Storage ottoman - tray top or hinged?

I want to buy one of those little square storage ottomans for the foyer entrance to my apartment - I'm thinking I can throw my bag down on it when I come in (instead of throwing it on the dining table ;-)), and I can always use the extra storage. In addition, I might occasionally move it into the living room for extra seating when I have company.

For a pop of color, I've decided to go with red leather. Overstock has one with a flip-top tray (very similar to the one in Crate & Barrel), and another with a hinged lid. The flip-top tray one is 19" square, but probably loses a bit of surface space due to the way the lid is constructed; the hinged one is 18" square but you get the entire surface.

I know I'm totally insane for obsessing about which one to get (you could say I've become "unhinged" ;-)), but I was hoping my good friends here on GW who maybe approach my level of obsessiveness could help me debate the advantages & disadvantages of flip tops vs. hinges.

Thanks in advance for your help & sympathy!
