Test results are in...

Cancer was stage 1A....meaning the lowest grade of cancer. There was no sign of cancer cells in any of the biopsies, so it sounds like it was literally contained in the one polyp!!! This means....

I AM CANCER FREE!!!

Chad, My native soil PH is 6.5....ok lets be honest the native soil is not soil it is snow white sand, looks the stuff in an hourglass. Sand does not have a PH as it is not soluble so it is the small amount of organics in it that give me the 6.5. To the sand I add a 2cf bag of pine fines per plant and maybe 1/10 of a bale of peat. Use maybe 25%? of the native sand by volume. I don't want a deep hole just maybe 6" deep. I do want the area amended to be wide. I prefer bare root plants but potted work also. With potted some of the rootball will be above ground level and that is ok. Once planted they get 10" of mulch around them. It is just tree service trims done for our electric company. I am lucky that the director of the electric company is a neighbor so have a virtually inexhaustible supply delivered for free. In a perfect world I do all the above a year in advance, in the case of the ravens it will have been done 2 years in advance:) and in the case of the Indigo crisps 4? years in advance. I am not adding more space for BB so what fits in the 3 beds is what fits. I add no sulfur as I acidify the irrigation water. The soil PH in the 3 BB beds is 5 to 5.5. In the spring it is sometimes a bit higher as I have overhead freeze protection on all the beds and that water is just straight high bicarbonate PH 7.8 well water. Just depends how many times the system was needed, this year just 1 night. I just use a bit more acid and it takes care of the bicarbonates.

so my results are in from the lab. We have about 2000sq/ft. It's at least 20 years old KBG/Fescue mix in Northern VA. any tips/recommendations? Since I need more (K) I was thinking of using Scotts Winterizer in Sept, Oct and Nov. I am open to Organic alternatives as well, where can I find some? I've also begun adding Milorganite to the mix to help with the organic matter. there is also quite a bit of thatch, hoping that manual aeration will help this Fall. Qhat should I put down after, I heard I can disturb weed seeds by doing that.

I'm very happy and relieved for you. Congratulations!!! I'm probably one of the worst at waiting for test results; I just hate it. I'm so, so glad you've got your results. About the parent thing, others have already given you so many wise words. I'll add this. I think having regrets after a parent dies is to be expected, whether the relationship is bad or good. I definitely had regrets after my father's death about our relationship. I didn't understand him, and we didn't have much in common. Plus, he had anger issues. Large ones. I do get why he was angry, and he had a right to be angry. But HIS children didn't deserve his anger. I have a great relationship with my mother, but I'll still have regrets when she's gone, mostly about not making more of an effort to spend time with her. A friend (who had lost a child and her parents) told me once that she knew she had loved her children unconditionally and had done everything she possibly could for them, so she had no regrets concerning them. She said that she did regret not having spent more time with her parents and not having done more for them while she still could have.

Looks great so far! That's actually much better than I would expect with your initial soil, so I'd say you're doing an excellent job. Some spot seeding will be necessary, but it always is. With fescue, in your area, you can dormant seed over the winter, or even a very early spring seeding. They'll develop fast enough to cause minimal problems during summer in your locale, which isn't exactly the hottest in the nation. Mosses are very weak, and don't tolerate drier conditions and sunlight very well. With luck, they'll go away by themselves next spring. Nor can they compete with the lawn, so they'll die if the mosses colonize there. If you mean that rock wall, they can be pressure-washed off , and a tiny bit of soap won't hurt to get rid of them. Most moss killers are iron sulfate, which will stain the wall, so you don't want to use those (they're great for in the lawn, however). Mosses are very susceptible to even small amounts of baking soda (the sodium is not a moss' friend). In small amounts, this won't harm the lawn, but I'd try to keep amounts low. A few tablespoons in a gallon of warm water, with soap, and use a scrub brush to scrub at the moss. It'll die in a week or so, and you can then scrub off the remainder with soapy water. Zinc or copper based moss killers shouldn't be used as they'll do strange things to the soil. While zinc is less of a problem, copper in excess will kill any plant that tries to grow in the soil and it doesn't wash out easily. So my general take on these is "avoid."

Vickey, I am picturing you doing the HAPPY HAPPY DANCE, so thankful for the good news. I did the very same as you about 5 years ago, I kept asking the surgeon tell me over and over NO CANCER. I was still drowsy from the surgery and was wanting to make sure i was understanding. Had been in the cancer center for lots of test, but when they did the surgery, it was wonderful news to my ears. I felt numb during those first few months of not knowing. So very happy for you. SUCH GOOD NEWS
