cat didn't have BM

Hi there. I am beginning to get a little concerned about one of my cats. He is about 4 yrs old and an indoor only cat. He usually has a bowel movement every afternoon. I can tell when they are his and not my other cats because he scratches everywhere... walls, door, floor...but in the box so he never covers it up. I clean the boxes every day and do not think I saw his "pile" yesterday. He has not had one so far today. He's an orange tabby, not long haired, and of course is beginning to shed a bit. I have given him 2 doses of Laxatone for fur balls (I assume is a laxitive). I do not feel any bulges in him, no bad gas, ears are normal temp, no unusual behavior, eating, drinking, urinating, and picking on the other cat, everything is normal. Does this warrant an emergency appointment or can we see what happens in the next coulpe days? Anyone ever hear of a cat being constipated for a day or two?

Cats can certainly become constipated, but if they do, they will typically be seen straining in the litterbox repeatedly and may also become inappetant. I'd just keep an eye on your boy and make sure his behavior and appetite remain normal. It may be that you'll start finding his "presents" behind your couch or in your closet instead of in the litterbox.

Laurie is right...you would see him straining in the litterbox if he were really constipated. I would continue to give him the laxitone or petromalt everyday for a few more days. In the meantime, you could call your vet to see if perhaps a stool softener may be called for to move things along.

My late cat (elderly with kidney failure) suffered from chronic constipation, and was on all kinds of laxitves, including Laxitone 3-4 times a day! He would go for 8 days before he would be straining and not eating (it sounds crazy, but I kept a 'poop diary' file on the computer).

Does your cat eat wet food? You might try giving him a little pure pumpkin puree mixed in...about 1/2 oz a day to give him a little more fiber.

I just have to report back...And I agree, Ann is the BOMB DIGGITY! I posted yesterday, and then basically flew around until I had to leave at 3:30 to my Baseball Concession stand for the night..so I didn't get to come back to the thread. I'm glad Ann had her proto type, to share with you guys! My husband wanted to know all about the stuff on the table. (see above..no time to put away and why would I want to?) LOL He thinks the glasses are so cool...And kept picking up the cutting board and rubbing it! LOL He and Kellan (my middle one) decided that the Strawberry Shortcake should be SERVED on the placemats right away! And when I told my HB(Honey Bunny) that the "shortcake" was made with her scones...He said.."ooh yeah..I know those scones"..... So at some point this weekend (if I get a moment) I've got to make strawberry shortcake, with Ann's scones... Ann, the next time you want to send me a parcel..just drive it down...I'd love to sit and chat!

I found this on the discussion thread about holiday decorating Posted by roarah I store my ornaments in Christmas decorative boxes and when they are emptied, after ornaments are on the tree, I put them around the skirt like presents:) Super easy and when it is time to take the ornaments down again all the storage boxes are right there for me! And from tobyt on the cooking forum I think it came from the Cake Central website. When you are making cut out cookies that require you to refrigerate the dough before rolling it out, roll the dough out between two pieces of parchment or wax paper before you put it in the fridge. The soft dough rolls much easier and never cracks. Once you have your sheets of dough rolled out, stack them on a cookie sheet and refrigerate until they are firmed up. I took it one step further, and had my husband cut me strips of wood about 18" long, 1" wide and 1/4" thick. He also made me a set in 1/8" thickness. I lay these on either side of the dough and run the rolling pin over them, giving me perfectly consistent thickness. terriks, That's a great link with so many clever ideas. Now if only I could remember to do those things.

I think Ashley has zeroed in on the essence of the issue: an opportunity to teach a lesson about 'hearsay', or 'gossip', as opposed to eavesdropping. In reading all the responses that go back & forth on trying to determine exactly what constitutes 'eavesdropping' or who should be blamed, I agree that it's a very ambiguous issue. We all, as fully grown adults, basically 'know' when we're straining to overhear something, and even if it's technically 'wrong', we all know we *sometimes* do it anyway. Or we *have* done it, at least once, even as fully-grown adults. So it's really hard to guarantee that you will be able to do anything to 100% fully prevent a kid from listening in... especially if you have a conversation where you know he's around and could possibly walk in at any second or perhaps overhear. So I agree that in Ceph's case, it wasn't really anyone's fault ---neither Ceph for not fully realizing at that moment how utterly fascinating & tantalizing adult discussions can be to a kid or A____ for being a curious kid--- but that adults should be a bit more careful, and kids should have it explained to them that they may at times overhear things out of context that they are best not to repeat because they can accidentally distort the truth and end up really hurting someone without meaning to. And that they wouldn't like it one little bit if the tables were turned and it happened to them! Maybe make up a hypothetical scenario, using some humorously exaggerated details, wherein A_____ becomes the unfortunate victim of an unchecked rumor spread by mis-heard hearsay. Like for example: "A_____, let's say after I dropped you off one morning at school I *just so happened* to overhear some very cute girls saying 'A____ looks like such a STEAMBOAT in his red-and-white sweater!" And then what if I told some other kids, and soon everyone at school thought that? Then what if I much later found out that those girls had REALLY said "A_____ looks like such a DREAMBOAT in his red-and-white sweater!"? Wouldn't YOU prefer that I'd made sure I'd checked with the girls before I told a bunch of other people that you resemble a big, slow, square-ish BOAT?" So that he gets the point but in a non-harsh way and you both can giggle about it at the end.

It is so cool! I wish had been more aware that this was happening instead of watching the gawdawful coverage of the Olympics. Not the athletes or the events, just NBC's coverage of them.. I think this is an amazing feat by NASA. Send them a gold medal. Nevertheless, I sometimes wonder if all those billions of dollars might be better used here on Earth.

Sorry, I have to ask. How close do you watch? Maybe the other cats go after he does and bury his poop for him. Or maybe he learned from the other cats and is burying it himself.

I can understand that it might be difficult for someone in a multi cat household who is away from home during the day to observe the situation as closely as I did. Since either my husband and I are home during the day, even with two cats, it was pretty easy to see who was going and who wasn't because one cat weighed 10 lbs more than the other...and eliminated accordingly! So the answer is,yes, I was able to moniter the situation closely. When Max's constipation became a chronic problem, his buddy had passed on so he became an only cat for his last 2 years.

Prior to Max's kidney failure and mega-colin, he would occasionally get constipated from hairball issues (he was a longhair), but a few more hits of Laxitone or Petromalt would do the trick within a few days.

Your cat is young...and not likely to have the same issues that elderly cats might have. Its been a few days, and this is a weekend, so if you are home, you should be able to observe who is leaving what in the litter box(s). Has he gone yet? If not, I would consider calling the vet on Mon.

Hi all, thanks for the feedback. Yes I can tell whos is whos. He is bigger than the other cat and the other cat wont go in the same box if there is an uncovered pile. LOL don't think I would either. I do clean them out at least daily or as soon as I see or smell that one is soiled. (I work at home). I called the vet yesterday and of course as soon as I hung up the phone he was scratching around the box. I have never been so happy to see a big stinkey pile! FYI the vet did recomend to continue the Laxatone and to try some Pumpkin and bring him in Monday if he hadn't gone.I got the same great advise from all of you! Thanks!
