A tad bit annoyed!!! AARP

A couple of days ago, I got a letter from AARP with 3 identical petitions for me to sign and send along with a donation to someone in Long Beach, CA (name+AARP) I do not sign any petitions but what really ticked me of what was printed on the outside of the envelope:

YOU HAVE NOT RESPONDED TO OUR PREVIOUS LETTERS.

To me that is almost like a collection letter or???

Your feelings? Should I send it to main office? Trash??

It's just junk mail - why are you even worrying about it? Recycle the crap.

AARP is doing nothing personal for you, so why are you considering doing anything for them?

The personal thing they do to you is sell your address to other people who in turn will send you junk mail or spam.

Yes Tomatofest does sell the red PL brandywine as red brandywine. It is a legitamate variety even if TF markets it a bit untruthfully, IMO. I have also gotten several packets with stray seed and at least one mislabeled packet. That does not mean they are selling one variety as something else, just that their quality control is poor. They blamed student workers in my case. Dix Doights du Naples has that robust tree like growth early on like in your picture. It has Opalka shaped fruit but they are smaller and in clusters. But if it is a TF quality control problem you could have anything. They are good about replacing mislableed seed packets....Except for the Brandywine....I did get a stray seed from Rose in with my Red PL Brandywine. It was a much better variety. I also got Limmony and Lucky Cross grown out from stray seeds. Other varieties were not so easy to identify.

Persuasion is my favorite, too. I love the theme of second chances in a life that has turned out to be disappointing. It has a bittersweet quality that has always appealed to me. Having said that, I really do like them all. Mansfield Park is fascinating to me. Some of the moral issues that are being weighed in the book seem trivial to modern sensibilities, others are timeless; but I like its exploration of what it is that makes a good person, and how easily the world overlooks these true qualities. Northanger Abbey is the lightest novel she wrote. If you grew up reading Victoria Holt and similar writers as I did, you will laugh at this wonderful spoof of the gothic novel, popular in Austen's day as well as the 1960's and 70's. Sense and Sensibility is a story of two sisters who embody the extremes of a debate going on in Austen's own time. Marianne (Sensibility) stands for the Romantic movement, all emotion and aesthetic experience and the sublime experience of nature. Elinor (Sense) expresses the values of the Enlightenment, self-discipline, prudence, knowledge, and moral virtue. Each one has something the others lack, and in the story, they both learn this. I love this book, too. Emma you already know, a story of just how wrong an intelligent, overly confident young woman can be. And Pride and Prejudice you are reading now. I'm thinking that pretty soon it will be time for me to re-read Austen yet again. Rosefolly

Oh! Cassandra is one of my all-time favorite characters, and I Capture the Castle is in my Top 5 of all-time favorite novels. Long-timers here at RP have repeatedly read my paeans to ICTC, but I can't help myself for singing this refrain. I first read it almost fifty years ago; then I read it over and over for about ten years. But in the early 1970s I lost track of it and spent the next quarter of a century trying to find it again. In the mid 1990s a now-defunct bookseller with a glorious catalogue ran a question to its subscribers asking what out-of-print books they would most like to see back in print. My choice, of course, was I Capture the Castle and I wrote up a piece about why I liked it so much and why I thought it should be reissued. The bookseller printed my piece and the response was tremendous. All this was turned over to the publisher and voila! within a couple of years (1998, if I remember correctly) I Capture the Castle was back for new generations of readers to enjoy. I like to think I was instrumental in its return, but I figure it was bound to happen, with or without me...I Capture the Castle was fondly remembered by so many other readers. Well, as much as I like Cassandra, I do see how she could be a tad annoying sometimes. Just a couple of examples: 1) Stephen, the son of the Mortmains' deceased housekeeper, was sweet on Cassandra, but she was uncomfortable with his devotion to her. I still have the impression that she thought he was beneath her in social status, although she and her family were dependent on him, as he was the only one who knew how to work and make money. I have never liked this aspect of Cassandra. 2) Stephen worked and saved to buy Cassandra a wireless. She appreciated the gift, somewhat, until Simon gave her a fancier model that included a gramophone (no hardship for Simon). Now whose was the greater gift? It's so poignant and realistic, I'm afraid, and I'm not proud of Cassandra's reaction. Mortmain irked me, too, for being so lazy and languishing with his writer's block. But I think Cassandra's sister, Rose, annoyed me even more: she was so self-conscious, pretentious, and "willing to sacrifice" herself -- for the good of her family -- by marrying Simon. But in the end she was too self-centered, which I suppose was a good thing, in a way.

Sushipup1 -- as far as I know, everyone is eligible for a supplemental plan, but if they don't sign up when they first become eligible for Medicare (or, as in my case, after an allowed deferral ), they might have to qualify for the coverage -- just as a person can be denied life insurance for existing conditions. But, also as far as I understand, during the open enrollment period this year your friend could sign up for a supplemental plan. Now, as for what the ENT charged.... A provider is a Medicare participating provider if they agree to charge only the Medicare-approved fee for all services (they write off the amount Medicare doesn't cover). The patient pays the 20% of that approved fee that Medicare doesn't pay. A nonparticipating provider is one who sees Medicare patients and sends a bill to Medicare, but does not accept the Medicare-approved fee as the full fee for the service provided. The provider can charge the patient up to Medicare's limiting charge. Medicare lowers its approved fee by 5% for nonparticipating providers. In other words, the approved fee for a nonparticipating provider will be 95% of the approved fee for a participating provider. Then, the nonparticipating provider can charge the patient 115% of the lowered (95%) fee. If you do the math, it works out to the nonparticipating provider's fee being 109.25% -- that is, the maximum you can be charged by a nonparticipating provider is 9.25% more than Medicare's approved fee. There is a third type of provider -- one who doesn't get involved with Medicare at all. They don't submit a bill to Medicare and won't accept any fee limitations by Medicare. They reject Medicare. They will see patients who are on Medicare, but only after the patient signs a contract stating that they understand these terms and agree to pay the provider's full fee themselves. However, that provider must inform you if the service to be provided would be covered by Medicare if rendered by a provider who sees Medicare patients. So, either the ENT is a participating provider who violated Medicare's rules and charged more than the limiting fee (in which case he should be reported to Medicare), or else your friend signed a contract to be seen by a provider who rejects Medicare and she agreed to pay his entire fee. But, yeah, if she can't afford it, she can't afford it. Because her only income is SS which cannot be garnished, she is what is referred to as "judgment proof."

I always shred anything with a bar code on it. My sis once had a seed catalog mailed to me, there was a typo in the address and the same typo was a lot of junk mail I started to get after that. I called the seed catalog company and asked if they sold their customers address. She said, "No, we rent them out". I asked her when will I start getting my rent money. LOL

By the time anything comes to your house, if the address will be sold, it already has been sold.

If it makes you feel safer to shred junk mail, then do it. But it won't make a difference in the amount. I do rip apart application forms, but other than that, I just toss.

They already know your address.

I don't let those things annoy me;they are just par for the course. There is nothing personal about them.

I do wonder why I keep getting mail from COMCAST that says on the outside of the envelope, For current customers, since I canceled them 5-6 months ago. Also from Bank of America I get a checkbook each month. Closed out all my accounts there a year or so ago. Maybe if they stopped spending money on junk they could pay a tad more interest to their customers.

There is a way to stop junk from coming to your home. There used to be 6 mailing lists and I contacted each of them and requested to be taken off the lists. The last time I did that It was just a click on the computer. You might try googling stop junk mail. There was another one you had to write and pay a dollar, since I did that I don't get the financial snail mail anymore. Sorry i don't have the addresses. Very little junk mail comes to my. When it does it just says resident.

AARP does a lot of fundraising for itself. They've been mailing me for a lot of years (and I'm still not retired). I wouldn't send them a dime. I haven't seen them do anything for anyone except beg for money and taking advantage of the elderly is heinous in my opinion.

All their junk mail (since it's all junk) goes into the recycle bin. Doesn't even come into the house.

I fold up their junk mail, put it in their pre-paid envelope and mail it back to them. We have to get them in their wallets. I stopped receiving mailings, once I did so.

I throw out everything I get from AARP (CCRRAARPP). They used to send me their magazine, which I found interesting enough to read first, then throw out.

Hi Marie,

On the off chance that you might be feeling a tad ornery, still ...

... you might send their envelope with the message about your not having replied to their earlier messages back to them, with, "Well ... it looks as though I'm replying to this one, doesn't it?", written in magic marker just below that message. And enclose the rest of the propaganda, of course.
