Fireplace Mantel Help!
Comments (2)Sounds very familiar. We did the same recessed paneling, crown molding, self designed thing, although the carpenter who was building out the wall built it. I agree with ventupete. Do a mock up. Generally speaking, the fireplaces that I find most attractive have the top plate no narrower (top to bottom) than the legs are wide. Same with the surround. Two suggestions. Think hard about the size of the crown molding you will use. We used the molding we used on the wall. I thought it would tie it together. I now believe it is too large for the overall size of the fireplace. Second, I wish we had run a bead across the bottom of the top plate and continuing across the legs, as is usually done with the panelled approach. I thought I was being cool. I now think it looks slightly unbalanced and unfinished. If it sounds as if I don't like what we have, that's not true, but it could have been better. Good luck...See MoreCan you help me find a thread about a fireplace mantel?
Comments (2)I don't remember who or where either. But here is an image from alexmoulding.com site that looks the way I want my fireplace to look. And if you run to your Lowes or Home Depot or good magazine store and pick up the May 2010 issue of Remodel magazine, a Better homes & gardens mag, there is a fabulous fireplace in a lovely blue living room, in a California cottage remodel. I showed it to my boss and she wants it too. It's only on the newstands for another week so hurry up! Red...See MorePlease help me choose living room furniture, mantel & accents!!!
Comments (8)Your idea about the mantel is spot on ! I think your new rug is nice, but....(sorry), I feel like you dont need a rug in here or you need something lighter, smaller possibly even a free form like faux bear or even round. the space is so small the rug is closing you in. recliners will eat up a lot of space here........ you will have to forgo the coffee table I suspect. have you toyed with the idea of an ottoman instead, especially since if you are reclined you dont really face the tv so it might not be as awesome lol. You could do a reclining chair and sofa with an ottoman, might get more function out of that. Leather sofas really only have so many looks, so I would argee that gray is not really great I would lean toward beige if it was me. might I also toss out there the light bulb you have shining on the fireplace is a bit to daylight for my taste and also seems to be very bright! I think diming it down, narrowing the beam spread might high light the art better, its a bit washed out right now. https://www.costco.com/campania-leather-power-reclining-sofa-with-power-headrests.product.100390699.html https://www.macys.com/shop/product/kaleb-tufted-leather-sofa-collection-created-for-macys?ID=2672877...See MoreMCM fireplace- keep or change?
Comments (14)If this is a modest ranch house I would keep it and I don't think I would paint any of the masonry. Are you sure the top is not a piece of cast stone or limestone? I actually changed my 1965 hearth from slate tile (not as nice as yours) into a solid piece of soapstone identical in shape because the old hearth was cracked. That would take away one pattern of your FP which may help. But overall I think it's charming and well suited to the house. I have a feeling your house is not really MCM so much as it is some sort of "minimal" style with modern or moderne touches. (Minimal Traditional is a style of the period, I think there should be a Minimal Moderne category as well). You don't want to do anything too polished here, unless you are reworking the entire interior to some higher level of finish --not that I would recommend that. I picture your house being something more or less like this:...See Moresarschlos_remodeler
