Do you name your GPS?

I've been enjoying reading the thread about car naming. I don't do that, but we have named our GPS. I think it's having a voice that makes it seem alive. What about you?

We named ours Lola. She has an Australian accent and it just seemed good.

PandP, we use the Australian woman as well! We love her accent. I was calling her Sheila, the aussie slang for a woman, but DH wasn't comfortable with that name. That's the name of his ex, that he despises. LOL

It's more often than not "Matilda". Poor thing.

I love growing my own plants, so I will knock on doors and ask people for seeds and cuttings. I've made some great garden friends in the process, one elderly lady who nearly landscaped my whole yard because I offered to help her clear out overgrown yard for the plants. She had some seriously gorgeous large bromeliads that sold for $50 each at the one place you could buy them in the area. I must have gotten $1,000 worth or bromeliads and other plants from her for 8 hours of work. We remained friends and I got even more plants from her in years to come. I also trade plants and seeds with people online and off, and dig up, get seeds from, or take cuttings from beautiful blooming natives from the side of the road. I have no pride when it comes to my garden. LOL Of course, I buy half-dead perennials from Lowe's and WalMart markdown racks and bring them back to live. I also live in an apartment complex and have gotten some plants people left behind or gave to me when they moved. I also used to belong to a community garden and got quite a few free plants and seeds from there. I was just figuring how much I've spent over the past 3 years since I"ve lived in this apartment on plants, and it came out to less than $50 and most of that was fertilizer and potting soil. Speaking of potting soil, Lowe's will sometimes mark down broken bags, because they can't sell them for full price. I got 5 bags of nice, organic soil for 50% off by offering to take the broken bags off their hands for a discount. Same for plants with broken pots. I got a beautiful peach tree once for 1/2 price because the pot had split down the side and wouldn't hold water, so it was drying out and dying. But the best and most treasured seeds and plants I get are from GWers. I have such good friends here who regularly send me plants and seeds for no reason at all except they know I love growing from seed and don't have much of a budget. I always pass the favor forward or send them something I know they are looking for.

My house is "The Little House of Horrors on the Prairie." It's small, it's on the prairie, and from Day 1 it's developed into a money pit of problems. I have the "Gate Keeper Garden". It's a huge (28"?) pot near the gate leading from the driveway to the patio area that joins the garage with the mudroom entry. It usually holds purple and variegate petunias, white cosmos or those green "Spikey" things, trailing verbena, and tri-color sweet potato vine. It also has a bluebird box mounted on a 4' pole set in the center of the pot Wrens usually nest in the box and spend the summer picking bugs out of the garden. Win-win. The "Patio Garden" is the only area in the patio not filled with concrete. It's a hot, dry, scalded with mid-day sun, and shaded in the morning and late afternoon. It is a semi-circle area the steps to the mudroom and the former steps to the Sun Porch. On the advice of a garden manager in Fargo, I planted a dwarf Norwegian Spruce there and tucked creeping phlox around it. The spruce grows in a near perfectly round shape and should get to nearly 5' tall and 5' wide. It never needs pruning. It has grown beautifully and is thriving. I have the "South/Vegetable Garden." I know this is will sound surprising, LOL, but it's on the south side of the house (in front of the Gate Keeper Garden) and holds most of the vegetables. I shoehorn a couple dozen marigolds in it and consider the flowering chives as "decorative." I have the "Hosta Garden" on the north side of the house. It's a work-in-progress, but holds hostas, bleeding hearts, mosses, lily of the valley, violas, and a few Columbine that migrated over from the neighbor's house. I'm in the process of adding in an old 1940s birdbath (original to this house) as a Fairy Garden. A Virginia Creeper popped up (again from the neighbor's) so I'll probably train and prune it to twine around the base of the birdbath. In the front I'm still working on two rock (as in granite mini-boulders; most are much bigger than basketballs) gardens. There's a 6-ft. wide walkway, newly planted with grass between the two roughly-paisley shaped gardens. The larger one, closer to the street is "Stonehenge." It will be filled with mostly cottage-type perennials. The slightly smaller one, closer to the driveway, is "Stone Age." This year it's filled with the overflow tomatoes, cabbage, and Swiss Chard from the South Garden.

Err, I am definitely not a troll, and I'm seriously writing a paper on this; if I can get enough data, that is. And yes, quite a lot of people name their appliances, mostly computers and phones, but also hoovers, fridges, microwaves, even bookends (my favourite so far is a hoover called Gollum). As to why: well, that's one of the things I want to know. If you don't name any objects, then there's absolutely no need for you to click on that link. If you do, though, your answers would really be helpful to me. weedmeister, if you consistently refer to that one microwave as "Piece of Crap", that does indeed count. But if you call any appliance that's acting up "Piece of Crap" and the microwave just happens to be called that most often because it's just rubbish, then that's not a name.

I suggest buying the Honda unit. They are very friendly and much easier to use with their larger displays and such than a portable unit. They also can't be stolen since they are part of the car (not easily anyway). If you do want to buy a portable unit, Garmen units are superb from ease of use. Like the Honda unit, they are pricier than the competition but work quite well (I have two).

one is Samantha and I can not remember what we named mine, I never use it anyway so basically we only use Samantha/Sam/Sammy

Not the GPS but the phone that is built into the Camaro, I call her *i*ch because she can't understand a Southern accent! Anytime I tell her a number to dial she doesn't understand. I told her I was going to delete her number from my contacts, she didn't care.

We call our GPS "Hal". Hal was the first computerized voice in the movie A Space Odessy 2001.

Dd had an invisible friend named Jennifer who kept doing naughty things and getting into stuff at our house. The GPS has such an attitude some times that we decided she must be Jennifer. Has anyone else noticed how happy she is when "Arriving at destination."? You can just hear that smile in her voice.

We called our Garmin "Mrs. G". We're not too creative! We are still referring to our TomTom as her, but haven't really thought of a name. Sometimes, seems like DumDum might be good.

DH calls her his mistress. Her voice is breathy and sexy. DH will say "there's my girl". Then we laugh because I can't hide my annoyance.

I ignore her just for spite! I love to hear her say 'please make a legal U-turn' so I can say 'I don't think so toots'.

I feel so empowered.

No name for the GPS or my computer that talks... or the phone.

terilyn, do you ever watch The Big Bang Theory? They had a episode with a bit about voice recognition on the phone. It was funny.

You betcha, we named ours Della. My DH just tells me to turn her down so he doesn't have to listen to her when we don't follow "her" directions.

The one on my Android phone is Susan, and the Garmin is Janelle. They are named after my old high school friend, Susan, and her younger sister, Janelle (who was later a grade school teacher for both of my kids). :-)

Everyone's comments are funny!
They're okay but they are far from perfect. Mine will have us driving through a subdivision, or around a big block just to get back on the street we were on.

When we do turn as told, she will sometimes say "recalculating".

The other day I had the GPS and my street map out.

I don't like to use them repeatedly, I find that people rely on the directions, instead of paying attention to how they got there.

I call mine Portia. My DD's best friend was thinking of naming her first baby Portia and neither of us liked the name for a little girl.

I call mine "Ripley" after the Sigourney Weaver character in the "Alien" movies. Strong and authoritative. "Make a U-turn , if possible" is her most frequent saying.

We bought our GPS three years ago when we were going to Missouri to see my son and then to Buffalo to husband's sister and his home town. We named ours not very long into our trip. She is Jila. Jila was a little Asian girl who came to my class in pre-school. She was very quiet and shy. For about two weeks. When we went out onto the playground, we wouldn't be out there for longer than five minutes and a child would come up and tell us that " Jila is bossin' us again!"
