bunny ears and apple hat

Three weeks ago, my son in New York City called to explain that his friendâÂÂs 4 month old boy was having surgery on his head. His friend had just lost her mother and now this crisis, and she hated the thought of people asking her about the scar and stitches. So he asked me to knit her baby some hats for post surgery the following week.

I set to work and knit 6 hats. One was a red apple hat, another two were from Itty Bitty Hats (the old fashioned football helmet and the bunny ears), a blue aviatrix/aviator's hat, an ear flap hat, and a square hat with tassels at the corners.

The thank you note arrived last week with the story that he had worn the hats all week, and her friends are asking where they can buy them for their babies. I am thrilled!

I wanted to knit especially cute and silly hats to lift their spirits. They had returned home with the baby after unexpectedly spending the night at the hospital to find my box at their door. His surgery had been more extensive than expected with a scar running across the top of his head from ear to ear. They were exhausted and frazzled. The young father, so worried for their baby, broke down in tears at seeing the contents of the box.

Today my son forwarded a picture of her little guy wearing the bunny ears hat I had knit. He is such a cute, plump little boy, and the bunny ears hat is silly and cute on him! All ready for the Easter bunny.
