This is an ad for Cottolene (a Crisco-like product) from a 1903 Ladies' Home Journal. I thought it was a stitch. A little more history is at the link below.

Very interesting!
I used lard tonight to fry some potatoes.....love the taste but maybe Cottolene would have been better. LOL

I use plastic tree wraps. They are inexpensive if you order them from a nursery supplier like A.M. Lenoard. But they can be very pricey if you get them from a local nursery. I puchased a bunch from A.M. Leonard for something like .35 each the nursery in town wanted $7.00 each. Some mark-up! Anyhow - buy more than you need because they last only a season or two and the plastic gets brittle. Sometimes you need two if your trees are larger in diamiter to get good coverage up higher. I use them every winter to keep my trees safe from the rabbits. Though come spring they dont seem to bother them as much once the grass greens up for them to chew on.

I watched the planet series on discovery last night. They had lizards on the desert program they were not bad to look at. Anyways wanted to share my suet recipe cheaper to make than buy it. My property is called woodpecker acres for a reason. the woodpeckers love this suet....Save your plastic containers you buy your suet in. Just wash them up. You will need approximately 6-8 containers. 1 Lb lard 1 small jar peanut butter get it at aldis cheaper 2 cups oatmeal 2 cups flour 2 cups corn meal Melt lard and peanut butter in microwave. Add rest of the ingrediants and mix away. Place mixture into suet containers and keep frozen. I place chunks of suet pieces outside. I have something coming in at night eating the suet. If I put the whole block out it would be gone the nest morning. So I break it into chumks last longer that way. You can add anything else you like nuts berrys so forth. This is not an exact recipe. I dont even measure anymore. Alittle of this and a little of that. they love it... Well gotta go dig more plants up. Barb

Yum.. All these posts are making me hungry! Caryscot... I just posted a link to the vodka pie crust recipe on the Thanksgiving thread for Oldbat2be. Anyone interested can call a butcher shop and ask them to save you the leaf fat. I understand that's the best to use for rendering. Good lard from well raised hogs is sooo much better than all this vegetable oil. I've read where canola and corn oil and such go rancid AS you are digesting (or trying to anyway) them. That is if they aren't already rancid by the time you use them. They are polyunsaturated and very unstable. Lard, coconut oil, tallow, palm shortening... very stable, long shelf life and full of nutrients. The veil is starting to be pulled back on the processed food industry and it's 'phude' products. Long overdue, IMO. Glad to see all the real food people on GW!

And round and round it goes! You can also look at the "Similar Items" below sam_md's ebay link and see that nearly every one is being called a sausage AND fruit AND lard press, etc. On the other hand, do a search for "fruit press" and you will find that at least 75 percent of the fruit presses pictured are made primarily of wood and tend to be much larger.You can use it to press anything, but as lindac92 and lazy_gardens said above it would be pretty slow for cider. That said, here is a picture of it beside my foot, for scale. I wear a size 13 which, as luck would have it, makes my shoes precisely one foot long. There may be some depth perception issues with this photo, but my shoe is actually touching the backside of the arch reading "Enterprise."

I have an old cookbook with an ad for Cottolene in the back. I wonder how long ago they stopped making it?
Anyone remember Spry? I think it was like Cottolene but with lard rather than suet.

I remember Spry from when I was a little kid. But it wasn't made with lard--it was vegetable shortening, like Crisco. They were the two dominant brands, and then Spry just disappeared.

I thought Crisco was the only one that was pure vegetable shortening....because I seem to remember my Jewish friends couldn't eat stuff made with spry

I remember Spry, used it a lot.
But don't know that I ever read its ingredient label.
Spry was advertised as being 'pure vegetable shortening'.
Don't know the why's & wherefore's of Jewish diet, so don't know why they couldn't/wouldn't eat it.

My grandmother was Orthodox and kept a kosher house, and she used Spry. (She was always a little suspicious of Crisco for some reason. Must've been the name.) You must be thinking of some other product your friends couldn't eat, Linda.

I love this ad. What a fascinating look into a time and a place. I Love the seemingly Random mid-sentence Capitalization, and the over-dramatic phrasing. The Way of the Transgressor is Lard, indeed! Very memorable.

I love those old ads. It's ironic that today lard is recognized as surprisingly healthy and shortening is castigated.
