Too hot to cook.

I can't believe this weather! It is Nov. 15th and it is 90º outside on the deck. It was suppose to get in the 80's this weekend but they never said anything about it being 90º.

I have all the fans going, no AC, and don't want to cook. What should I make for dinner? I got steaks to cook on the grill tomorrow and am going to make potato salad but wasn't planning on it being so hot today.

90+ is the norm here for most of the year Clare so I feel your pain. I think I'd make a nice salad and a big pitcher of iced tea.

Thunder and lightning skirted the horizon for a couple of hours last evening. Around nine-ish, the storms decided to meander over to us and park on top of us. For about five or so hours, we got one of the most fabulous lightning shows I have seen in a while. Oh, and it dropped a goodly amount of rain. Nothing approaching flood levels, but enough to know everything got a good drink. Droplets of water still cling to the grass and the plants. Rather strange after getting used to dust coating everything. We were without power until this morning, but that only enhanced the enjoyment of the show. Sitting in the dark watching the lightning illuminate everything in a freeze frame sort of way. Pictures at Exhibition type scenes. It's still oppressively hot and humid.

Black plastic nursery pots?
Q

Bellegallica: I hoard plastic pots, and friends hoard them for me -- not only the black ones, but the dark green ones, brown ones and the maroonish ones. They're cheap (as in free, usually), easy to store, durable (some more so than others) and almost infinitely re-useable. Who DOESN'T love 'em? However, I don't agree that plastic is superior in all ways to clay. When I've potted-up multiples of a single variety -- some in clay, some in plastic -- I've found that the ones in clay generally develop more quickly, both above and below the soil. Try a test of your own to see if you observe the same difference. If, during the course of a summer day, one were to go to the trouble of monitoring interior soil temperatures in the two types of pots, my strong hunch is that the soil in clay would consistently be cooler than the soil in a plastic pot of comparable size. Plants in clay do dry out faster -- not only because of heat, but due to the porosity of the clay and the attendant higher rate of transpiration. The more moist the soil, the more heat it will retain under summer conditions. IMO, the fact that plants in clay dry out faster is a good thing. Clay makes for better aeration of the soil which, in turn, promotes good root growth. Throughout the summer months I have to water everything in my pot ghetto frequently anyway, so the fact that the plants in clay get thirsty more quickly makes very little difference, time-wise or water-wise. There are a couple of independent specialist nurseries near here that whitewash the exteriors of black plastic pots to reflect heat. I've considered attempting that, but haven't (and probably won't). You're probably correct that black plastic will absorb more heat from winter sun than clay. How long that heat is retained, though, likely depends on the gauge of plastic used in fabricating the pot.

Boneless/skinless chicken breast advise please

The spinach was not frozen, and so I sautéed it briefly to reduce the volume and make it easier to stuff. I added Asiago cheese to the filling to give it more flavor, but the result was very bland, even though I seasoned the chicken with my Cajun seasoning mix. I had also added fresh basil to the spinach mixture. I made three breasts, and we only ate one of them, and so I have two left over, besides the raw ones that I froze. The white wine (Chardonnay) that I added did make a nice sauce, but a pasta sauce would have been more flavorful. I also made some plain brown basmati rice. The last time I made brown basmati rice I added to many other ingredients (I was making Jambalaya), and the rice never got tender. Having plain rice only added to the blandness of the meal. Adding more pepper to the chicken would have helped, I think. Lars

TOOOO!!!!! Hot to Cook!!!!!!

Either early in the morning or later at night, I've been baking chicken and then have it for cold chicken salad, or to heat in the microwave later. Even had some chicken and noodles the other night since I only had to heat one burner for that. Got some ham and made ham salad too. I've been trying to heat the kitchen only in the early morning or late evening and then I can use the microwave to reheat something for meals. Meatloaf, lasagna, casseroles can all be made ahead and then refrigerated or frozen. Made a pot roast in the crockpot since it didn't heat up the kitchen. As long as my family will heat hot meals I'll try to make them just not during the hottest part of the day

I'm the most naive 54 year old on the planet. I should think about you folks like I do the guys at work. Never take anything said at face value. The weather is perfect here right now and we aren't freezing or burning or too hot to cook so I'll be on my way to a good nights sleep so I can fish all day tomorrow.

With all the freeways closed how would we get there? I really feel bad for all the people who lost their homes. It finally got me to get out the camera and update my household inventory pictures. It was about 85 here today but no wind. It still makes me nervous when all the fire bugs come out.

Hope everyone down in socal stays safe.

OMG!! I didn't know it was THAT bad!! I knew there was a fire in Santa Barbara....but.
Oh!! I am so sorry! It's hard to think of paradise having flaws like that!

I was just watching the news about all the folks forced out of their homes. I'm sorry that there is so much devastation and hope for the safety of our CF friends.

I'm pretty sure we're all safe. At least the regulars are, none of us live in those areas. It's awful, just awful. We live 15 miles from the nearest fire and you cannot imagine the smell outside. We went out front just now and it smells like everyone is burning a wood stove. Really scary!

We actually had a small brush fire less than a mile from our house today. No danger but sure made me think about what I would throw in the car to leave with.

Hot windy smoky and ashy now. Rain would be a very good (but unfortunately unlikely) thing right now.

It is a very sad situation for those in the fires today.

After seeing the news and all the fires, I too will stop complaining about 30 degrees and snowflurries.

Shall I do a rain dance for the CA folks? Stay safe and may the winds die down and the heat leave you.

Phew Denise, I didn't realize that you lived on the ocean side of the area, that must have been really scary!
We were on standby for evac when I was a kid. We began loading the car and with each 5 min reprieve, we would run in and grab more stuff to add. Thankfully we never had to leave, but that memory will always remain with me!

Hey Peppi, definitely send some of that cool air down here, but leave the blizzards at home! LOL

Woke up to smoke and ash in my house and outside, and I'm far away. It's bad. Time to round up donations and supplies for those who have lost their homes.

Although we don't live in a fire prone area, I have told my kids to give thought to what they would grab (school backpacks) and keep all their important files uploaded on the net.

I wish all those in S. CA the best. We had fires all around us all summer long. We had two that came very close, less then 5 miles away. We had smoke and ash covering everything for weeks. I had things ready to pack and put in the back of the car if it got closer. This is the closest we have ever had a fire.

It is the weird weather pattern we have had for the last couple of years. Each year we are having a drought with very high temperatures like what we are having now. I have lived on the Central Coast for 22 years and the heat wave we are having now is not normal.

I've been thinking of the California CF'ers. I didn't know where you all live in relation to the fires. I have nephews that live near/in LA, in some valley, but I don't know exactly, not being at all familiar with L.A.. I'm going to call my sister to find out how they're doing.

As for what to prepare on a hot day, what about a nice cold soup? I like Gazpacho when it's really hot outside.

It's 77 degrees here at 10AM, due to be 88 high.

Yesterday I drove to downtown L.A. for table tennis. Traffic was terrible, the air was bad. When we got home there were ashes all over the kitchen counter and miniblinds. I cleaned up and we closed up the house. Later we went out to eat at Musha and when we left there, the car was covered in white ash.

I have friends in Yorba Linda, Anaheim Hills and Corona. Those are all "ex-urbs" - outermost suburbs built on canyon ridges. If you see the aerial shots you see that everything is yellow and dry. A tinderbox.

We don't know what to do today - air is smoky and ashy. Not for doing anything outdoors.

Too hot to cook.
