The Music Man! I love the film version with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. The music always makes me happy.

Musicals! Socks, you're calling my name! I have so many favorites I couldn't even type them all out :)
My current favs would be Sister Act (on Broadway, not the film) and Jersey Boys (fab) and the very best of all time was The Boy From Oz with Hugh Jackman. And Wicked was great and so was Mary Poppins (not just for kids). I love Broadway.

I've seen a lot of musicals (new and old) and have even been in a few. Would have to say my favorite is still a good production of Fiddler on the Roof.

West Side Story, and many other oldies by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, etc. And just the other day on FB we were talking about Kismet, with its gorgeous music adapted from melodies by Alexander Borodin.

Guys & Dolls

Evita

I saw my first "Broadway show 3 yrs ago, it was "Gypsy", I think it's my favorite. Patti Lupone starred. I saw "In The Heights" the same day. Since then I've seen "Next To Normal", "La Cage Aux Folles" with Kelsey Grammer, "Hair" and "Sister Act" last Dec. Sister Act is a close runner up to Gypsy.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

Never met a Musical I didn't like. :)

But..."Moving Out" and "Mama Mia" are real favorites.

And, oh, loved "Chicago".

And, maybe "Cats" as an all-time favorite - have seen
it 3 times. And, I noticed it is on tour in a come-back
right now.

The Music Man...it was my senior play in High school and I played Mrs Paroo.
I still remember all the songs.

The Sound of Music!

The Unsinkable Molly Brown

Love musicals, but they don't do many films anymore because of the costs. I have never been to NY so have also never seen anything on Broadway. My favorites are Oklahoma and My Fair Lady, but I love them all.

The Phantom of the Opera

Hands down The Sound of Music. It inspired me to visit Austria years ago.

I saw 'Phantom of the Opera' and 'Wicked' when they were in Tulsa. Both were fantastic. For movies, I love "Oklahoma", "Sound of Music", and "singing in the Rain".

I love them all. I really want to see Wicked again. I just saw Phantom in Las Vegas.. very good. I wish they would do more of them.

Singing in the Rain!

Like a lot of them, but probably my favorite is Cole Porter's Kiss Me Kate, followed by ShowBoat. If I remember correctly, Howard Keel & Kathryn Grayson played the leads in both MGM musicals. I also saw ShowBoat on stage in SF years ago.

My very favorite is Le Mis. I've seen it twice in Dallas. After seeing it the first time I read the book.I have a cd of the music and never tire of it.I play it in my car.

Hard to choose.

Guys and Dolls and Carousel were two of the earliest I attended as a child, and they are still big favorites.

I am not a fan of musicals, in fact, I have never seen a musical that I liked.

I've never been to Broadway, although my daughter and son-in-law (who live in the Baltimore, MD area) love to travel to NYC and often attend Broadway shows.

That said, I do enjoy live entertainment of all kinds, including musicals. Years ago, we took the kids to a performance of Oklahoma somewhere in the Black Hills of SD. Absolutely loved it, and still play the CD and sing along with the songs from time to time - in my car... where no one can hear me :-)

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is without a doubt my all time favorite.

I also really liked Wicked and would see that again. I liked the Lion King on Broadway, also.

When kids were in high school they put on a production of Into the Woods and that was really good.

A three way tie: My Fair Lady, Oklahoma and South Pacific. My Fair Lady because we studied it in music class in junior high. Oklahoma and South Paci9fic because my Mom had the original cast albums on 78's and played them frequently. All three are like old friends to me. I saw South Pacific on Broadway in 2009, with my best friend Sue.

That is tough! My favorites are Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, Sound of Music and The King and I.

Classics - The Sound Of Music and The King and I
Pure fun - La Cage Aux Folles
Camp - The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Wanda - I love The Unsinkable Molly Brown but have never have seen it on stage. What a great pick. :-)

Jesus Christ Super Star was good.

Here are my top three:

West Side Story (I've probably seen it 30 times)
Hair (love the music and loved the movie, too)
Jesus Christ Superstar (we saw it live and it was unbelieveable)
The Music Man (I feel like playing drum major when I hear "Seventy-Six Trombones) It's so happy!

My favorite - Brigadoon.

Other favorites that I've seen on Broadway:

Phantom of the Opera (5 times - when relatives visit that's the one they always want to see!)

Annie Get Your Gun with Bernadette Peters - surprisingly she wasn't too annoying. I have trouble thinking of an Annie Oakley who looks and sounds like a Kewpie doll.

Fiddler on the Roof - twice

Cats - once was enough.

Les Mis

Jersey Boys - lots of fun.

And shall we not forget

Menopause The Musical

Saw it by myself. Sure wish it would come back here!

Saw many plays on Broadway, and with Philadelphia being a tryout town, saw many before they hit Broadway.

Funny Girl with newcomer Barbra Streisand.
Burton and Streisand in "Private Lives"
"Cabaret" with Gwen Virdon.
and many, many more.

Les Mis
Brigadoon
JC Superstar
Camelot
42nd Street
Gypsy!

I love Broadway!

My all time favorite is Paint Your Wagon.
I finally saw Fiddler on the Roof and liked it.
Also liked Godspell. Probably others.

Pooh Bear

Phantom of the Opera and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I've never seen The King and I live but I think I would love it.

Yup, Fiddler and Oklahoma, too.
But also Pippin (saw Ben Vereen in it when I was just in junior high school oh-so-many years ago).
And 1776 (which opened Friday night for a run at Ford's Theatre in DC!)
I love some of the songs from Guys and Dolls.

Wow, 30some posts and not a single mention of 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou'? A great Coen brothers movie loosely, and I do mean loosely, based on Homers 'Odyssey'.

Ron

The Music Man
Camelot

I'm not a fan of musicals, but "The sound of Music" and "Brigadoon" took my heart away. "West Side Story" is right up near the top also. I liked "Oklahoma" too.

Notice, I've picked shows that have real music and a good story line. Both of these items have to be present for me to give a thumbs up.

'Notice, I've picked shows that have real music and a good story line' :)

Gee - I thought I did too -- sorry.

"Oklahoma" was the first musical I ever heard. My mother played the cast album of 78's on our *Victrola*.

"Show Boat" and "Carousel" are favorites, also "Porgy & Bess". Love the schmaltz of "The Merry Widow" and "The Student Prince". "West Side Story" was great -- and "The Music Man".

Caran - I loved all of your choices too, and most of the others as well, I have rarely seen a musical I didn't like! I could really add many, many more to my list.

(I have a friend who lives in the country and takes a 4 hour train ride to get to NYC and he says he would like to live on Broadway :)

Let me add Man of La Mancha and also I Love You You're Perfect Now Change.

have enjoyed several of the mentioned, but an american in paris, was outstanding...

I am probably one of the few that liked the movie Yentyl.

Fiddler will always be one of my favorites.

Our local high school has put on some great musicals through the years. They did South Pacific in the 70's and I still remember the teachers singing "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right out of My Hair" and laughing for what seemed like forever.

Mine is Jesus Christ Superstar, makes me cry every time. Followed by West Side Story and A Chorus Line.

Going to add Funny Girl to my list.

Love Phantom of the Opera and Camelot as a close second

Oh gosh.. I own Jesus Christ Superstar and completely forgot about it. I get goose bumps when Yvonne Alleman sings...

Oklahoma and Mama Mia....both for the music.

Our local PBS is showing a marvelous program with interviews, history and highlights of so many classic musicals.

It's called "Oscar Hammerstein II -- Out Of My Dreams."
