Dogs pressing up against you

One of mine presses up against me when I pet him. He'll stand sideways with his head looking out and away from me. He'll have a slow wag going. I remember he did this when I first met him at the shelter. I haven't read anything about this firm pressing up and wondered what it means and if it's more common with some breeds than others.

Both mine do that. They kind of press their back half against our legs and look away. Big guy will nearly knock you over he presses so hard some times, if he's really enjoying the pets, or you're not petting him enough. With ours I think its cause they like their back ends rubbed, so they push them against us.

All of my dogs do the press. I think it means they love me and want to be touching. In fact, every dog I know does it. My youngest not only does the press when he's being petted, he finds a seat next to my chair and presses up against me either sitting up or lying down. Also, I find that my three always are touching when they are lying down sleeping.

A few weekends ago I had a visiting golden and my office was a sea of attached retriever bodies each nite. Apparently, even visitors are included:)). It was wonderful to watch how they connect.

This made me wonder about secret compartments in general. Found a fascinating article on it. Even for expert's it's tricky finding the. I'm not going off on a tangent ;) The reason I posted all that is because since Linda C keeps asking I've been staring at the center. DH is a hobby woodworker and has made some furniture pieces so I've been able to see the process from the ground up. That is a funky situation there. If there is nothing in the space between the top and bottom, it's just a dead pocket of air that would really serve no purpose. (It doesn't make sense that it would be put there for support.) So maybe there is something hidden in there!

who would tie a dog up at an apartment?

I used to rent a house next to another rental and they would put their dog on a tie in our back field. All the homes had a huge shared field. The dog was a rotty and I would have been nervous if it were running around the field. The owners walked him 2x a day. In the morning and afternoon he would be tied outside while they grilled or waited for the school bus. He would be him suning himself outside happily. He wouldn't have been able to do that if he wasn't tied out. Now on the other side of me was a lab owner who let their dog roam the field whenever it wanted. This dog almost bit me because he thought that the entire field was his back yard. letting your dog roam around an unfenced area is most lazy of all! It made me mad the other day also, that we were at a park and some family brought their unleashed dog and let it run around. We had our two dogs, on leashes, and had to turn around. Sorry, I don't trust YOUR stupid dog not to hurt my dogs. UGH! I agree that if they are just tieing the dog out without walking it that is sad, however if they are spending time outdoors with their family and want their dog to join them then it needs to be either tied or on a leash. We have to put out a tie out for our dogs at my MIL house like that. She doesn't have a fence and there is a busy road nearby. In this case keeping your dog tied up is responsible to do! When the apt complex decided to mow, they will find the tie out. I would wait to see what happens after that.

I'm starting to worry about my dog..acting up?

We feed her twice a day like the vet recommended. She's not deaf, she'll look at wear the sound is coming from, but won't respond, like she's ignoring us, or trying to. The other dog actually calmed her anxiety, she's a jealous dog, that can be sneaky though, which I forgot to inform you guys about (sorry, i was sort of panicking.) When she was a puppy we couldn't leave her a cage, that was around x5's bigger then her in the first place, because she had anxiety issues and would scratch her head against the side until it bled. So we got her a brother, and everything changed and she's really nice now. But Chester, Sophies "brother", is a soft-coated wheaten terrier, we've already took him to around 4 different trainers, I guess it's just his instincts preventing him changing into a nicer, calmer, relaxed, less dirty dog. ( We wash/groom him, but he loves going outdoors..so.ha.) And yes, we are feeding her a quality dog food that you can only buy at certain pet stores, not PetCo/PetSmart. Do they do blood work when dogs go into surgery? I know it may sound silly, but I'm sure if she's already gotten blood work done for all that. She had surgery earlier this summer for skin-tags, and cracked teeth, in multiple areas for the skin-tags. I really hope it's nothing more then old age, if there's cancer, It would really crush me. She's one of the prettiest weimaraners ever, well, not to be conceited, but she really is a pretty one. Oh, and she's kind of getting more paranoid in a sense. Getting scared really easily, I don't know why! We treat our dogs with respect like their our family, which they are, and there's no pet-abuse in the family either. (Never ever ever will that happen!)

There's signs all over the park here that say "It's your doodie!" (verbatim) and mentions the fines if you don't do your duty and pick up the doodie. So I guess what it boils down to is you are in Canada and I am not thus you will not have dogpiles and I will. And that's the way it is. And you have healthcare and I don't. And that's the way it is. And you have some other policies and laws I would pay to have but alas, I don't because I'm in the USA. And that's the way it is. So enjoy it. Just enjoy all your cleanliness and lack of trash and hypodermic needles in the streets and robberies and driveby shootings and your standardized use of the metric system and your legal 4 GPF toilets and all the import albums that I can not get here for any amount of money and just romp around in all the pretty snow. Not fair about the snow situation either. Freaking freezing outside here but do we get snow? Noooo. Phew I feel better now thanks. Happy holidays!

All 3 of my dogs do that (lab, saint, and hound), but especially my hound and saint. I've always just thought it was their way of showing affection towards me, but I'm not sure.

All three of mine sleep touching each other. The little one does the press up against the legs, for a while I thought she thought she was a cat!

Ok I didn't realize so many did it. Thanks for replying. I figured while it seems nice to think it was for affection purposes I assumed it was actually something like access control similar to sitting in the middle of a hallway or doorway something like that.

Capone is pretty submissive and does what I call 'the lean.' It seems sweet, but we don't encourage it simply b/c he's too big to lean on me (5'2", 115lb) and it really hurts my knees!

I have a springer spaniel, and they are known to 'lean', which he does, and the more relaxed he is, the more he leans. I think most of the sporting dogs are known to exhibit the leaning behavior. I seem to see it more in breeds that are bred to work closely with humans, such as sporting breeds and hounds.

Our standard poodle is a leaner. He also likes to get up on the bed and lie with his back pressed up against my read end, but not with DH or the other dogs. (Of course mine is more what you'd call comfortable. . .)
