vascular necrosis.... my son may have it in his hips

and I am very scared for him. he still doesn't have a job and will be covered on our insurance through july 10th. The doctor wants to wait and do another MRI with a special vascualr necrosis test as well as the regular mri with cntrast shot into his hip. He says hit hurts a LOT. The doc said if it is VN, we caught it early, but the course of actions don't sound too great. I don't know what will happen if he has no insurance, ... it's making me sick.

I'm sorry Kat. Hopefully, that's not what it is. You're son's too young to have to deal with that.

It sounds so awful, but let's hope for the best, Kat. My heart aches for you and the anxiety you feel for your DS. Nothing scares us more than worrying about our kids. Is there any way to extend the insurance?

I fell last fall but did not immediately remember what had happened to one leg; after I began physical therapy this spring I remembered my right leg had been jammed beneath me; I had to pry it out from under my back. It apparently messed up all my hip muscles. When an xray was finally taken last December it revealed my femur had slightly subluxed out of my hip socket, but nobody shared with me what this meant in terms of risk to my hip, ie avascular necrosis (I found out several months later by looking it up on the internet.) I now have no cartilage in that hip, but it doesn't feel too bad as long as I take the liquid "Drinkables" glucosamine-chondroitin-msm-collagen thing I take, as well as an assortment of vitamins (B complex, niacin, folic acid, cod liver oil, C, E with selenium). Sometimes I sweat a lot, but other than that there is no real symptom of infection that I recognize as such. Sometimes after I walk (with canes) my hip has a burning sensation. My right leg is now shorter than the left, but I am not allowed to use a heel lift as that would increase pressure on the hip. Now that the AVN boogeyman is in the picture, I fear I may lose my physical therapy, which I think is beginning to straighten out the hip alignment. I have to go see an orthopedic surgeon, who will undoubtedly just want to operate. If I get operated on, I will be stuck with a 20th century hip replacement instead of the new injectable cartilage I expect to see come down the pike anytime now. Supposedly I don't have the space for this, but with the new bone positioning techniques they have for fractures I don't know why not. I'm hoping to buy enough time to lose more weight, at the very least. My hip does limit my activity significantly.

What a nice surprise to find some old friends here this weekend - Florence, I'm glad to see you're doing well - I think of you! We're getting a little break in weather today (spring has been cool, wet). I pruned roses a little late, then found critical deer had done my job over, which led to me pruning again to straighten up what they'd reshaped. Someone has to come to an understanding around here on who gets the final say on the roses :) My fault, I'd been lax in spraying repellent with the uninviting weather, now this afternoon I've got to get that done so it doesn't happen again. I'm a tad over 70 now. I have two artificial hips. Left was December 2004; right, January 2006. Needing to use steroids for asthma ruined my hip joints early. Hips are *easy*, with easy recovery. KNEES seem to be much harder! (Hips move 'back and forth', while knees have to 'rotate'.) Thanks to 'a better world through chemistry' (drugs), this is NOT a painful surgery or recovery. I borrowed a raised toilet seat, walker and cane from our Senior Center's lending closet. I bought a long shoehorn which I still enjoy using. I walked the day after surgery and came home after a couple nights on an ordinary surgical ward. DH was my 'step and fetch it' and was able to nuke frozen dinners for the first few nights. I was walking around the grocery store with him a week after surgery. (How many frozen dinners can a person tolerate? LOL) A visiting nurse came to our (single level) home to do the blood testing while I was on blood-thinners. A physical therapist came to our home to teach me exercises and put me through my paces. (DO them! You will recover faster and have greater strength.) My first hip was somewhat more successful than the second -- but I'm happy with both. I can't imagine NOT doing this so that you can WALK WITHOUT PAIN again. Oh, I just remembered that I was on a plane to Maui shortly after the second surgery. I had wheelchairs at the airports and made sure to walk around a bit in flight to avoid clots, but...no worries! No need for heavy meds after either replacement.

Well the room is morphing into something else. Son likes this cheap "O" jazz mirrored mural, its sorta cool and cheesy at the same time. The furniture was looking a little too mature so I think the mural adds some 20yr old youth and it ties in the black and light gray carpet to the room. It will be spaced and placed behind the sofa and take up a big area. He has a long narrow room that's now limited on space due to the big a$$ chair, difficult having any symmetry so thinking of two matching small bench/stool/ottoman type seating across from chair. I did a layout to scale and sm bench/stools are the only way to get extra seating without blocking the TV viewing. Of course I am now hung up on seating again. I found a sight online called m!dnight velvet; don't know anything about them except they have some low cost slightly unusual stuff. Son doesn't have much room for more side tables (see large coffee table in above post) so we are thinking of the sm head or the tufted ceramic stool/tables below to use as a table and possibly doubling as extra seating (but not sure). The rooms accent colors will need to change as well but we are waiting for the mirror mural for inspiration. Right now we are thinking a purple/blue accent but that could change. Also think we need texture but not sure how to add that unless it's just in some pillows or I come up with another idea for stools/tables/bench. We also decided against black curtains in the living area, might be too much black with the black carpet and black in mirror mural so we bought these pale gold ones from sm@rtbargins. The window is across the room from the big a$$ chair so I was thinking it would look better to have a similar color on the window to balance it out a bit. I'm trying to buy all the furniture from craigslist to stay in my $1,200 budget (not including accessories) but still need a 48" round used dining set. I'm so sick sick sick of looking on CL but have too to keep the cost down. If I see one more ad that says "designer" I'm going to flip a lid! Of course it's designer, someone designed it!!! And don't get me started on "custom" ads. P.S, I'm sorry about these pictures but I'm having trouble with my cable or photobucket and also my overloaded brain so please forgive as I will figure it out later. Oh my goodness Kat. What a huge worry. I hope dr is wrong. Any way to extend the insurance?

He'll be 25 then? I think the age was changed recently for having kids on your insurance.

I'm sorry about all this, I hope he can either get things taken care of before he has no insurance or that the doctors have made a mistake with their diagnosis and it is something much simpler. (((Kat and Ryan)))

Geez Kat, you so don't need this to worry about too.

My kids stayed on my insurance policy until their 26th birthday.

I will be keeping Ry in my healing thoughts and prayers.
Our county has a program for the medically disadvantaged....not Medicaid, but a short term assistance.
Perhaps you could call your county services and inquire about any programs.
Keep us updated, please.

I am so sorry to hear this, Kat. You have enough problems taking care of your health; it's not fair that Ryan would have problems. If he is unable to find a job, he should qualify for Medicaid. I will remember him in my prayers. Please keep us posted on his progress.

When I hear stories like this I am glad I live in Canada, we don't have to worry losing our Health Care, it is always there for everyone.

The only requirement other then having a pre existing condition is that he must be uninsured for 6 months prior. No getting around that but if he can wait that long before treatment, this is the way to go. He cannot be denied and my premiums went from $1500 per MONTH to $250.00 with twice the coverage.

I am in Arizona. Washington has their own plan so it might be different.

Check it out Kat. It is a lifesaver.

Oh , no! I'm so sorry to hear this. You already have enough to worry about, and it's just awful when our kids are I'll. I hope it turns out to be something easily resolved. (((Ryan and Kat)))

thank you everyone. Thank you Magic. this condition isn't listed. But we don't know for sure. I think I may be physically sick right now. I've worked myself into a variance migraine. LOL WAAAAA lol I hate health problems! lol He has had so many.

Kat, it doesn't matter if his condition isn't listed only that he would be uninsurable with a regular insurance company because of his condition. Please check into it and don't discount it. It's Federal law that he has to be accepted. Then in 2014, the new health care law goes into effect and a regular insurance company will not be allowed to turn him down.

I have been here and done it and I have better insurance than I have had in 15 years and I save $1300 A MONTH in premiums.

Let's hope so, Magic, let's hope so. I still can't understand why so many Americans are happy to pay into such a huge, extremely profitable business. Yes, enjoyingspring, you are lucky indeed. Kat, I'm soooo sorry you have this added to your other worries and will continue to keep you both in my prayers.

Sweet Kat, I wish I could take all your problems and erase them and make things better. I admire you so much because you're always so up and positive about your own illness that it just doesn't seem fair. You and now Ryan are still in my prayers.
