When does he go to bed?? The feeding schedule sounds about right, unless you're going to bed at about 8:30. You want him to have enough time to go to the bathroom before going to sleep.

Same deal with the water, take it up with enough time for him to go outside at least once before bed so he's not going to bed with a full bladder.

Some dogs will vomit up yellow bile if they haven't eaten for too long, 12 hours MAY be too long for his age, although probably fine. If he does vomit bile in the morning - try bumping his last feeding up a little bit to see if that helps - or you could also move the morning feed back a bit, if it's feasible.

Also if you do notice bile - you could save a small portion of his dinner, to give to him at bed time. If that's allowed. Usually they only need a little nibble to keep their tummy settled through the night.

Well, I really get up early - around 6am - so I can feed him earlier. But I can certainly give him a snack at night before we go to sleep, which is about 10pm (I know, I'm pathetic).

Also: he is 8 weeks old, so I will be up and out with him through the night.

So remove water one hour? two hours? after feeding?

I always fed Pip right away on getting up as soon as he'd done his business outside. Fed him a cup every few hours, no schedule and boy could he eat. I've never heard of only feeding a pup 3 times a day? Sounds odd to me, pups need to eat an enormous amount of food.

It's actually often recommended to feed pups 3 times a day, and then cut it back to two as an adult. I've only ever fed pups 3 times a day. Funny how different people learn completely different things!

Elly, I would take the water up about an hour before bedtime. If you find he crashes for the night before you go to bed, you can take it up about an hour before that. As long as he gets a chance to go to the bathroom a little while after, he should be fine.

Of course, it's all trial and error, too. You may find you need to take it up sooner, or that it makes no difference when you take his water up. You'll get it figured out!

Same with the food, you'll figure out what works best pretty quickly!

I have to train him with a gentle leader, and I cannot let him off leash because I do not have a fenced in yard. But I have many friends with fenced in yards, and I got a flexilead, just to let him run in the yard. I plan to use it.

Our 'pup' is a lab and almost a year old now, but we will continue with the Large Breed Puppy Chow for another 6 months. We feed her at around 7:00, 12:00 and 5:00 but don't stick too closely to the schedule. If she seems hungry earlier, we feed her. Also, for several months, she didn't eat her morning feeding until around 10:00 -- just didn't seem hungry yet.

Now, she can't wait to eat whenever we feed her, so we have increased her food to 1 1/2 c. per feeding. You just have to watch and adjust accordingly. Our dog is extremely high energy and we worry about the 'bloat' thing, so will probably continue feeding three times a day.
