small vent--relatives!!!

I have a relative that forwards me, in spurts, all sorts of stuff--some nice, some dumb etc.

It is either amber alerts, (check spoof) or angels etc. But today she forwarded one I really did not care for. It is something with the astrology signs, stating if you do not forward it you will get all sorts of bad luck--like 7 years etc. I know this is just junk, but with some of my family traveling over the next week, I really don't need this. I know if something happens she is really going to hear from me. I just sent it back -by error.

Any ideas?

Yup, my grandma does the same thing to me. Forwards me tons of stuff that she knows I have no interest in (religious stuff and she knows I'm not religious, political stuff when she knows we are in disagreement politically, etc.). It drives me nuts, BUT she is my grandmother and if I asked her to stop forwarding me this stuff, she would probably disown me, so I ignore and delete! I would personally rather just keep the peace, especially with family.

I have a friend who sends lots of forwards. Some I don't mind, but others are the 'You must send to 10 people within 10 minutes or else DISASTER will strike your life!' junk! I always delete, delete, delete and never say anything...but it sure does piss me off.

I have a very similar design happening, large format tiles, curbless with trench drain, floating vanity etc. I am very close to the glass install. Curious about your glass install. How is it secured so that it does not wobble? Floor to ceiling, wall brace, or? I am considering a panel about 72" high by 54" long, the length of the shower, fixed to the wall and secured to the floor without screws because of danger of puncturing membrane. Panel would be stabilized by a return panel 8-12" across the shower opening. We were going to try it first without a door. Thanks.

First, you should consult your local code inspectors, preferably talking to a real person who can tell you what is required in your jurisdiction. If you decide you must have MUA, it is probably best to hire an HVAC company, who has experience in these kinds of installations. There have been a lot of home-brew DIY type systems discussed, especially over on the Appliance Forum, but whatever you do must be acceptable to the code guys. Don't expect the appliance manufacturer or sales person to give you adequate advice - they will never risk killing a sale by admitting that a MUA system is required which may be more expensive than the range and vent hood combined. The capacity of your vent hood is generally determined by the type of cooking you do, and what you can afford. In my jurisdiction, the code guy looked at what my range's manufacturer recommended for venting. If all you do is simmer, poach, roast, or reheat take-out, the 100-200 cfm recommended by that GreenBuildingAdvisor may be enough. But if you want to stir-fry, sear, or grill indoors, you will need every single cfm you can afford to clear out the smoke and grease from your living space. I really don't think you can grill indoors unless you have a hood that extracts much more than 400 cfm - probably requires 1000 cfm or greater. As for the size of the vent hood relative to your range, the 6" wider recommendation is for optimum performance. But in the real world, many of us have to compromise due to space or budget issues. My particular work-around is to do my high heat searing or stir-frying on a burner that is centred under my hood - at least my cook top affords me that choice, with several burners of the same output. fredanj -- The standard height for kitchen counter tops is 36" off the finished floor or sub floor -- whichever you have. That breaks down to cabinets which are 35-1/4" tall, plus a 3/4" thick counter top material. The important measurement is from the floor or the shelf (whichever) to below the counter top. Don't include the thickness of the counter top -- think top of a pot without the lid. The shelf below might be removed or cut down so the height can be adjusted if necessary to make the DW fit. Expect you have the brand and serial number of the existing dishwasher or the original plan for the cabinet design that might give you the actual size of the existing cabinet opening. The width of the opening will need to be made slightly smaller for a Miele anyway so there would be a bit of carpentry. With the schematics in hand, whomever will do the carpentry should be able to tell you what needs to be done about the height, if anything. Also, I would check on the plumbing and electrical requirements at the same time in case something needs to be moved. rebunky: I've spent the past couple of days just silently circling my kitchen and pondering -- DH thinks this reno has sent me off the edge (why are these kitchen posts fraught with unavoidable puns?!). Have also polled a number of my friends out here, and they think it's super counterproductive (heh...counter...ok) to tear down H-CoW to open up space/light, only to put in a new 36-40" wide CoW (floor to ceiling!). I actually spent time yesterday climbing up and down a ladder, connected pieces of posterboard in tow, and mocked up a wall -- tried to see how much light would be blocked from my bank of windows: lots...far too much. Even with that little undercab window pulling light in, I felt like I introduced a mini-cave into my kitchen. Just can't do it. One of the main reasons I'd move the cooktop to perimeter would be to take advantage of the better ventilation (up and out). So, if I made the move, I wouldn't also keep the downdraft. (Envisioning people watching me cook, and I can't get the vision of Graham Kerr out of my head!) I did realize that my current oldie electric coil cooktop has its panel of controls/knobs to the right, so burners have always been ~ 8-9" from the island edge. I may take Pal's suggestion (TY!) of widening the island, but will add the 3" to the cooktop side/cabinet. This may squish that walkway just a bit, but will still leave us with a ~ 36" aisle. The cooktop edge will still be only 4" from the island edge, but the smallest burner of the cooktop is another 2" in from that. Frankly, we decided on this particular cooktop knowing we'd primarily use the large center burner, and the bridge to the left (closest to the downdraft for more effective venting, relatively speaking). We've never found our current 6" burners of much use, but when we have, pot handles are ALWAYS turned toward center. I'm now hoping that widening the cooktop cabinet to 36" may open up the possibility of a small drawer directly beneath the cooktop. With the vent hood housing being 30"w, perhaps this leaves enough space on either side for the drawer hardware to attach (don't know that drawer glides span 34", however). We shall see. A neighbor used to send me chain e mails all the time and I used to just delete them. Then she sent me a recipe one and I finally told her that I no longer forwarded chain letters and if she didn't want the chain broken she should send them to some one else. It worked. She also sent all kinds of alerts too - but I think she finally got tired of me sending her the Snopes web site that debunked whatever alarm she was sending.

I feel you pain, Marie. I have several people that send me dozens, scores, even hundreds of "FW" messages.

I have a Outlook Express mail rule set up. Anything with FW in the subject line from these people goes directly to the trash basket. The few that slip by get deleted, unopened.

Once or twice I tried "asking nicely" to not be included in these types of mass mailings. The request fell on deaf ears. I never mentioned it again; I just began deleteing everything.

God knows my heart; I don't prove my devotion by passing on junk mail to irritate someone else. I have strong political beliefs; no forwarded message is going to change them. What will be, will be...forwarded email curses can't do me any harm. So, I try to smile and delete, delete, delete...or let the OE rules do it for me.

i have that same ordeal and time and time again i've made it known that i don't do chain letters and forwards of forwards of forwards is just something i am not interested in.

one person i told that got mad at me and hasn't sent me anything or for that matter, spoken to me since i asked her not to do it. her excuse was she ws too busy to clean them up. told her i was too busy to read them then, so they would be deleted immediately.

another friend has been told the same thing by many of us. she can't get it through her head. so if it's something i read and i think it might be a chain, i don't go to that last paragraph. then i don't know it was a chain (although in reality i do). for awhile there, i even blocked her. i feel if it was something life shattering or that important, my phone would ring.

i'm not one to forward emails, it really has to be something, but i clean them up and i never send to bulk people so that everyone sees who its being sent to. i send to myself and everyone else is in the blind copy (BCC) line. this way not everyone's addresses are floating out there a zillion times.

too many people abuse the email system. imagine if they had to pay "postage" each time they sent these annoying emails.

My youngest daughter got her first computer not long ago, and started the same drill....10 or more a day....I finally told her that it was creating spam into my outlook by the dozens, and to please stop or I would have to shut my computer down because of it. Of course I signed it "love mom" and they stopped that day.
I think some just don't understand the velocity of it all..

I rarely get them from family, but when I do I just delete and let it go.

But when it's friends/acquaintances I do reply that I don't want to receive them anymore. When it's been those "forward for luck" things I just ask nicely, nothing more. When it's some "urgent" message that's a hoax, I am not so nice. I send them the link or copy/paste they Snopes report and tell them they are spreading rumors and should know better. They tell me "I don't have time to check every email for truth." Well, then grow up and don't forward it. When they are religious or political forwards that I don't agree with, I know that person really doesn't know me well. I tell them I disagree, and we'll both get along better if we don't share political/religious emails w/each other.

I'm afraid I've become blunt and maybe not very nice about it. I keep the peace w/relatives, but they are not a major problems. But there are a couple people I know, but not close to, who need to get some common sense. I think they need to be told how foolish they look. ;o)

If you do not want to tell her not to send them, then just delete...or set your machine to delete anything that says FW in the subject line...

if your friend is like the one I have...she hardly ever bothers to say hello or how are you ...she just emails the junk so I don't really feel obligated to read her stuff...and I choose not to hurt her feelings so I just delete or have the machine do it for me.

My BFF forwarded a little survey to me once. One of the questions was who will be the person least likely to answer this survey. She named me. Knows me well. I thought it was pretty funny though.

When I opened my email for the first time after being away for 6 weeks, there were 135 messages. 26 were legitimate from places that I have accounts or have done business with. 18 were misc. spam. The rest (91) were FW's of all kinds from a nephew. He sends mostly religious themed or chain email. I don't open any of it anymore. He knew I was away, but still he sent this junk. I love him dearly, but I sure wish he would cease and desist. I just can't hurt his feelings by saying STOP!

I guess I am a lucky one. None of my relatives send me that sort of junk.

I do however have a friend that does, but after asking to get off her mailing list it ceased.

I think, the best option you do have is to block the "FW this mail option".

Or, just turn it around and forward everything right back at her?

When I am out of town for a few days I unsubscribe from the mailing lists I am on, but still get hundreds of emails. I wish I had gazanias problem with only 135 emails in 6 weeks. LOL
