Worst kitchen ever Help

Please advise. I thought I was through with the floor plan with the sink dsh and freestanding range along one wall but everyone I show it to says lining up the appliances will look terrible. So changing that idea, I am finding it necessary to put the sink and freestanding range on one wall and the dishwasher to the left of the sink at the L counter (90'). What do you think the minimum space I would need to stand at the sink and open the dishwasher comfortably from the sink corner to thebeginning of dishwasher which would open behind me? I am limited and will be giving up precious dining room space. I could make the countertop across the room less than the normal 24" as it is on the opposite wall and move the dishwasher down a few more inches or the L wall can go into the dining room another foot. It would be most helpful if you could post a floor plan of some sort.

My first impression: function over form. I can't imagine having a dishwasher in such an awkward position. Stick with your original plan and don't worry about the looks. You could always consider a paneled dishwasher so that it blends in woth your cabinets.

If you are worried about the looks of range and dishwasher, both metal, on the same wall, you could buy a dishwasher that accepts a panel and camouflage it with a cabinet front. In a previous house I had a set-up with sink and dishwasher at 90 degrees, and I disliked it. It was very awkward. Can't tell you how many inches there were, though.

Okay, late to the party, been a lurker for way too long! All good suggestions. But to add: Aloe,the best thing out there, no doubt, but in between or if you don't have enough of the fresh plant use a lotion with aloe and lidacaine. Do watch for any allergic reaction. It will sooth the pain and add hydration to the skin. Hydration is the key! Both internal and topical! Drink Drink Drink Lots of water inside and out. Feed the skin with the lotions when not fresh aloe. Dried out skin is just as painful and the cracks are bacteria traps waiting to happen. Everyone and I MEAN EVERYONE! Needs Foille Ointment in their medicine chest. I had a severe grease burn once and only I can make out where the outline of what would've been a nasty scar would be. It may actually burn at first when you put it on, be strong, it is the vaseline base reflecting the heat of the burn. Then it will cool and it will speed the healing. Be careful of Triple antibiotics like Neosporin. They contain nickel. If you can't wear cheap earrings you may also have a reaction to this ointment. Look for Bacitracin instead, just as effective. Or Bactroban (anti MRSA/ORSA) but you need a script for that one. I feel your pain! I have Polish/English/Irish/Scottish in my heritage and can burn from a long stare! LOL And BTW, while home and slathering on the goop, wear very oversize white cotton T's inside out. Don't even risk those seams rubbing (same goes for the legs, pj's or lounge pants but inside out). Yes, it certainly could be the rainy weather all the east coast has been having. If your soil doesn't have a chance to drain but is continually filled with water, the plant roots begin to suffocate. I'm still picking green and wax beans, but the lower leaves really look tacky, yellowing and dessicated. The tops are still green and healthy, so I guess they'll keep producing unless the bottom of the plants die. As for helping them, I'd let them be for a while. See what happens. If you have sandy soil, the original fertilization gets carried down as the rain drains into the subsoil, so when things have stabilized, I'd add a small amount of a balanced fertilizer to see if that's useful. Or your plants may perk up without additional fertilizer.

Many of you have had some interesting jobs! I can't say I have had any job that I could even characterize as "worst." For the most part, most of my time was spent in in air conditioned buildings, I didn't get too dirty (except packing supplies and taping boxes ruined my hands and some many a pair of Hanes stockings) and the people I worked with in all of my jobs were pleasant enough with the exception of a few, but that's to be expected. Summers I worked for my dad's business while in high school and all throughout college every afternoon doing office work--filing, bookkeeping, answering the phone, filling orders and packing supplies, delivering supplies, cleaning the bathrooms--you name it, I did it. It was good, general experience and the best part was the time I spent as an adult with my Dad. I guess the most interesting job I had was working for a criminal defense attorney when I graduated from college. I had to travel to different states and hunt down some pretty questionable characters to take statements and get affidavits regarding a murder--we were defending a guy that shot a guy in the back of the head from the back seat of a car over a drug deal. I remember we all said he had "Manson Eyes." Also, I had some interaction with some dangerous people in undercover work for the federal government--illegal arms buyers, drug dealers. But I can't say it was unpleasant--I enjoyed knowing that one day these people would be going to jail for their crimes. Nope--no bad jobs--they were all good!

That is a beautiful house. They really like colors, every room is multiple colors. The kitchen is easily fixable. The sliver of Island is a hip hazard! Ouch, just no. My neighbor is redoing their house after the flood. I just went to look at the progress. They put in a super thin and long Island right in the middle of a slim long kitchen. And both of them are very large people. Once the countertops go on I don't know if they will be able to get in there. And it totally cuts the fridge off from the sink, stove and dishwasher. The fridge is on the opposite side of the room. I couldn't say anything but I thought why on earth did the cabinet company that came out to measure and determine layout let them do that. He was against it but she wanted an island. I did ask if she would consider a movable island like I have. At least she would be able to get to the fridge. She was happy with her set up. I am anxious to see it with the countertops because they are going to have a hang over for stools on one side! Crazy town!

I agree with Pbrisjar. YOU have to live with it. I also have an awkward kitchen and have no choice but to line mine up like little soldiers. But I was able to make seating space out of a L-shaped bar. Can you do something like?

Thanks for your advice. The more I thought of what you said and the dishwasher behind me the more I didn't like it. I signed on for a new kitchen today and I will have the appliances lined up but did take 9" into the DR. This allowed me to put a spice rack between the range and the dishwasher. Fingers are crossed for my new kitchen looking good. This kitchen I have now is terrible with 3" of counter space to the left of my sink and the dishwasher at the 90' can't be opened w/o moving away from the sink. No wonder Mayfair Homes is no longer...

I'm not sure this helps (post a layout!) but in my last home we had a corner sink with a dishwasher not-quite-adjacent. It was about 24" away. We also used dishdrawers which work better in tight quarters. Here's a picture of the unfinished kitchen--DW, 24" drawer cabinet, angled sink (hard to see in picture). This worked quite well, especially since the drawers load easily from the side.
