you're keeping tile on the lower half. If you use glossy paint, it can look very rich.

Busybee ... Thank you, I'll check that out. I can't believe I forgot my fan deck today. I carry that thing with me everywhere these days. Caminnc, I did cut the wall color 50% for the ceiling, but now that I'll be changing the wall color we'll have to see how the ceiling looks.

I would find a good wallpaper installer to do a continuation lay of a wallpaper mural. Some have a bit of your bedroom blue with the greens. The effect with the lighter sky at the top will add more vertical height and look cool. Maybe not those particular mural wallpapers ( just quickly grabbed some) but there are some nifty wallpaper murals out there. Google bathroom wallpaper murals or scenery wall murals, A bunch of trees with water and sky would work so well with the floor color, countertop and wood of vanity... greens, blues, a bit of brown, earth with everything getting lighter as it goes up. Small off areas can be painted any color in the mural.

lukkiirish - Your tips are very helpful, especially using the gray tone to achieve the correct blue. Eyes can see things differently. I'll only be using this color on the ceiling (plus back of the plant shelf) as I need some way to keep the plant ledge from disappearing.

And, BTW, Happy St. Patrick's Day. Our flag will go out for the weekend.

nutmegxo - I've only tried the brown as a sample but just to see how it differs from the current color, it's slightly darker. I am hoping to achieve a spa look.

I'm really curious as to what the space looks like over all, is there anyway you can snap a pic of the whole room? If you take a picture with enough resolution to it, I may be able to play with the colors a bit so get a visual.

lukkiirish - Your offer is very nice and certainly a visual would help. I'm attaching the only other two photos I have of the room and presently it is in a state of de-construction so taking a fresh one isn't an option.

I've been considering your advise on the ceiling and may just go with white there as I sort of have my heart set on the brown and blue for the other walls. Besides, they're more easily repainted should I be disappointed!

This vanity is going to be replaced. Planning for a beveled glass mirror beginning above the outlets and "floating" on the wall. A medicine cabinet will remain where one is seen (but perhaps with a door matching the cabinets, no mirror) but the Linen Closet beyond will contain a cabinet, matching the vanity, going almost to the plant shelf. Going to be late summer getting these as our cabinet maker is booked until then (lucky him).

Our flag is hung, almost summer weather here in northern IL. Unusually warm and I'm using the patio this evening - unheard of for March! Thanks for your encouragement.

Keep an open mind, you may be surprised and see something you hadn't considered. Visuals tend to do that!
