Me? Never liked gingersnaps UNTIL I was in my 60's.

TODAY, was in World Market and they were sampling gingersnaps.

Wow, so thin, and melt in your mouth. Devine!

Always loved gingerbread, especially, when mother made hers and with a lemon sauce to go on top.

Those were the days!

Mothers brand made some wonderful Ginger Bread Boy gingersnaps sold in a sack a few years ago at Christmas. Our little grandson loved them, so I have looked for them ever since and not found them.

Usually I can pass on gingersnaps, but these were great. Will check out our World Market this week, Glenda. Thanks for the heads up.

Hello all, We have had a blown glass vessel sink in a powder room for over 10 years - one of the first out there. ...it still has a "wow factor" and has not become dated. ...however, if it ever did, we could replace it in 5 minutes with something else. Why? The hole in the countertop is just 4". Not a specific shape dictated by whatever drop-in or undermount sink you are using (this makes replacing later a lot more difficult). We also have two teak wood sinks in our master bath and have been living with those for 4 years. They work well for us. We find that we actually have more counter space with the vessel sinks than "regular" style. These sinks are pretty cool. Obviously there are some strong opinions here, but having lived with vessel sinks for so long, for us, we have been very happy with our decisions. Good luck!

Rich Fruit Cake There's a lot of ingredients but you basically just mix them all together! Makes 8" round cake or 7" square. (I have also used this recipe to make a 9" round cake with excellent results) 1 lb 5 oz currants 6 oz raisins 11 oz sultanas/golden raisins 6 oz candied citrus peel 5 oz candied cherries, washed and cut into 4 pieces 1 oz sliced almonds 1 oz almond meal/flour 1 1/2 teaspoons very strong coffee 2 level teaspoons spice mix (your own preference but I use cocoa,cinnamon, ground ginger, allspice and nutmeg) Pinch of salt Zest and juice 1 small lemon 10 oz soft dark brown sugar or molasses (I use 1/2 of each) 10 oz butter 12 oz self rising flour 3 fl oz dark rum 6 large eggs Extra 1 fl oz dark rum for brushing over cake Line cake pan sides and base with parchment paper and outside of pan sides and base with brown paper (using natural string to secure) Heat oven to 250F In large bowl add spices, coffee, almonds, salt, lemon zest, and juice to fruit. Mix well then add rum and leave to soak for at least 24 hours or up to 1 week. I stir it once per day. The aroma is wonderful! In a second bowl, beat butter and sugar until pale and creamy. Beat eggs one at a time and add to butter mix, adding some flour with each egg. Reserve a small amount of flour to coat fruit by stirring it through fruit mixture. Gradually add butter/egg mix to fruit mix and stir until well mixed. Scrape into cake pan making a very slight depression in the center. Cover lightly with circle of parchment paper with small hole cut in center. Bake in pre-heated 250F oven just above center, until an inserted skewer comes out clean, approx 3 hours. (My 9" cakes have taken up to 5 hours!!) When cooked leave in oven for a few minutes with the door open. Remove from oven, brush over 1 fl oz of rum over top of cake. Leave in pan until totally cold, or overnight in a cool room. Remove from pan, wrap completely in parchment paper, then in foil. Store for minimum 4 weeks to mature. I brush with a little extra rum or brandy every 6 weeks if I store the cake for many months. The cake for this Christmas is over one year old.

Okay, so I'm nervous. My name says it all - I'm always repainting something because I get it wrong the first time or two. So I'm not sure if I feel like painting and repainting a 5x6 area of my kitchen wall. But I had two decorators visit from Pottery Barn (you know how they do that free consulation, well they did it for my house and it was great!). Anyhow, one of them planted this idea to make a magnetic chalk board and now I just can't get it out of my head. They said to make it huge, as in the whole wall and that is how I got the idea. But I'm still nervous I won't like enough and spend a lot of money and time on the paint. (this stuff ain't cheap and a 5x6 area will take a good amount of quarts considering everyone says you have to put between 9-10 coats on). Sochi - your door looks beautiful and perfectly sized. The question is would you want something 3x as big? But then I got the idea of really making my own chalk board to hang and then remove when I'm done having it in my kitchen. I'm thinking of using a 4x8 masonite board, painting it with the two paints (magnetic/chalk) and then framing it with nice large molding. Then when I tire of it, we will bring it down to hang in the finished basement. I say finished because I'm dreaming that my basement might be finished in a couple of years. The only thing currently finished about the basement is the mess that has accumulated. Any thoughts on this idea of hanging a large 5'x6' framed chalk board?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. roseabbey: You know until I was pulling the photos together for the post I hadn't viewed them as the 2 distinct groupings. It was all just floating around in my head. Doing that really does show up just how over-the-top the chandelier is. The bowl continues to grow on me. dkitchenreno & faleash: Good to hear from 2 that are using the bowls as your choice. I think in all the photos I viewed there were probably less than a handful that did go that route. I'll call you trail blazers! :) mikeandbarb: I thought of the cleaning issue but not of the breakage issue. I'll check in to whether it is a standard size bowl for the feasibility of replacement if that should ever happen. So, thank you one and all. You have helped me tremendously to get off the fence and get it done so I can cross another item off the list.

Glenda, I still make gingerbread with lemon sauce over the holidays, using my grandmother's favorite recipe. Everyone loves it and it makes the house smell awesome.

I don't like ginger snaps (although I wouldn't say "hate"), but I do love their close cousins, molasses crinkles. These are soft, spice filled cookies that are great with a glass of ice cold milk.

I bought a bag of gingersnaps from Dollar Tree, in the fall.
Made pumpkin dip.

Now the combination of the two was sooooooo good!

Never had a tender gingersnap. They're always like rocks and even as a kid I feared breaking a tooth on them. There's some soft iced ginger cookies at SA that were great and the local grocery store occasionally has ginger cookies that are great.

Pumpkin dip sounds wonderful! How did you make it? I still have a can of pumpkin (I heard it is in short supply due to the fall rains where most canning pumpkins are grown).

I believe you can get similar extra thin gingersnaps at Ikea ...or Elegant Farmer (which is by me!)

I half the recipe cause it makes a lot!

Pumpkin dip

1 container (16 ounce size) frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 box (5 ounce size) instant vanilla pudding mix
1 can (15 ounce size) solid pack pumpkin
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

Directions:

In a large bowl, mix together instant vanilla pudding mix, pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice. Fold in the thawed frozen whipped topping.

Chill in the refrigerator until serving

I also have served them with honey pretzel sticks, but LOVE the gingersnaps!

My husband uses gingersnap cookies in his sauerbraten gravy. We always have a bag in the freezer. I may steal one or two. Love that spice tang!

The Triple Ginger Gingersnaps from Trader Joe's are awesome.

I love the "hard as a rock" kind that come in a box at the grocery store. They're great for dunking in cold milk or hot tea. They're so spicy and yummy.

I also love the soft-ish ones I make at Christmas.

Love gingersnaps, the spicier the better. Growing up the only store bought cookie we ever had in the house was Pantry Cookies. They were big round flat gingersnaps. My dad would put a smear of butter on them for us and we would dunk them in our tea. I am thrilled whenever I find them in a grocery store nowadays and I still eat them with butter and dunk them in my tea. Costco carries a brand of gingersnaps that are heart shaped and are good too. When my niece had morning sickness she would munch on those cookies.

I make a recipe for ginger chocolate cookies from the Martha Stewart cookie magazine at Christmas time that are a big hit.
