What to do first?
Comments (2)Search this forum for leveling issues of the past. In particular there is one where a guy was leveling his bermuda lawn with sand. If you search on bermuda, sand, and my user name you should find it if it has not expired. He did a great job. One thing to be sure you do not do is to use a rototiller for anything. They will fluff your soil in the garden but that is not what you want on the lawn. A rototiller was probably responsible for the bumpy surface you have now. Basically I would do it like you suggested originally but make the aeration optional. Don't bring in enough soil/sand to build up the height of your garden. Just use enough to level it. If you use too much then you change the drainage and that can be a huge problem....See MoreWhere to put the TV in the family room?
Comments (9)What are the issues with where the TV is now? Before you mount the TV over the fireplace, make sure that you have a comfortable viewing angle from the sectional. If the TV is too high or the sofa isn't in a good place, you may have to tilt your head up to watch TV--if you are watching a long movie, that can get tiring. I kind of like the TV where it is now. You have a "focal wall" instead of a focal point, so to speak. Depending on the amount of room in that corner, I'd look for a corner TV stand that would make the best use of the space. Right now, with the TV in the corner, everyone sitting on the sectional has a decent view of the screen. If you keep the sectional where it is and mount the TV over the fireplace, at least half of the sectional will be at right angles to the screen and people sitting there would have to turn their heads awkwardly to see it. Not an issue if you only ever have two people watching TV at a time. More of an issue if several people use that room to watch TV on a daily basis....See MoreLighting advice needed!
Comments (1)Hi Brenda Cayton, What do you mean by 'gutting it', since that might imply you're intending to make wholesale changes possibly including structural changes. If instead you intend to update or renovate within the existing structure, think through your style preferences and more modest modifications you can make. Do you intend to move any interior walls? Are you going to move lighting/plumbing/ heating locations or utilize existing placements? etc. For your specific Entry I would suggest a door change from solid to glass (or partial glass) to provide more daylight. You might consider a 3/4 height wall (instead of the iron rail) to make the basement stairs less significant to the Entry. When you do get close to light fixture choices given the existing locations and your desire for iron, look to Hubbardton Forge or Restoration Hardware for inspiration (as just two of the many companies that offer lighting with iron elements). Your style preferences may guide you to others. Good luck....See MoreHow to get rid of goatheads/stickers in backyard?!
Comments (1)Goathead, aka puncture vine, is an annual plant that grows in soils that have a low soil pH and lack organic matter. The first step in control is to have a good soil test done and then begin to correct any soil deficiencies that are there. Since any plants you see now probably are dead (winter killed) spraying a plant poison will do little. Digging out the roots of dead plants does little since any new growth will be from seeds, those burrs that may be laying around....See Moresixtyohno
