What's going on with the ALT?

When we do a degrees and press the ALT 167 and get a degree mark, now it takes me to another page and I lose the one I'm on. Then I tried the alt 167 (or whatever it was I hit) and got a smiley face, then it took me off the page again. This never happen before is something different?

Here is a link on how to use it. I found when you have the num lock it works better, but it never did that before.

One more question..........
Why are the postings delayed now after posting? I wanted to add the link and the post never came up till now.

I'm so illiterate--how does that work? I have a mac and see the "Option" key on the bottom-right has a little "alt" in the upper corner, but it doesn't do anything for me. Any ideas?

I talked with a rep from a nearby town that sells a similar solar tube. Rather than guess how well it does, she is going to bring a tube. I am tearing down a barn and before I finish it, we will install the tube and take before and after light meter readings. She says that on a sunny day, they can provide ~32,000 lumens or so. Combined with the light from the south and east walls, that should be enough light I would think. Mike

The zone issue is likely the reason that I have run into the problem of not being able to find these trees locally. There are only a hand full of JM's that can be found locally. It is quite difficult to find any JM much over about 3'. The big box green house steins has a couple larger ones, but not much larger and the larger JM's are green leaf. I'd have a real hard time finding more that about 3 varieties total of JM's locally, all in small sizes. I was going to mail order one of the other varieties like Twombly's, but that limits the size quite a bit. Despite the zone, however, I see many JM's that have been planted in my area for many years that seem to do just fine. So I don't worry too much about planting them. I know paperbark is hardy here, and I did consider it, again for some reason, I can't find it locally. I may have to search some nurseries out of the area more, but in the state. I found it available for mail order from some out of state nurseries. Which I think would do just find if I had it shipped when dormant. I will have to look at the Beech. I think I have seen them on the list of trees that a local nursery carries, but can't think of what they look like. Thanks Jamie

blondelle, Thank you. I do know all the "bad" things about marble, but I still am going to pull the plug, because of it's beauty. I will go with the Vermont Danby as I think it is a bit more durable. I know Quartz is all the rage, but 20+ years ago so was Corian, so that's what I got. Although it has held up beautifully (solid white), I am done with "FAKE" materials as to me they look fake. I have yet to see a marble look alike that looks like marble to me. I'm a decorator, so perhaps I have a keener eye, but I just can't do it. I'd rather have etching etc, in a real material than have a perfect finish on a fake one. Everyone is different, that's just how I role.

Hold down the alt key then press in the numberkeys on the right side to get a symbol.(press number lock) Try it now ALT 155 = ÃÂ¢

On my notebooks you need to press the Alt key plus the function key, then the number on the numpad.

But it is 'supposed to' make the cent sign, right?

Ok...trying to make the degree symbol using ALT167 with the number lock on.

I'm thinking that the ALT codes haven't worked here at GW for some time.

Well I see the degree sign in the message box, but when I preview it, I see a question mark in dark background triangle.

Can anyone make a degree symbol?

Generally, what I do when I want to post a message with a special character, is to just type my post up in Microsoft Word, insert the symbol from the dropdown menu, and then copy and paste it into the Message Box here. For example, here is a sentence with the degree symbol:

At the moment, itÃ¢ÂÂs 49ÃÂ°F in Seattle.

You can usually do this fine in emails but lately it just sends me to another page and I lose the email.
The Garden web seems to have problems with symbols. I will sometimes do it twice and it will "sometimes" work.

Thanks for the site. I used to have a list that was great,but none of them work any more. Let's see if the degrees one works this morning. It is now 18ÃÂº in the area.

You may need to adjust the settings on YOUR browser to see them correctly.

I had switched over to FireFox, but I had not changed how characters are viewed - so I seeing some wacky stuff. I changed my settings and now all is good Ã¢ÂÂº

Ahhhhhhhh.......lightbulb moment.

I'm using Firefox, and went to the top and chose
View,
Character encoding,
and chose Unicode UTF-8

Now I can see the correct things in sue_va's post as well in the other posts.

You're welcome. I was thinking I must be nutso or something since the above posters seemed to 'think' they were posting the symbols just fine. I was wondering if they looked at their posts after submitting them...silly me.

Users of Chrome as well, can fix it. Click on the wrench, Tools, Encoding and check Unicode UTF-8
