Going Digital

Am I the last person in the world using a Canon AE-1 SLR? I love the camera but the advantages of digital cannot be denied. I want to stay with the SLR and am leaning to the xTi and the XSi.

I have two nagging concerns. I have borrowed my brother-in-law's digital and the screen is very difficult to see. It has to be at exactly the right angle and out of direct light or it becomes a blank screen. Also, the colors are not true. In particular, blue is drained out of most colors. Purple becomes garish pink and lavender becomes baby pink. He tells me that he has features that will let me paint it the color I want. But I want the color it is, not the color I paint it.

Is this just because he has a very inexpensive camera or do digitals have a problem with seeing true colors?

Hi Carmellia! I can assure you that you are not the last person on earth still shooting an AE1. I am a semi-pro photographer & I used to shoot the AE1. It is a great little camera. Digital is great but you do want to stay with an SLR digital. Unless you want to stay with Canon I would suggest you look at the Nikon D80. I shoot the Nikon D70 (version B4 the D80)& I love it. My son (also a photographer) shoots the D80 & I find that it is not only quieter but the screen on the back is larger & easier to see. Color on the Nikons are very accurate. I have had mine for 3 years with no problems. Be sure & invest in a photo printer if you do not already own one. You will want to print some of those pix you will be taking! Have fun!

The issue of supermarkets leaving inner cities has less to do with a lack of customers and more to do with the difficulty of trying to run a supermarket in inner cities. I watched stores like Lucky, Safeway, and others move out of inner city Seattle. Issues like shoplifting, vandalism and other unusual expenses made it unprofitable to attempt to continue operating in the city. I don't think civic leaders have the insight to know how to respond to the issue. Decades of suburban development has created habits of thought and policy that create the problems they're now experiencing. Zoning restrictions prevent neighborhood food stores from setting up shop in the midst of their customers. Instead, commercial activity is limited to the major thoroughfares, farther away from customers. To my mind, convenience stores should be eliminated from neighborhoods and prevented from selling edible goods. We don't allow sexual pornography to exist in neighborhoods, why do we allow food porn?

Carmellia, I'm Canon all the way. I have one of the S series that joyfulsnowflake mentioned. Mine is the S5 IS and I've had it since the firt of the year. It takes absolutely stunning photos and is fairly reasonably priced. The only negatives are that it is 'slow' meaning if you're shooting fast moving subjects or low light you may get some pretty blurry shots. So for birds, wild animals, and fast moving kids it's just so so. For gardens and scenery it's fantastic. The other negative is that the lens cover pops off easily. I also own two Canon SLRs, both older models (D30 and 10D) and they are great cameras too, both available second hand for reasonable prices. If I were buying a new Digital SLR, I'd be looking at the Canon Rebel. I have a Rebel 35 mm and loved it. It's just a backup now as I don't use film unless forced. But the digital Rebel looks great. I know a few people who have it and they say really good things.

Around here the stations have been doing weekly "system checks" for viewers since about November. We don't get a green check ... but if our TV setup isn't digital compatable, we won't get a picture, just static and garbled sound. My only TV affected is in the basement, so we'll put a converter box down there. DH had talked about getting rid of the antenna a couple years ago, I guess we'll keep it til the 18th of Feb now to see if we need it for the sets that aren't on cable.

If you could find a shop with cnc milling the can do what you want. Just remember that this is a stamp for steel and requires a reverse image and must also be hardened and tempered. Saying that when done it should last a lifetime but the cost will reflect the complexity of the design a small shop with a like minded owner would be the answer as all the design is computer generated and once that is done programming is a cinch lots luck but just keep trying
