Paraffin Wax............

Does anyone know where you can purchase Paraffin Wax, this time of year? I can not find it in the grocery stores. Thank you !!! Diana55

The craft store (Hobby Lobby) always has it but I don't know if it's food safe.

Hey, I am not sure about the wax, but my neighbor at my old house had a problem where squirrels would get the bulbs... until they put a cake pan out back with walnuts in it... luckily, we had about 10 walnut trees between the two of us, so they never had to buy any... but I think they buy squirrel feed (or you can use an off brand of cherrios... the wheat ones sometimes) ... most of the time if it's right there for them, they go for that instead of hunting for others. Heck, my dad and I got a squirrel in our back yard so used to us feeding it that (100% honest) it would come to the slider in the family room and look around and when we'd go out there we could have food in the palm of our hand and it would eat out of it... really neat. Anyways though, if you don't want to risk the wax, you could try going to a bird store to get some food for squirrels... and while there, ask them if they have anything that will deter squirrels from bulbs. Edible parafin wax for chocolate making?

I can't imagine eating paraffin wax, edible or not! We are lucky in Australia to have a product called Copha, which we use for making chocolate and other confectionery, especially Chocolate Crackles and White Christmas. You might be able to order some online. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copha I've done some Googling, and found this information: There is a product in America called Palmin, which is supposed to be the same as Copha. It comes in a 250g block. You should be able to get it from Dittmer's Gourmet Meats and Wursthaus at 400 San Antonio Road, Mountain View, CA. I've also learned that you will be sadly disappointed if you try substituting Crisco for Copha, so don't be tempted!

Renee, you're right, this sounds unholy. So I'll have to include them in my Christmas packages this year. I have Bourbon, it's not Woodford, but that won't stop me. In regards to paraffin, it is edible. And, in spite of the fact it was approved by the FDA ;-Ã, the body does not absorb wax. But it is still being used today, in all types of chocolates. Besides, our grandmothers never keeled over from using this product. But, if you don't have paraffin in your pantry, get your hands on some Paramount Crystals, which works very well, and it's popular among candy makers. Ok, I confess. The latter (Paramount Crystals) is really just shortening, in flake form. But, unlike vegetable shortening in a can, the flakes have an eternal shelf life. You should check out WalMart, Michaels, or HobbyLobby for your supplies. They all carry parrifin, soy and gel wax. Reasonable prices. You can also buy a set of everything you will need in one box. It has the jars, scents, wicks, wax, everything in one box. If you have a JoAnn Fabrics nearby, they carry candle supplies also. As for how much wax you will need for the ice candles, I would say probably around 10#. Hope this is helpful.

Hardware stores also carry Gulf Wax boxed here, if you don't need alot of it. It's probably cheaper than hobby/craft stores.
Wax went out thru the roof last year and remains due to the high oil prices.
The big blocks I used to get for 15.00 were 39.00 last year!
Needless to say, I made less firestarters.
Another option is if your grocery store has a Jewish section I picked up a 3lb box of Sabbos Candles, 100% Parafin Wax. 50 cents
Btw, if you are using this to seal jams/jellies it is not recommended as safe anymore. Years ago I would put jelly in glass custard cups, seal with wax, wrap up with cello wrap for gift baskets. I mainly make low-sugar jams/jellies now and no way would I use wax to seal, plus a case of 4oz canning jars are less expensive

It's not for canning, but for a friend of mine. She wants it for a Science project, her daughter has to do. I asked you guy's on the Forum, because you know everything !!! LOL Thanks Again !!! Diana55

We have a local honey and candle supplier that sells beeswax and paraffin in huge blocks. Maybe you have someone like that? Or a candlemaker maybe? Sorry I'm not very helpful, our stores have it in the canning section year round too.
