I'm thinking 8-12 weeks. I don't remember totally. I hope your pain goes away or your doctor can help you discern where it's coming from.

Florence, I'm no expert, I've not had this type of surgery but I have had others. I can tell you that at 6 weeks post operative it is still way early in the healing process. It seems that since you are still healing internally those zaps and zings you are feeling may be expected. I'd give myself more time to heal. Hopefully everyday will get better and better for you. I'd call my surgeon's office just to double check as well.

Florence, go here Dermatomes image search. is decent. Find where your pain is, do you have back problems with that disk?

You can also do a search for doctor posters. I have copies of different posters, another has the nerves. If you need help, email me from my member page. Hubby had an accident last week was in Abington Trauma Hospital, I have him home now. Not a lot of time to surf. He was delivering cars to Sussman Mazda & fell from the top deck, fractures in his face & skull & right shoulder, but he's doing good.

Good luck. I'm sorry to hear you are still in pain. You've had much better luck then me. Since you do suffer from back problems, my guess is it could be disk related but could be too early to tell. Do bring it up.

Florence - you could call and talk to the nurse at your doctor's office. Let them know what the pain feels like. They can tell you if it is normal or have you come in and check it out. I hope it is just part of the normal healing process. My doc said it would be 10-12 weeks post-op before I can consider myself healed. I am at week 5...

Florence, has the pain been with you since the surgery or did it appear later. If you didn't have a sudden onset of increased pain, my very uneducated guess would be it's an unfortunate part of your healing process - everyone's different and your recovery is your own. Apparently even our nerves and their patterns can be our own...my own pre-surgery pain was more 'thigh' than groin - groin was thought to be more normal and my doctor said I had a very 'weird nerve distribution pattern'

I didn't have pain so much as weakness of the operated leg at six weeks...I'd done right side compensating to avoid pain for so long my left leg had become remarkably weak - that took weeks and weeks of PT to resolve (and I was 52 yrs old). If it even was resolved, I still find myself with all my weight on my right leg from time to time :)

Are you cemented? And when do you have the thigh pain, is it troublesome when you are at rest or only when using your legs? I dug out some info collected a few years ago and found -

"thigh pain from a cementless femur component is quite frequent during the first two postoperative years, although the X-ray shows well healed shaft of the total hip prosthesis."

My own hip is cementless so I didn't have much on cemented parts, but this is a major procedure either way and 6 weeks is soon to have very high expectations for yourself. Please hang in there and don't worry, I only wish you were seeing your doctor and putting your mind at ease this week instead of next. ((((Hugs))))

I guess I'm just expecting too much ---too soon----Of course the experience I had with the first hip makes me a little more apprehensive.

My PT was here today----and he said it is too soon to become worried-----He said 6 weeks is early--
He has cut back on some of the exercises-----just doing the isometrics in bed.

He also thinks all the emotional upset doesn't help with healing-----
Plus I will soon be 78 years old and it takes longer to heal as you get older.--

I have to get more information about my surgery----I'm not sure if he used cement----

I'm pretty sure he used the Zimmer method-----

So I will be patient and hopefully by next spring I will be raring to go out to my roses.

I agree with your PT, nobody no matter how young or strong can heal that fast from major surgery! LOL, just take care, you'll get there and I KNOW you will be back in your garden next spring for sure! This was a good time for your surgery because you'll have all those cold months to heal, hybernate, rest and look at beautiful rose catalogs in hopes of spring and your gorgeous roses.

I'm sorry you're going through so much pain. I guess eventually you'll be in better shape than before the operation. I am afraid I'm going to need hip replacement someday and it doesn't sound easy at all. I think it takes quite a bit of courage to go through such a major operation.

I am sorry to hear that you are still having pain. The first thing I thought of was that with the emotional stress going on, that would certainly hinder the healing process. How are things with your dear daughter? You and I are in the same boat right now, with our DD going through so much heartache over guys who don't deserve such loving and special ladies. I do think of you & your daughter as I try to help my Grace get through this rough
time and all of you are in my prayers.

I think you are one heroic lady and you will be just fine in time. It is frustrating when our bodies don't cooperate as we hope, but 6 weeks doesn't sound like a lot of time to me...I would expect you'd have some pain after such a major operation, but here's wishing that you are already feeling much better!

You know the story of my dear son and the 13 major operations he went through during his childhood. He also suffered a fractured femur after one of his legs was lengthened and to this day I will never forget the sight of the broken bones sticking up out of his thigh. He was only 7 yrs. old and very frail because he was so underweight (he refused food because he was in so much pain from the different surgeries). After each surgery he was confined to wheelchairs, then graduated to walkers, then to crutches but it took years of physcial therapy.
As you know, he is now married and 23 yrs. old and still walks with a limp and will have to wear braces on his legs for the rest of his life. I firmly believe that those who go through a lot of pain in their life are the kindest, most loving people of all. You and Tim are proof of this.

WOW Celeste----You sure have had your share of trouble--I understand your pain about your DD---We can only pray that yours and mine will get stronger

My father had to have nine surgeries somewhere in Phila but back in the early 1900's they were limited as to treatments for Polio---

I'm so happy you little boy is now able to live a normal life with just a little limp----I'm happy he has found someone to share his life with.

Having seriously ill children is indeed a mother's heartbreak, I know that feeling too and can relate to your photos, I see my own son in both of them.

They are still very INSPIRING stories, after all the pain and hardship we still have them to love and enjoy!

I often think of my grandmother and how painful it had to be for her ---to watch her son crawl for all those years--She was a strong woman and she even gave my father chores to do---for instance --he was resposible for cleaning the baseboards because he could reach them--

I'm sure this helped to make him the strong independent man he became-----

The Dr. didn't seem concerned about what I told him----He just said it takes a long time to heal and keep on doing the PT etc.

I guess I've just been overly concerned after the experience I had with the right hip

Dr. said this prosethesis is much more flexible than the other one and he doubts I will have another stress fractur--

Good for the good news :) Now you still TAKE IT EASY... but you are always cautioning folks about that, so I'll assume you can rest yourself as well :) I know it's hard, lol.

6 weeks does sound short for major bone-work, I'd think [not that I'd know]. I did have a small wrist fracture that hurt for 6 weeks, so surely it's common for bones to ache as they heal. You just took too much Vicodin the last time [teasing ;]!

Husband had TH in2009. Things went well for 2months. Then, he had severe groin pain. Surgeon said "walk". Finally, after much pain,it was determined hip was infected. Surgery to clean are was done 1 year later. Severepain continues. All tests show implant is in correct location, but hip feels like it is trying to pop out. The past 2 weeks pain has become very severe. Consulted another orthopod who ordered tests--bone scan BWI and blood tests.

Carlotta--I was surprised to see your post pop up---I'm surprised to see I never posted about my second stress fracture in the hip that was done in 2007---another 3 months in a wheelchair---but now here in 2012 I seem to be doing OK---not perfect but OK---I'm 82 now so there has to be wear and tear on this old body----now the knees are acting up---but I can walk around and enjoy my garden---just don't do much gardening --

What a nice surprise to find some old friends here this weekend -

Florence, I'm glad to see you're doing well - I think of you! We're getting a little break in weather today (spring has been cool, wet). I pruned roses a little late, then found critical deer had done my job over, which led to me pruning again to straighten up what they'd reshaped. Someone has to come to an understanding around here on who gets the final say on the roses :)

My fault, I'd been lax in spraying repellent with the uninviting weather, now this afternoon I've got to get that done so it doesn't happen again.
