It is not uncommon in cats. Especially in Key West.

The 6 toed cats of Key West FLorida are supposedly related to a cat once owned by writer Ernest Hemingway. i've nevef heard of a dog with six toes but as lonmg as it doesn't hurt him, don't worry about him.

Maybe the dog is part Norwegian Lundehund? They are true polydactyl dogs with 6 fully jointed, functioning toes on each foot.

I love polydactyl cats, they always look so cool with their big front paws.

Once in my life, I have seen 6 toed cats. A stray cat had a litter of kittnes in the back building of a filling station I worked at when in high school. The boss wanted to rid his building of these cats. After the kittens were old enough, I took two home to our farm, and these kittens had several feet with 6 toes. Those kittens became members of our barn cats and they produced 6 toed kittens. I was planning to selective breed to encourage the 6 toed trait until I realized it would entail too much inbreeding. (I did not have enough gene pool to select from.)

A couple of years later, I left home and out cat population was reduced and finally extingushed when my folks began reducing their farming efforts, and finally retired and moved to town.

We had a cat with 6 toes on both front feet ,looked like he had mittens on.

Dog with six toes is called a runt.Most dog mothers try and kill that one.If someone trys to sell you a six toed dog at regular price this is wrong.They are supposed to give it away or sell at halfprice.I know because it happened to me .I brought a sixtoed poddle at full price .So happened when I took it to the vet for checkup the vet told me to get my money back or call the Akc.I told the person who sold me the pup and he gave me back my money so fast it made my head swim.Know what you are doing when you buy a pedigree.

goldy, this dog was a pound puppy. She adopted it to give it a loving forever home.
He still gives kisses and is happy to see her when she arrives home. She could care less about "pedigree" To suggest that a living thing is useless because of a slight "defect" tells me why I usually prefer animals over most people!

I had no idea mother dogs knew how to count.

I don't know about counting, as in 1,2,3,etc. but I had a mother dog that would touch each of her pups with her nose as if counting and would know if one was missing. I prefer to believe she was "counting".

About five years ago, one day when I arrived back at the farm, shortly after moving there, I found a large cardboard box at the end of the lane, by the mailbox.

It was quite light, and when I moved it I heard a slight movement inside. Put it into the the car, took it in to the garage, opened it gingerly ...

found three or four pairs of eyes looking up at me.

Small kittens. With small container of feed.

Next morning when I came out, there was a pure white mother cat there, as well.

She was around for a while, then disappeared.

Each of those kittens had an extra toe, with claw, on all four feet.

My landlord was quite impressed, said he'd never seen anything like that before ... and found homes for them all, most with some of his relatives.

Dogs with six toes have problems.to put it plain their "nuts" don't come down and they get cancer.If the mother trys to kill it I guess she knows best for her young.It's not the point of loveing a dog with six toes it's the exspence you are put through after you spend over $800 in the first place.Pound puppy is what you got .When it comes time for the cancer treatment I bet she will be a pound puppy again.You get what you paid for.

That's funny. The dog was neutered just before she took it home.

If I had not gone to a vet and this was told to me I would not have repeated it,Why do you think mothers try to kill the runts?God gave dog mothers brains too.Case in point"the day one of my dogs gave birth the farther showed up on my door step and tried to bark his way into my house.He looked just like some of the puppies.

Goldie, the runt of a litter is the smallest, usually the last pup born to a litter, whether that be a kitten, puppy or pig. Nothing to do with the number of toes to my knowledge. We have Maine coon cats, they are the most common of the polydactyl cats, and the for fathers of the famed Hemingway cats. Breeders do not try to breed for extra toes, they are frowned upon, but they happen from time to time.

Well, if my puppy developed cancer, I would never ever ever take it to the pound! Besides, a vet can easily retrieve the undescended testicle and put it where it belongs. :)
