Foster mom 'pep talk' needed plz

Hello all,

I am here today looking for a little suppport, and help to not become a foster failure!!!!! I am currently fostering my FIRST pair of kittens from a private rescue group- it is the same rescue where I adopted my 3 cats. I have become soo attached to these 2 kittens I cry everytime I think about returning them for adoption on Saturday. They have been with me 3 weeks and are now 12 wks old. Before my home, the Rescue had them with a different foster home because they needed to be bottle fed. They were to stay with me me until they were big enough to be neutered, vaccinated, and socialized with my 3 cats, my dog, and children. I guess I have done my job and they are now ready for adoption. They will now go to the Rescue owners home until she finds suitable homes, and I am going to get a new pair of babies to raise. This Rescue group does such amazing work saving these babies from the shelter that I wanted to be a part of it. I guess I never anticipated how hard it was going to be to say goodbye. This is soo hard.

Any words of encouragement with people experienced in this will help!!!

If it's any consolation, I have the same problem with my own puppies! And it's gotta be tougher when you have kids! I have fostered and treated many different pets over the years and it doesn't make any difference to me whether it is puppies, kittens, foals, or even baby birds, it is always tough to let them go! The only thing I can offer, other than to let you know that I know exactly how you feel, is to pass on my selftalk.

I start repeating to myself, about a week before they go, all the reasons I decided to breed and why I foster in the first place. I love animals, I love being a mom, I love to be a part of this incredible chance to pass on this love to others who feel as I do and most of all to trust that another person or family needs this love in their lives as much as I have it to offer in the form of these beautiful little creatures. Most importantly, to trust myself that I have done my best and it is in their best interest to have a family of their own to love. Cry a while, hug the kids, and let them be a part of the offering, then get prepared to do it all over again knowing it will be repeated with the same care and emotion necessary to grow a life from the start. :)

A poem from a breeder, when I question why I do this, as tough as it is. It makes me cry everytime but I'm gonna cry anyway. Tears are healing.:) It means they are loved!

I Love My Little puppy.....

I love my little puppy, she makes my house a home.
She always is my best friend, I never feel alone.
She makes me smile, she makes me laugh,
She fills my heart with love ...
Did some breeder breed her, or did she fall down from above?

I've never been a breeder, seen life through their eyes,
I hold my little puppy and just sit and criticize.
I've never known their anguish, I've never felt their pain,
The caring of their charges, through snow or wind and rain.

I've never sat the whole night through, waiting for babies to be born,
The stress and trepidation when they're still not there by dawn.
I've never felt the heartache, of a little life in my hands,

Formula, bottles, heating pads, you've got to get this right,

to save this little baby, but God willing ... you just MIGHT.

Day one he's in there fighting, you say a silent prayer,
Day two & three, he's doing well, with lots of love and care.
Day four & five ... he's still alive, your hopes soar to the heavens,
Day six he slips away again, dies in your hands day seven.

You take this little angel, and bury him alone,
With aching heart and burning tears, and an exhausted groan,
You ask yourself "Why do this? ... why suffer all this pain?"
But see the joy your puppies bring... it really self explains.

So, when you think of breeders and label them with "greed",
Think about what they endure to fill another's need.
When you buy a puppy and with your precious dollars part,
We only pay with money ... they pay with their hearts.

Homebody..Why do thou think I don't foster anymore? Kudos to you for doing it , but I couldn't cope. Ten years ago I rescued a pregnant feral cat who had three babies under a neighbors porch. Fortunately mom was friendly..probably dumped when she got pregnant. But she was in miserable shape. Greasy fur ,so skinny I didn't even realize she was pregnant at first. I started feeding her outside and then she appeared skinny so I followed her and found the kittens at 2 weeks old. Brought them all to my house and fostered them for a group. You guessed it. Mom was so dear I had to keep her and kept a baby too and adopted out the two boys. Mom and Daughter are still with me ... fat and happy and always indoors.

Then six years ago I rescued two kittens form a feral mom and raised them together for three months. Mom was really wild and I didn't want the kittens to go feral. Long story..I kept one kitten, would have kept the other but husband wouldn't let me. I still wonder about Buster and hope beyond hope he got as good as life as his brother, Henry who is a sweetie.

GIO I'm going to look into finding the red dye as well. Are you planning on water, clove oil, and the red dye? I'd much rather use that than the Sevin... Yes, I'll be using the red dye, water, clove oil and other containers with the dye and tayuya root powder, which I have. No Sevin. The only place I could find the dental disclosing tablets was online. Your dentist might have some tucked away in a cabinet somewhere -- I'm not sure how common their use is these days, though I think they're used to help children brush thoroughly! But check to be sure the dye is #28 red, since #40 red is used sometimes. Also, about the clove oil. One woman tried it when we were experimenting but apparently put it full-strength and *some* liquid Sevin in a plastic cup. She reported that the next morning the bottom of the cup had melted away! I read later that undiluted clove oil WILL melt plastic. I used styrofoam cups and probably a greater dilution of the clove oil with water and didn't have any problems at all. Good point about the yellow containers. I got excited about making it more effective without considering the consequences to the pollinators. However, is the red dye toxic to the pollinators? The red dye will be consumed only by the insects attracted to the lure it's mixed with, and that's ONLY cuke beetles, not the pollinators or other insects. The reason is that the chemical compound, cucurbitacin , is in the lure that attracts cucumber beetles. It exists in varying degrees in all cucurbits, but the beetles flock to some cucurbit plants in droves and less to others, quite likely because of the strength of the odor. OTOH, pollinators are attracted to the cucurbit flowers, mostly through the kind of light emitted by various colors and probably the nectar in them, and cucurbitacin is of no interest to them. (Thus my reluctance to use anything yellow as a container in hopes of attracting the cuke beetles -- that might indeed attract the pollinators, too.) I hope your garden won't be as infested with cuke beetles this summer as last year! The kind of cucurbits you planted may have been the lure for so many (I didn't check your list against the list in the link), so if you can avoid growing them again, maybe the beetles will be smaller in numbers and it won't be a losing battle to keep the numbers low enough that you can harvest most of what you plant. That's about all we can ask of nature! I have Crenshaw melons, tomatoes, and beans out in the garden right now and haven't seem any insects so far except for flea beetles. So when these pests show up (and I know they will) that's when I'll set out the baited traps. I'll report back occasionally on how well it's working. It would be great if you (and anybody else who tries it) could do that, too. Report success OR failure. People have a tendency to not think about insect problems until they show up in THEIR garden, so it's possible that some who aren't interested in killing every insect on their plants will look for a solution a bit later in the season. I've never had to deal with Japanese beetles, but a zapper over a koi or other pond sounds like a great way to get rid of them! Sounds like you have some fun projects to think about!

Well I guess by now you can see that you are not alone in thinking on giving it up. I too have the same problems, stink bugs, squash vine borers, whiteflies, squirrels, hot dry or hot humid stinkin weather. At times I can't bring myself to go outside in this stuff and do the gardening chores that are required. Every year I say I'm giving it up and buying from the farmer's market. But every year come February I start seeding. Why? It's not so much as the reaping as the love of gardening and the challenges that come with it. Every year it's a new challenge but every year there are a few successes. I keep asking myself what did I do right on the few successes that I didn't on the failures. After thinking about this in detail I came up with this answer....NOTHING! In our climate we are at the mercy of nature. Like the weather nothing is predictable in the garden...except one thing....I will do it again next year because it's the love of gardening and the hope that this will be the year that it will be a success. If you garden for any other reason (production, making money, bragging rights, etc.) you may want to consider giving it up. Look around Atlanta area, do you see any tomato, pepper, or any other major commercial vegetable farms? Most of the major production is done further south where they start earlier before the bugs begin and also plant later after the bugs are gone not to mention the use of agricultural pesticides and irrigation. Don't be discourage...just keep in mind that nothing is perfect when it comes to gardening and there is no secret, just the right conditions coming together at the right time...Good luck... gardening is as much for the soul as it is for taste!

The links above are excellent, but I'd also add: 1) Don't try to get away with cheap paint. Good quality paint is easier to apply and the colors are often more pleasing and subtle. Ditto, cheap brushes/roller pads, etc. 2) Remove stuff from the to-be-painted room, or at least remove everything you can while painting. 3) Buy and use good canvas drop clothes, properly cared-for they'll last you a lifetime. (And they have hundreds of other uses, too.) 4) Get good step ladders, and some lights on stands as being close to your surfaces, and being in a very well lit space make a big difference in knowing that your paint is being well-applied. 5) Think some about what colors attract you, for each type or room, and then think about why. Make a color picture file (either using printed pictures, or digitally). If you collect enough pics, then you'll see where the trend of your choices is leading you. 6) Think about those trends and the furniture, or carpeting, you already have or are likely to have right away. Think about the light coming into your house, and your geographic location (i.e. bright Miami Beach sun vs. cool, foggy, Seattle) 7) Don't expect any print or on-line rendering of any particular color to look exactly like it really is, even if the color number or name is known. Ditto, at least to some degree, even for many paint sample cards. Paints also change somewhat as they age on the wall, and the sample cards. 8) Once you've got some tentative choices, buy small cans of the fave options (some brands have sample sizes, a big plus, as the cost is much less than a quart) and then paint at least two coats on some large foam-core "poster" boards (at least 2 X 2.5 feet) - purchase boards at craft outlets or stationery stores. Hang the boards up on walls around the room and see how you like the colors. (Use folded over loops of blue painter's tape stuck on the back to hang the boards.) If you strike out on the first round(s?) of paint colors, you can just keep repainting the boards. 9) Don't use the wall as your sample site since it can create difficulties painting over a patch of rejected color, and you can't move the painted part of the wall around to look at it on different walls, and in different lights. 10) Keep in mind, it is only paint, so it's definitely not the end of the world if you find yourself in a pickle, even after you've got it on the wall. The biggest part of painting is the prep work, which does not need to be re-done if the color you choose turns out to be unappealing on the wall. At worst, you'll need to lay down an extra coat of primer to cover a really deep shade with a lighter one, but usually not even that needs to be done when repainting right away before your walls have been dinged by wear and tear. 11) Most of the trouble of painting is doing the trim work, so unless you're super confident in your color choice, stick with classic off-white for the trim. Bright white is rarely a good choice for trim as it sets up a very harsh contrast with subtler tones of almost every other color. Nor do I think bright white is good for ceilings, either, for the same reason. 12) The only thing tricky about off-whites is whether to choose one that is on the warm or cool side. Hold off on the trim/ceiling shade decisions until you've identified the main colors in your house. Then you'll have more of an idea of where you're headed. If you must pick trim before you've worked out a whole color scheme (i.e., if you must complete one room ASAP), then try to stick with a more balanced off-white. 13) Don't set yourself up for trouble with self-imposed deadlines (i.e. "got to have the whole place painted by when Mom and Dad come for Thanksgiving", or whenever) You'll make poorer decisions on colors, and predispose yourself for application issues when you're under time pressure, especially if you've never done much painting before. If you absolutely must get something on the walls (say, to cover over gang tags, or the PO's erotic drawings in the now-children's rooms), simply prep and prime with an off white. Then down tools and take your time on the next round of decisions. A clean off-white is always a good color to have on the walls when choosing among colored sample boards as you get less interference between the existing color and what you're contemplating. 14) Unless your DH is unusual, he probably won't be too interested in, or preoccupied with, the quest for just the perfect tint of a color. Ask around among your girl friends to find someone who likes these things and will happily ruminate with you over all the choices. My DH is only happy when the choices are narrowed ("do you prefer this one or that one"), but even then, be sure to only offer a choice if you're really going to be happy either way. I find it's better to offer him the choice at any earlier stage, as in "I'm thinking of painting the DR green, how does that sound"? If I ask my DH to choose which shade of green (among several), then I won't get anywhere useful, as I usually do have some hierachy of preferences and he invariably chooses the one I like least among the finalists! Paint color choice is the fun part of decorating.

Thank you again folks, for your kind words and advice. Hi Lisa! Good to 'see' you again! About twenty years ago, I saw my cat giving birth and had to assist in the delivery. I was fascinated with the way Mongoose cleaned her babies. Our Lil One, as I said, pees like a champ when stimulated, no poop yet. I'll wait until tomorrow. Some other volunteers are waiting for a 'poop update' as well! Anne, Lunabella was the name I once thought of giving to our very first cat here in the UAE - because she was/is a lunatic LOL (sorry I don't mean to imply that your cat is a lunatic). Nice names - Captain Pete! So cute - and apt! If I could keep any more cats, I would keep all my fosters. I do cry a bit before giving them away but at least I know I tried to give them a good start in life. Their forever homes are carefully selected so I know they'll be happy with their new families. DH has taken to calling her 'Kombdi'. It means 'chicken' in Marathi, our mother tongue (one of the many Indian languages). She doesn't drink properly so I've been stroking the top of her head down to the neck as she starts; I remember reading somewhere long ago that it's what mum cats do to encourage them to feed. She seems to go at it a little energetically then - but then gets lazy again. Little stinker! Oh, almost forgot this while talking about Kombdi - I got a job at the vet's clinic. In early 2008 I was super-excited to work with a very well-established vet practice but sadly it was a short-lived association. The vet I'll be working with, knows me from that other clinic - and I know all the staff there as I go there very often to take care of the FF cats awaiting adoption. It'll be part-time, 5 hrs a day, 5 days a week so I'll get time to devote to my five cats and fosters and other FF work. I'm very happy! Keep those names coming!

There are many different types of good and necessary people in this world.

Some are so good at what they do because they bond with those they help. That usually creates the best outcome for the persons/animals being fostered, but pain for those doing the fostering.

Wear that pain as a badge of honor, for it truly is one. You sacrifice personal feelings to help others have better cats. That is no small sacrifice.

YOU CAN do it! You have to think beyond these kittens! YOU ARE SAVING LIVES! I fell in love with every one of my foster dog and cried each time one left, but I knew they went to good homes and I was able to save more precious lives once my current foster found a good forever home. DON'T adopt them, there are so many more that need you! A temp loving home is better than a shelter any day and you will fall in love with the next ones you foster too. Just think of all the starving homeless sick kitties out there that need a warm loving chance at a forever home, you are a HUGE part of helping them, please don't cave! We need you! Think of it this way, these babies are going to good homes. If you keep them then that poor frightened kitten seeking shelter in the rain and eating garbage may not get a chance at a good life. Think about it!

Thanks everyone. I am going to do the right thing, and give them back to the rescue for homing, and pick up my next pair. It is painful, but I know they will find great homes and I can do more to help the situation if I stay strong. My 3 very spoiled "pet" kitties came from this same Rescue. I have to remember that someone fostered them and gave them back so I could adopt/love them forever. I never knew how painful it must have been for their foster families, and I applaud all of you who have been doing this silently. Hopefully it will get easier with time.
Thanks to all for the "pep talk". You guys are great :-) I was really close to caving and adopting them myself!

You're doing the right thing. As I said..I am too weak. Of course I have given most back. Maybe the rescue group could give your name and number to the adopter, so they could call you and give you an update on their new kitty.
