I think that's what I am doing...

I made a "hurryup" version of chili last night using ground beef, canned pinto beans and....Ta Dah!! Muir Glen fire roasted organic chopped tomatoes!...I added the ususal chopped onion fresh garlic, cumin, fennel, oregano ( very little) dried and ground sweet and hot chilis...

I swear those Muir glen fire roasted tomatoes are....amazing!

Eating leftovers and loving it....and going to look for more Muir Glen tomatoes! The difference between using them and using just any other red plum tomato is like night and day

Is this something I have discovered? Or am I indeed preaching to the choir?!

The Fire Roasted are pretty tasty...and are fabulous in chili!

Preaching to this choir :) Since I found them over a year ago - everything I make with these tomatoes has outstanding flavor- even the dishes I don't care for and wouldn't make again - I can taste the Muir Glen Fire Roasted tomatoes are delicious. I recently bought the Chipole Fire Roasted Muir Glens - can't wait to taste them.

"Expert" might be in the eyes of the beholder, but I do have many years experience/training in my own private life, education, and working experience. I doubt I could take my collective experience and call myself an expert, though...not like that stops some hacks in this world, though. We have a lot of so-called "experts" out there playing food-advocate and farming-expert who are anything but proper spokesmen/spokeswomen for the industries they choose to speak/write about. I've consulted on commercial compost facility operations. I've helped set up school organic gardens. I've helped set up a commercial demonstration organic garden. I'm a certified Permaculturalist. I have degrees in Horticulture and Soil Science. My own garden is mostly organic aside from chemical fertilizer use (hence, mostly). This may shock people, but if you think about it...it makes sense. In the industry you have to use a whole lot of organic management in greenhouse/field work because you can't go around introducing herbicides/pesticides in plants you're raising to test a single, specific herbicide/pesticide on.

Thank you for all the great ideas. lazygardens, I experimented with a small scale community garden this year, just to test the waters. I learned some lessons to make it more successful in the future. For one, I tucked it away sort of behind the church office. "Out of sight, out of mind" rang true. "The fields are ripe unto harvest, but the laborers are few." Right now the weeds stand taller than the pepper plants and the okra is going to seed for lack of picking. Next year, I'd like to try the heavy sheet mulching method to deter our ferocious weeds. I also need to be more diligent in recruiting volunteers to tend it. One possibility would be to locate the garden right in front of our food pantry ministry and do sort of a "pick your own" for free type of thing. As for composting, I just built a 5'X10' raised bed made out of two-high concrete blocks set on the sand. This week I filled it to overflowing with a mix of grass clippings and shredded paper. The Friday and Saturday rains already reduced it to half. This week, I'll turn it and fill it back up. This ought to make a fertile place for planting next spring. I like the mesh idea, but I've been googling around and I also like the 3 bin wooden pallet set up. Since I have an ample supply of wooden pallets, I may try that.

I did a PDC last year with pretty much no idea what it actually was. It was very much theory based- in fact I was sort of hanging out to be a paying WWOOFer after 8 hours a day of 'school'! I think it varies hugely depending on the tutor- Geoff Lawton, a big cheese in the permy world, taught ours. He does lots of work in deserts and is based in the sub-tropics, so a lot of his info had to go through a 'how does this relate to New Zealand' filter. If you're interested in learning about and using permaculture ideas, I'd read the books and just do it; if you're already really involved and want to get a diploma, get paid as a designer or teach, a PDC is pretty much a requirement. I also was a bit worried about the potential for hand-holding and Gaia-praising, but the PDC was actually very grounded and scientifically presented. If woo-woo freaks you out, stay away from biodynamics! It really works, but it and its adherents can be a bit...intense, shall we say. Just make sure a PDC is offering what you need for your money, and remember intangibles like contacts/friends made and so on. A major part of our experience was learning about (and eating a lot of!) fantastic food, but again take into account the particular interests of the people running the PDC.

Let us know where you live, and in what zone. There are probably quite a few sages that will do well. Depending on those that failed, your soil type and exposure might also be useful information for suggestions. Then there are conditions like those on south central Texas, from San Antonio and Austin east to Houston, where ground water works best, because wells tap into an aquifer where salts from an ancient sea make the well water brackish.

I've used them in some soups, but don't like the dark bits floating by. But in chili they'd be great!
BTW, if anyone's on Facebook, become a MuirGlen fan and they'll send you a coupon. There's also an offer for some $7 organic tomatoes? Sorry, I didn't have time to read it thoroughly, a friend sent me the link. Can't get FB at work!

Rachael Ray turned me on to those fire roasted tomatoes last year. I have a few cans in the pantry. Yummy!!

I have to get down on my knees at my supermarket for them. Bottom shelf of the organic section.

Yep, they are some goooood stuff. Then again, I haven't hit a bad Muir Glen product yet. Even their ketchup is good...or as good as ketchup can get.

Haven't tried Muir Glen yet. Been meaning to for a long time since I hear so much about them from whom I consider reputable sources.

Interesting thing though. America's Test Kitchen has been touting Muir Glen for as long as I can remember. A couple weeks ago they did a taste test and guess who won their test? Hunts! I got a kick out of it since the show that day was (and often is) sponsored by Muir Glen! But in other shows I still see them using Muir Glen. Maybe they get them provided by the sponsor, IDK. I just found that humorous and interesting.

Although come to think of it, their ketchup taste test normally is won by Heinz but the last time it was Hunts on that too.

Fire roasted sound perfect for chili and even a macaroni hotdish.

Funny you should mention that cynic. I tried Muir Glen and thought they were eeeh, not fabulous, not terrible.

I find Hunts brand products make a better sauce and gravy. It's the only brand that doesn't have that tinny acidic taste to me and doesn't require I add sugar or carrots to the base.
