A flock of turkeys

Yes, of course we had pumpkin pie, but I also made these turkeys for the kids for Thanksgiving dinner. The bodies are Marshmallow pinwheels, cut in half and the base and the back are sugar cookies. A neck is made with chocolate frosting and eyes, beaks and tails are piped on with colored frosting and a pastry bag.

The kids loved them. Makayla promptly bit the head off hers:

Leftovers were pretty darned good with a cup of coffee, too!

How cute, Annie!! (Both Makayla & Bud AND the turkeys!) LOL! How lucky you are to have grandkiddies to enjoy and make special treats for. I'm sure they loved those cookies!

You're right, your birds don't have to be with the turkeys to pick something up, but it sure increases the chances. Sun light, drying and time all kill certain pathogens, although not all, and so reduce the chances that your birds will pick something up after the turkeys have passed through. Airborne transmission is another factor, and is more likely to infect your birds when they're right next to a sneezing turkey as opposed to passing through the same airspace a day or week later. You need to worry about any number of poultry diseases that can be passed between chickens abd turkeys, salmonella, AI, not H5N1, the big bad media scare AI, but there are strains in this country, and have been for years, which still occur and have been shown to be passed from wild birds. They'll cause intrastate movement of birds to be stopped, and complete depopulation of your entire flock if it's found to be infected. Roundworms, whipworms, mites and lice are easily transmitted, and are very common.

Was out in the back yard this afternoon spraying my trees and heard the familar call of the hen turkey nearby. She was in the next door neighbors back yard and had brought her family with her. Seven cute, very young turkeys followed her everwhere she went. They must only be a few days old The babies were staying close to mom and she was squatting down with all of them under her breast. Only problem was, she decided it was a nice place to stay, but the neighbors dog uses that same area when he is outside. I lured her to the fence with some black oil sunflower seeds and let her and the babies out of the yard through the gate. She still knows me and was not a bit afraid.

Well, to any who have followed my messages on "birds" and previously on this "wildlife" forum, I apologize for repetition. However, I have become very intrigued with the whole topic of wild turkeys. Up until last year I had never even seen one. Since then, I have had many encounters with my neighbours' domesticated wild turkeys, who have come to visit me regularly, even to the point of Mr. Tom jumping onto my lap while I was sitting on my porch. About a week ago a WILD mom turkey and her 7 chicks were perched on the gate on another neighbour's lane - a beautiful sight. I don't know what makes them come or go, but they are really quite interesting. You may want to check out some of the recent postings on the "bird" forum. Apparently corn is a big lure. Annie, your turkeys and grandkids are adorable. Are those LoftHouse sugar cookies I see for your turkey parts? My kids swear they are the best sugar cookie you can buy.

Maggie, they are a really sugary cookie. There is a graham base then marshmallow on top of that and then they are dipped in chocolate. I think they are made by Keebler.

The kids are so cute even when they are eating the heads off of turkeys!

Glad to know what a pinwheel cookie is. Taking your idea and doing this project next year with Maggie. So so cute.

AWWWW, those turkeys are almost as cute as the grandbabies, Annie! How did you come up with the idea to make the turkeys that way, it's very clever. Can you use the canned chocolate frosting?

Minsue, any sugar cookie will do, including Lofthouse. And yes, those are, LOL, I was planning to make homemade cookies for that project and then had to work extra hours each of the three days before Thanksgiving, which put me behind on my cooking.

In spite of that, I was determined to make these, Makayla found them in some magazine (maybe Taste of Home?) and showed them to me because she thought they were so "cute".

Donna, the magazine directions actually said to use canned chocolate frosting but I don't like the consistency because it never really sets up, it stays so sticky if you cover it. If you were just going to make them and not try to keep them overnight, I think it would work fine.

Maggie, those Marshmallow Pinwheels are kind of like MoonPies and truthfully, I think half a MoonPie would work just fine too since you cut the cookie in half. The Pinwheels are round with a center hole, like a marshmallow filled donut, kind of, a cookie layer topped with marshmallow then dunked into chocolate. The ones I bought were Nabisco, but I know Little Debbie makes a "knock off" version.

RR, this is a VERY easy project, I was surprised at how easily it went. Maggie could frost the cookies to hold them together, and the more frosting, the better!

Jessica, it's not only turkeys I bite the heads off. And there's your straight line, run with it. (grin) Completely off-thread, I got a new email with my new DSL. The "yahoo wizard" was supposed to convert my address book, send notices, etc. Of course, it didn't. Send me an email, will ya, so I have your address?
