I've been meaning to post pics before now, but taking them and uploading them seems so time consuming! So here's a few pics from my phone that I finally uploaded...

No new cabinets. Maybe someday I'll get to have a custom cabinet maker to make me new doors but for now I'll live with them. They are sturdy, 3/4" shelving/dovetail drawers but are covered with thermofoil - which cleans up really easy but does feel "plasticy" to touch.

Anyhow, replaced white laminate with emerald pearl, 80 sq feet. New sink (Ticor), new faucet (Delta pull down, forget the name) and new lights. And LED undercabinet lighting that I absolutely LOVE!

The UCL looks bluer in the pics than in real life. They are a bright white (neutral white) from environmnetallights.com. Fairly easy to install, and they dim.

I love my new faucet, and my stainless sink. Its a 60/40 - 8" and 10" deep, with grids. I don't have a pic of it close-up. the backsplash is Lowe's 3X6 subway tile for $.23 each and paid a tiler $200 for installation.

Of course, I love my granite and UCL the best of all.

My next purchase will be an induction range and matching OTR microwave (I know, really frowned upon but I like them)

My dishwasher is 12 years old, so will probably do all three at the same time. Fridge had to be replaced last year, we got a white FD, bottom freezer drawer and really like it. I guess I don't have any pics of it - its located across from the end of the peninsula.

So that's it! Totaled around $10K, with $8K being the granite. Rest was lighting, paint, backsplash, sink, faucet. and window valances.

Wow it looks like a whole new space! I've heard from many people that adding something like granite can make everything else look cheap and old in comparison, but I have to say that the changes really make your cabinets look nicer! The granite and change in lighting make them look a bit softer and not so crazy white.

If you can't find matching cabinets, then maybe you could go for the unfitted look and get a hutch or hutch-looking cabinets, painted a color. I'd just like to put in a vote for an island--or at least a cart. In our old house the floor, like yours, was sort of too empty without an island, but too small for a permanent one. We had what we called the "baking cart" that was made of butcher block and happened to have a perfect little spot to fit away when not in use. It was really useful and held a lot of stuff. it was not an island for seating/eating or anything--but a much-needed extra work surface. I like the cart examples you posted earlier--Crate and Barrel also has a nice one that comes in a small or larger size. I would definitely say get something that has storage. I wanted to say also that I am a little nervous about cabinets a full 24" deep on the wall you have marked. I think they will really impede traffic flow. If it's panrty storage you need you could get that with something shallower. The tape is a good idea but to really get an idea of how cabinets would make the room feel, make some 3-D mockups with boxes--that way you will really get a sense of the mass. One spot that seems ripe to me for an additional cabinet is where the garbage can in now--that would be an incredibly useful spot both for storage and more counter. Could the trash go somewhere else--under the sink maybe? HTH

we had to move hot water radiators in our remodel. Call a plumber or your boiler service company and ask. Also, they will need to drain the whole system to be able to do this, so you don't want to do it in the dead of winter. Generally speaking. It's a day's time from the plumber plus the cost of the materials on rerouting the lines. I would guess it would be between $500-$1200 depending on your existing situation and how much work it is to get to the pipes.

We had some progress at the end of the week, but we're officially behind schedule now. On Thursday, I spoke with the GC, and said that we absolutely had to have the tile floor in the family room sealed, and the pantry finished by Friday. This would allow us to start getting the kitchen put back together prior to the granite getting here next week. The tile was sealed, but the finish ended up to shiny for us, and streaky. They will try again next week. The pantry is about half finished. They are coming today to complete the pantry, so we might still be able to put a lot away this weekend. Anyway, here are some pictures. The cabinet fronts have all been refinished, and rehung. These are the new drawers for the island riser. Okay, you twisted my arm. I've bought a new card reader for my camera and I'm posting some temp photos which will be deleted soon. I'm making supper here--chicken to work over (fat globs and other scraps go into trash), sad looking salad greens and peas (too hot outdoors and the lettuce has bolted), herbs to chop, veg and onion ready to be cut up. I usually sit at stool but DH stands here. Compost tray runs along side of blue drawer organizer (repurposed container we got with Alaskan shrimp in it). Remember--our top drawers were made shallow because of pull-out board. If I had it to do over, I'd make them just a big deeper by shortening the drawers and bins below--to prevent items from jamming drawers. I am grateful for 90 degree countertop edge because I can brush things into the trash or the pan so reliably and it cuts down the cleanup. If I did not have the pull-out board, I'd put the pan parallel to the countertop, as suggested above. Makes good sense. We used to put a big bowl or dishpan on a stool below the edge of our chopping surface when we needed to work over lots of veg or apples for freezing--same idea. I can put this pan into my top drawer under baking area pullout board also--can receive excess flour sprinkled on the countertop or the breadboard or dough scraps. You could do the same in any drawer next to a baking surface. I've extended the drawer far enough for you to see the pan within; usually we don't pull it out very far unless the front of the pan is already full or unless we're working with sloppy things like tomatoes. I put my eggshells into the pan when making breakfast--the drawer glides out so easily! I try to remember to crush them in my fist as I do this so the composting begins sooner and the shells get mixed with other items sooner. The compost bin is an Ikea item which I think has been discontinued; you buy taller ones now with the same footprint. This one has built-in handles. The boot below it allows me to roll it out with one hand. Lid is not tight and can be opened with one hand. The long compost tray is a bit awkward to handle when it's full and needs to be emptied--in an earlier moment in the evolution of the kitchen I used a different skinny pan and it was perfect to sling around, but it held a lot less. I'm used to this one now so it doesn't matter but at first I dumped it on the floor a few times when using one hand, aargh! The lesson is...don't put off emptying it when you're cleaning up the kitchen.

Thanks! I should've posted daytime pictures as the color of the walls is different in the daytime. Sometimes looks bluish gray and sometimes greenish gray. I love it.

I forgot to include the hardware for cab doors, but they were from Lowes also, not expensive. But changing all the polished brass stuff to brushed nickel (and stainless faucet) made such a difference!. And the other lighting was polished brass (ceiling fan about island that you can't see was white/polished brass) was changed to pewter.

yeah I think in this case, the granite made my cabinets looks nicer. Feels like a new kitchen!

Can you say where you got your granite and who did it for you? I'm near Bailes and haven't seen any others within hours.

Gorgeous! Love the transformation, and all that beautiful Emerald Pearl!! Really, really nice job!! Keep us posted on the induction range, would love to hear your review.

I got the granite in columbus OH (Stone Mart), and the fabricators/installers were from Port Washington (? i think) OH, and their name is Designer Stone. We are 2-3 hours from Port Washington, but thats who my KD from Parkersburg WV deals with. I kind of got the impression my house was one of the farthest away from them they did, but it wasn't a problem. Probably they want to keep the KD in Parkersburg happy.
Are you talking about Bailes in Charleston? I have friends who have used them, but to be honest, I never even got a quote from them. My KD would've used them if I wanted, but told me they were more expensive in his opinion, (probably because they ARE the only ones around here) but his primary reason for recommending Designer Stone was their method of templating. Its some kind of computer state-of-the-art thing. and its guaranteed to fit within a 1/32 of an inch. I was impressed with their installation, I tell you. But I thought the price high, tho like I said - I didn't even shop around. I just asked my KD who he likes, went where they told me to pick it out, and paid what they asked. probably not smart - but oh well! I love it!

I most certainly will let you know how I like the induction range - whenever I get it! My DH said probably by June, but I'm not pushing it as I have other bills I should pay off first :( and the electric coil range is not bothering me so much like it did at first. I guess I'm getting used to how it looks with the granite - but of course a smooth top range of ANY kind would look better! DH is getting to retirement age and we're trying to get debt free.

I think it looks awesome - all of your "small" changes made a HUGE difference! Great choices and a great example of how you can make small changes without doing a gut remodel and still have an amazing transformation.
