Need help with cabinet hardware for trash pull out area

I'd love some help deciding what hardware to use at the end of our island. The left side drawer and cabinet are both fake fronts. The right side is a working drawer w/ trash pull out below. I'm planning to use round knobs for all other cabinet doors, but I figured I would use a pull for the trash pull out. But, if I do that, then what should I use on the other cabinets on this end of the island? What combo would look best? Thanks so much for any help.. My brain is mush now that we're nearing the end.:-)

Kitchen hardware we picked..

Knobs - 1 1/4"

Small pulls - 3 3/4"

Large pulls - 6 1/4"

Just to give you an idea of what all pulls look like, we used 4" D pulls in ORB. They are slightly larger than your small pulls, but with no brass trim. They come 1" away from the cabinet and are very comfortable for DH and me. All pulls resolved the combo problem for us.

Anyone else have an opinion? I really do want to use a mix of knobs and pulls in the rest of the kitchen, but I'm stumped on this one area. If the trash pull out cabinet has a pull in the top center of the cabinet and the top drawers have small pulls then what should the left cabinet have? I'm wondering if one little knob would look funny, since the cabinet right next to it won't have one.

Mileady - I have the same situation you do with trim on the door, knobs, and bin pulls. One idea I don't mind is to put the knob in the middle. The other I'm tossing around is to buy two handles that go with my other hardware - one for a horizontal cabinet with a hydraulic hinge that needs to pull "up" and one for the trash pull out. I also have a cookbook shelf turned to the side on the end of a run of cabinets, which means there is a false door on the front. Of course that door needs a pull of some sort, but I keep imagining someone coming over and yanking on it thinking it's functional.

I have a knob (I think it is 1.25") on the 18" pull out trash cabinet and it has worked fine for 2 years. I have bin pulls on the drawers in the kitchen, but I was not sure how it would look on the trash, which I thought looked more like a cabinet door. So, we went with the knob and it works fine. However, since I finished my kitchen there was another post about this and many people showed pictures of bin pulls on the pull out trash mixed with knobs on the lower cab doors and it looked just fine. So, either way will work.

Sorry to bump this after so much time. Here's a picture of the trash compactor. This is the pull out trash/recycling system that I want. http://www.pullsdirect.com/rev-a-shelf-5349-2150dm-2-5349-series-double-50-quart-pull-out-waste-container-with-soft-close-slides/p1573591. It says that it fits in a 15 inch width cabinet. It took me this long to contact a few custom cabinet makers in my area. 2 of them have told me that to replace the trash compactor with the double pull out trash/recycling that I want, I would need to not only have a cabinet door/face, but also they'd need to create a cabinet box and a frame too. However, by doing this, the width of the side of the cabinet box would mean that they wouldn't be able to put in the pull-out that I want, which needs a width of 14.8 inches (the trash compactor is 15 inches), so I'd need to select a different one, which would have a much smaller bin size. The one I want has 2 50 quart bins, and I would have to go down to 2 27 quart bins, I think, to get it to fit, which is a big difference. I'm also talking to a third custom cabinet guy who said that there might be a way to be able to put in a "floor" to where the trash compactor was, so he could install the double pull out I want (which is bottom mounted, not side mounted) without any sides, and then put some type of frame at the top only, so something that the cabinet door could rest against while closed, but said he'd have to think about how to create it, and get back to me. I'm waiting to hear from him to see if he's thought of something that would work. In addition, the price estimates I've gotten so far were substantially higher than I was expecting. Alison, I'd love to know the details of how you and your dh did this. Did you add a whole cabinet box? If not, what did you mount your pullout to, and what does your door rest against? The pull on my trash pull-out is a knob, but it's mounted on the recessed panel of the door, and works fine. I think I had to use a shorter screw, but you could also put a thin piece of wood on the back of the door, to use the screws that come with the pulls, and to reinforce the door panel. Adding: When I first installed the pull-out, I had a cup pull with the extra piece of wood on the back, but later changed to a knob to match the sink cabinet knobs.

Hi! I'm actually considering the hardware you show (is it Hickory/Belwith Keeler?). My KD suggests knobs on upper doors & pulls on lower since pulls sometime get caught on pants pockets. I can confirm this since we currently have a mix -- I changed hardware when we 1st moved-in & lower drawers still all have knobs.

If you really don't want to move away from knobs on the lower doors & drawers, you might consider not putting anything on the false front panels (see Susie's picture -- she doesn't have anything on false front at sink). Put knob on drawer & pull on trash -- you definitely want a pull on the trash, we changed my Mom's out from a knob years ago, it is too small an area to easily pull the trash drawer out.

Also use the size pull that is comfortable for your hand. My cabinet designer says you'll get the same force from both size pulls.

mitri89, could you do me a huge favor and tell me what the base of your knob measures and the grip part of the handles? I was looking today at ordering those same handles and knobs from but I only have 3/8" area for attachment on my cabs due to lots of detailing. I emailed CS but they were of no help.

For your cabinets I think it would look OK to have the larger pull on your trash area and continue with knobs on the others if that is what is on the other cabinets. If you look through the FKB lots of people have a mix of hardware and often have something different for the trash pull.

Thank you, Maks. The hardware is Amerock French Country. I found them all at Knobs4Less.com for a very good price, ordered a sample of each and love them(especially for the cheap price).:-)

I want to stick with knobs even for the lower cabinets, but I think I may have come up with a solution for the end of the island. How do you think it would look if I did knobs on the drawers there but centered pulls on both lower cabinets? The left side one could be used for a towel holder. A prep sink is planned for right above there, so it would serve a function instead of just being there for looks. Here's a quick sketch of what I'm talking about. What do you think?
