'shade' means little ... on words alone bright shade.. cave ... very bright.. etc ... its hard to be definitive.. w/o being able to understand such ... i have some full sun plants.. in near all day shade.. from 60 foot trees.. but there is clear blue sky above.. apparently.. they get enough light.. that said.. the bigger the flower.. usually means.. the more energy they need.. and as light declines.. its ability to make a lot of large flowers starts to falter.. i guess when it all boils down.. you are just going to have to try things.. also... for most of the growing season.. 4 to 9 or 10 pm.. is a heck of a lot of sun ... presuming that is what you meant ... when 8 hours is usually considered full sun ... there isnt really much that will out and out die ... its all about vigor and performance.. and if something struggles.. you move it to more light ... if you have it ... i am sure our friends will come up with many specific suggestions ... and also keep in mind that a lot of the 'shade' plants are just shade tolerant ... and can take a lot of sun.. usually based on how well they are watered.. its all about whether the plant has enough water.. to offset increased sun.. e.g. hosta... its when they transpire more water than they are able to process .... that they start getting real ugly ... ken

Or a leucophyllum. I have a spot on the south side of the house which is hades on earth this time of year. Of course, it is THE only spot I have to put my plant of Annie Laurie McDowell. There is direct sun from about 9:30 AM until after 5 PM and with the angle of the sun now, it reflects directly off the mirrored living room window a story above it. The spot is about ten feet away from the house wall, against the top of a newer retaining wall with a wire fence above it. I have the Atmore Lamarque, Reve d'Or and Annie. I planted tomatoes there last summer and this window actually cooked them to death. I've temporarily shaded Annie with canned plants. The awful cat here died last weekend and he's buried between the two upper climbers with a five gallon leucophyllum planted directly over him. It is LOVING the heat and tremendous reflected light from that mirrored window! It was flowering before, but now it is paved with its lavender flowers. Kim

Looks like Ornate Ruffles is the favorite today and yes, njmomma it is a good performer. Bud count was down a little this year, but still in the upper teens. It has been in the 20s. Painting the Roses Red is one of those flowers that really frustrates me. It can look gorgeous and it has a good bud count and has been blooming since July 10, but most of the blooms are splotchy. Celeste, Cold Hearted is a Margo Reed intro. I just got it last year and I'm really loving it. It's registered as 5". I think it's bigger, but not a really large flower. Rita and Nancy, I love Autumn Jewels. It always looks good--and it's late! Val

Sorry, folks, I didn't mean to be away from the forum for so long. Things have been very hectic and I didnt get a chance sooner than this to thank everyone for responding. Autumn Tryst has been a super bloomer and the last flower finally withered today. And I just saw that Harvest of Memories is putting out another flower stalk! Gosh, I am hooked and it's back to poring over earlier posts and Iris vendor websites. I'll have to get mighty creative to figure out where I am going to plant any new irises; space is so limited. Argh!! Serendipity - love your Iris. I think the beardless irises don't do well here so enjoying seeing yours. Jo
