Oh, that story gave me a good laugh. What an ornery little dog you have there. Reminds me of my old lab I used to have. One of her funniest little escapades was similar to yours last night. DH and I were watching tv, I had 2 slices of bread with mayo spread on them. We heard loud noise from out back, ran to back door and walked around outside to investigate (in my haste I left the bread in family room). Our lab came with us as far as the back door, and then stood there watching us with a very concerned look on her face the entire time we were investigating the noise. Or so I thought, until I found one of my slices of mayonaise bread missing and a teeny tiny bit of mayo still on the side of her mouth. Little turkies, aren't they.

I had been used to my Megan, a perfectly behaved lab mix who would not do anything wrong - she even asked before jumping on the couch. Then we adopted Toby. One day, I had stopped for take-out before coming home. The dogs went out and I opened my lunch up and started getting ready to eat, when the dogs asked to come back in. I set my lunch on the footstool and went to let them in the back door.

As I was wiping Megan's feet, it dawned on me that Toby was nowhere in sight. I raced back to the living room to see him eating my lunch! It just had not occurred to me to put it out of his reach. How could I be mad at a Beagle mix taking advantage of my mistake?

Onion dip, licorice and beef jerky? Sounds like you need to clean up your diet for your puppies sake. lmao. Good luck. Our Abby is just now getting high enough to reach her nose over the edge of the table.

I have a 8 year old beagle and he has not outgrown his issues. He was less than a year old when he swallowed my panty hose. Yes he did pass them...no help from a vet. He has swallowed mens dress socks. I can count 2 in my head right now. He mananged to inhale his grandma's large panty. He would of swallowed a matching bra if he could of got a chance. My mom took him to the vet at that time and I wasted 300.00 for them to take a X-ray on his stomach. He passed it finally 7 days later. I have learned that I will not run to the vet everytime. He always passes it. He also got a hold of super large tub of vasaline and licked it completly dry. His fur near his bottom was very greasy for days. Now that was a funny sight.
Today if you try to grab from him he WILL not give up. Both my husband and my mom have been bitten really bad. My mom with to the emergency room. Yes I still have him in our lives. We have no kids and yes Beagle 's can be aggressive. Just like all dogs. As a owner you know your limits. Don't let their big brown eyes fool you ! My do all the time! Oh one more thing he tried to inhale...lantana. A very very toxic plant to dogs. He managed to overcome this as well.

We have learned today that baby gates are everywhere..no eating near low areas. Kids need to hold food high and well as us too. That Beagles are sneaky and quick and that their nose gets them in trouble.

Beagles can behave better...this is my fault at times. but I lived with him for almost 9 years. I would own another Beagle. But I will have 2 next time. Beagles do much better in pairs or groups. They are pack dogs.

Your stories are all so funny. Issues. . .I guess that's a good name for what might possibly motivate some of our four-legged children.
My 11 year old PON stole a new unwrapped bar of Dove soap and expected me make a big deal of it. When I ignored him he ate half of it. The joke was on him. . . and 9 hours later it was on ME! No, soap doesn't make a vomit spot any easier to clean, especially when it also includes his normal diet supplement: mulch and dirt.

Lorie, maybe it's big guys way of saying mom and dad don't need anymore treats? LOL. His old body can probably tolerate the junk more than ours can, he never puts on weight. The worst part though, is that I have been somewhat dieting lately for an upcoming wedding I'll be in, and he's eaten my once a week snacks 3 weeks in a row now! I guess I'm just not allowed to cheat even once a week.

New_blue, it's funny. My beagle seems lately to be much better behaved food wise, than the big boxer-pit mix.

Although, to list a lot of the things the beagle has eaten:

The corner of my deck.
The corner of my coffee table.
Numerous pairs of underwear between me and my old roommate.
My carpet. I have a perfect circle chewed out of my landing.
She got into the grass clippings and ate so much she had to have xrays and enimas, last summer.
She chews her blanket and swallows huge chunks of it, then ralphs them back up if we don't give her a chew toy.
Tonnes of cat toys.
And some more embarassing things I don't care to mention, but can say thank god they passed without the help of a vet, lol.

I had a beagle that used to swallow anything she could find. Balloons (deflated), used kleenex, underpants,a hand towel. Everything passed naturally. . We used to walk in the back yard and look at the dog droppings with kleenex in them. She once ate my mother's Whitman sampler. They say chocolate is poisonous to dogs. None of this killed her. She died of a stroke at age 17.

We had a beagle dalmation mix that lived for pastry and chocolates. She ate a big pan of chocolate covered dumplings, chocolate pie and countless candy bars and pastries. She never gained an ounce either! She never even had as much of a burp much less a near death experience from her escapades.
Munko's, it sounds like he is your best diet buddy! lol However if it persists I think I can imagine it getting ugly.. very ugly for him. lmao

What is it with beagles being such thieves? Our beagle-basset will steal the bread from a sandwich. She leaves the meat on the plate, she just wants the bread. Thanks for making me smile today.

Well, I have a stealing food story, but not Beagle story. Before I got my first apartment last year, I had some roomates that had a mut they found on the side of the street. A big brown dog named Barney. I had only been living there a couple months and decided to make some lemon bars. I bought the ingredients, picked out a recipe and made the bars. I sliced the bars up and arranged them on a platter. I put them in the butcher block in the middle of the kitchen and ran in the next room to answer the phone. I came back a minute or two later and all the lemon bars were gone except one. There sat one lonely lemon bar in the middle of the platter. It was a little soggy, but still completely there. I asked the only other person home at that time if he'd seen the lemon bars. He told me that he hadn't stepped out of the computer room all morning. I stormed back in the kitchen with my hands on my hips wagging a finger... sure enough, Barney came out from under the dining table licking a yellow crumb off his lips. As soon as he made eye contact with me, he ran under the bed and didn't come out for 20 minutes. What a polite doggy to leave ONE lemon bar for the person who made them. Have you ever seen such manners? I laugh now, but I was upset then. I went to all the trouble of making the lemon bars, had to clean the kitchen up afterwards and didn't get any reward from it!

There was one thing today that my Sammy did not eat...a raw potato. Now that was amazing!

Anytime I leave food within reach of a dog,it's my fault if it gets eaten. No matter how "good" a dog is, you can't train one to ignore a tasty treat.

I second that, Jannie. I have an oversized min pin (20 lbs.) who has always been obsessed with food. When he was just a few months old, my kids and I had just sat down to dinner when someone knocked at our door. I went to answer it and since it was a family friend, the kids soon ran in, too. When we returned to our meal minutes later, my dog was standing in the middle of the dining room table chowing down on our food.

Now at the age of 12 1/2 he's still up to the same tricks. Just a couple of weeks ago, I set my lunch on the table and turned away briefly to get something. I turned back just in time to see him stand up and snatch the top bun off my sandwich. No amount of discipline has ever been able to persuade him to stop. The reward for stealing just outweighs everything else.

this thread reminds me of something I saw a few years ago on Funniest Home Videos. . . "mom" was being filmed making Thanksgiving dinner for her family and some company that had arrived. She got pre occupied, turned her back, & family dog jumped up, grabbed the turkey that had just been removed from oven a few minutes prior. She didn't see him, turned back, said 'where's the turkey?' and then took off after 'fido' into the back yard. He hadn't dragged it too far, and she yanked it out of his mouth. She frantically rinsed it quickly, dried it & stuck parsely in the tooth holes. She left the kitchen, and told the person with camera, 'dont you dare say anything to anyone! This turkey is perfectly fine! ' LOL!

My Casey Jones is a Dalmatian (or English setter)/hound mix. His attitude is, "Oh, I see you don't want that right now. I guess I'll take it off your hands!" He does understand "That's MINE!" and respects it - as long as I don't turn my head!

I don't get much of a chance to come here regularly, but this thread cracks me up!

I guess I'm relieved my dog isn't the only food thief in the world. Belle is a "chow hound" (and I don't mean the Chow-Chow breed...LOL)

A list of the things she has eaten just this past week:

2 dirty, disgusting, smelly socks (my son's...)
1 pair panties
cigarette butt (found at the park, we don't smoke)
goose poop (how gross is this!? ... again, at the park)
1 peanut butter egg
marshmallow peep (both this and the egg stolen off a high kitchen counter)
used napkins, paper towels, kleenex (she is a klepto with these, we have to hide every single box in closet or drawer. She will do anything to get to the tissues.)
She will eat her breakfast and circle the rest of us like a turkey vulture, just waiting for a crumb to drop or for one of us to turn our heads! Then she pounces and runs off with her prize! We're still working and training every day on her "thieving ways" and most of the time, if I can say "Leave it" before she gets her jaws around it, I can retrieve the object. If she gets it in her mouth, forget it. Swallowed instantly, without even chewing.

On the plus side, medicating her is a breeze. She had to take a round of antibiotics a while back. The vet's assistant was going into a lengthy discussion on the best way to get her to swallow a pill. I replied, "OH no problem, watch this. Here Belle, CATCH!" GULP!! Swallowed right down, never bothered to taste. Thankfully, the entire episode was the same. She will literally eat ANYTHING!

You've just got to love them:) Thanks for making me laugh.

(Oh and by the way, the socks and panties did, eventually, pass through. I believe she has a stomach made of the proverbial cast iron!)

I always wonder, with all the things our dogs eat that we see, what have they eaten that we don't see?? The other day Coda came barreling in from outside with a mouthful of something, I told her drop it, and out came atleast 10 unshelled peanuts. I have no idea where they came from! We do eat peanuts, but where she came from with her moutful (she took a while, so I know she was over there stuffing her face) wouldn't make sense as it's nowhere near the gate where the garbage goes out. And with the boyfriend around, no peanut shell leaves this house with peanuts still in it, lol.

Last week, she came barreling in again, with a half eaten peach. We don't eat peaches.

Just makes me wonder what else she's found and eaten before I've caught it.

lol Boots the dalmation / beagle mix was a runner. Every chance she had she would shove past the kids and run down the street and there was no catching her. The first thing we would do to get her home was run and get a loaf of bread and the car keys. I would open the back windows of the car and the drivers side window and drive around the block till I spotted her and hang the loaf of bread out the window and wave it around. Boots would make a beeline for the car and jump through the open window. The old neighbors still laugh and tease us about that.

Lostnca, your post reminds me of my hound. She is normally never let off the leash, as she is not trustworthy and will run like crazy to who knows where, but the few times she has managed to sneak her way out the door, I always have to lure her back in with food. Her latest crave is carrots, so I always keep a bag of carrots on hand, just in case.

I had a house guest for a few days who, unbeknown to me, had brought with him a zip lock bag of "funny" brownies. He left it sitting next to his suitcase within reach of my, thankfully, very large Yellow Lab (110 pounds). We came home to bits of empty baggy around the bedroom. She seemed none the worse for the experience, thank goodness. It didn't seem to phase her a bit! I researched the toxicity factor and it seems the chocolate probably poses a larger risk.
