Range sticking out too much?

We are remodeling our entire kitchen. We had to modify our cabinets on one section and reduce the depth by 2 inches to deal with a space issue. Now our free-standing range will stick out 3 inches from the cabinets (plus, an additional 2 inches of handle). I know this is a little more than normal, but I am wondering how big of a deal this is from an aesthetic perspective. What do you all think? The alternate plan is to flip-flop the entire room of cabinets, which will work, but does require the replacement of one cabinet and the additional of some filler shelves etc. and the cost of labor and the time lost. Would you just live with the range sticking out a bit more than usual or would you shell out more money to swap the cabinets and gain 2 more inches of cabinet depth?

If you have a solution that does not compromise the function, I would do it. If the flip-flop arrangement is a worse layout, I would live with the odd range bumpout.

I swapped out my old range for my parents' older-but-better-made range last summer. Whether due to my shallow cabinets or to the fact that we couldn't get it slid all the way back, my range is currently sticking out 7 inches from the cabinets, not including the handle. Honestly, while not ideal, it's not as noticeable as it sounds. I'm sure you won't even notice your smaller bump-out with time, and if it improves function over-all, I'd go for it.

However...you mention just shrinking one section of cabinets. Does this mean the range would stick out more from one side than from the other? I think asymmetry might bother me more.

There are plenty of people with standard freestanding ranges that project out of the counter a full 6" and who have 36" aisles (30" at the pinch point) and are fine with that dimension. That is tighter than recommended and would be too tight for me, but there is certainly no reason you need 51" aisles unless you are planning for wheelchair access. You can keep your current planned aisle space and still have room enough for two people to work there just fine with 48" You could even do smaller aisles and it be fine. You're over thinking this.

I alter granite countertops and cabinets for appliance changes regularly. It isn't a big deal. If you called me, I would insist the rangetop be on site before I arrived. This is so we can both see it is installed properly when I leave. I no longer take manufacturer's dimensions as gospel; that's an unpaid callback. Last two paragraphs, please.

That is the thrummed oven door I think I’ve seen. Definitely the thinned I’ve noticed. It seems like they’re usually and inch or so deep, which could be why the sides of your stick out so much. We have a regular old free standing range and you can only see the door, but overall I’d say the depth of the whole range is probably about the same. It looks like it’s a close to the wall as it can be.

@chispa, having the integrated counter depth fridge be 26" deep is pretty standard and pantry cabinets tend to be deeper too, In principle, you are of course correct. But we made out lower cabinets 30" deep for extra countertop space (awesome decision; so happy we did that!). So, there wasn't any intrinsic reason why the architect would have had to also pull the tall cabinets forward. And the fridge is integrated, so it is intended to be installed flush in its cabinet. so it isn't like your kitchen designer had some secret knowledge. No, it definitely isn't "secret knowledge" per se. It's just the ability to think on your feet and to recognize how every decision has consequences. The architect absolutely could have skipped this detail and things would still have fit; they just wouldn't look quite as polished. Also, it was their expertise to decide to put these two tall cabinets on that particular wall so that they would frame the range. @wdccruise, I would not do anything like you are suggesting. There always are trade-offs with all of these decisions. If you have the space in the floor plan to pull cabinets forward, and if you are comfortable making the needed adjustments (non-standard countertop dimensions; non-standard end-panel dimensions; built-up back wall or custom cabinet boxes; trim piece behind range; ...), then extra deep countertops are wonderful. Whoever decided on 24" counters as a default really didn't have ergonomics in mind. 24" is good for other reasons (cost and room size), but it isn't good for giving you adequate working areas.

Will the range stick out 3" past the cab frames themselves? If so, don't forget about the counter overhang, which is standard at 1.5". That will reduce the amount your range protrudes. I think a 1.5" differential from the edge of your counter is completely acceptable. I wouldn't change up your plans for that, but you're the one who has to live with it. My rangetop sticks out 1.75" plus the knob depth from the counter edge, and I think it looks fine. If it'll bother you everytime you look at it, change it now and move on.

My range sticks out from my cabinets...I thought this type of range was supposed to stick out? The area with the burners doesn't protrude past the cabinets and countertops...but the oven controls, burner knobs and of course the oven handle protrude. It looks perfectly normal with a pro-style range or cooktop, at least I think so! :)

You could also just have the countertop fabricated to curve/bump out to meet the sides of the range to correct the extra depth visually. Very similar to what oldbat2b did in her kitchen (as shown above), but without bumping the cabinets out on either side. That's what we did with ours as I felt the rangetop stuck out too much.
