How many pictures can I take with 512 card?

I'm trying to figure this out. I have a 6.1 megapixil camera. So far I've taken about 300 pictures. I am wondering how many the card will hold. I've read that it depends on the resolution of the picture you are taking, or how you set your camera or whatever. I don't make any changes with the camera, just point and shoot. In looking at some of the pictures I've taken I see they are different sizes - 2.3 MG, 1.3Mb etc...

I'm confused and concerned my card will be full right in the middle of a great shot in Yosemite.

Ginny, I could never get a straight answer either, whenever I asked this question. I can tell you what I have learned from experience, and hope it helps you.

First let me say that I would DEFINITELY buy another card or two, perhaps one with more storage, such as 1 gigabyte, that way you will feel comfortable knowing that you have many more pictures yet to take.

Secondly, my camera lets me know how many pictures I have taken and how many I have left to take, and this number changes since some pictures will take less space than others.

Next, I would recommend taking pictures on a higher resolution so that you can enlarge them later if desired without losing detail in the photo. If you are taking a picture of something that you know you will not make an enlargement out of, you can set your camera to a lower megapixel setting to save space on the card. Personally, I leave mine set at 5 megapixels, that way I am always ready to take a picture that I might want to enlarge.

I set my camera to take photos at about 5 megapixels. On a 512 card, I can get(on average), about 230 pictures. At 2.3 or 1.3 megapixels, you will be able to get many more pictures, possibly 2 or three times more, but there is NO exact way of determining exactly how many.

The reason for this is that some pictures, even if they are set at the same resolution level, will take up less space than others. For example, my camera showed that I had room for only 9 more photos. I took almost forty before it actually ran out of space, probably since I was taking pictures at night, of the moon.

Thank you for your explanation of this subject. Before going on vacation I did format the card so I had an empty slate to work with. That was the first time I had formatted it so I am learning and doing new things. I will keep your reply in my file and refer to it as I try to really understand my camera. Thanks again,

I've had one major card for several years - almost always pay off balance due in full before the due date, resulting in no interest paid. I recently took out another at low rate on transfers for about nine months and planned to use it to pay for stock purchase, but haven't bought for a while, so the 1.9% rate period is winding down. The Line of Credit rate was about 4.25% a while ago, but then a new prime rate came out, lower ... but they tacked on a surcharge of 1.5% due to the economic slump, resulting in my rate becoming 5.0%, if I wanted to use it. Hi again Angela ID, What's the possibility of persuading your local financial institution (bank, credit union) to give you a loan to cover the balance owing on the card?? Their rate, even on an unsecured loan, will be a lot lower, I'm sure. Also, if you have a GIC, CD, bond, etc. ... including stocks' or mutual funds' certificates, an insurance policy, if you have "whole life" with built-up cash value, using them as collateral to undergird the loan will earn you a much reduced interest rate, as well, I expect. When you can build up some cash as a cushion, then use it to buy some investment assets, if you leave them with the bank/credit union as collateral for a Line of Credit, your rate will be quite low, almost certainly. Try to arrange one with no set-up fee, and no fee for periods in which it lies unused, even for substantial periods. I've done that, and when I have an emergency develop, I use the card to cover it, then draw on the Line of Credit to pay off the balance on the credit card just before due date, to avoid interest. I won't pay an annual fee for a credit card, either. Good wishes for getting that debt eliminated before too long, and at as low a rate of interest as possible, in the meantime. ole joyful

Once we got the light fixture down, I could see the manufacturer's name Lightcraft of California. I googled the name and found the patent application for the mechanism that attaches the globe to the stem. Now that I have that information, along with an exploded drawing of the internal mechanism, I'll be able to change the light bulbs in the future. As for the fixture itself, I found it for sale on several sites, including 1st dibs, where it had already been sold. Apparently, this 1960's fixture is very popular. Maybe because people like the look, but have not yet tried to change a burnt out bulb in ths fixture.

Ann, we have never had the lemming-like urge to join the millions of our countrymen and take to the skies for the annual jaunt to Spain, the Canaries or the Balearics. A week or two burning next to the pool, eating all day fried breakfasts and swigging cheap booze 'til daybreak do not a relaxing holiday make; to say nothing of the sheer Hell of getting through airport security. There is so much that can be discovered almost on our own doorsteps even though the weather may return us pale and shivering. My Mother had a terrible 'wander lust' and found the imposition of three children a difficult cross to bear. She always wanted to travel/escape from home and was, for two weeks each year forced to take us with her . .. my Father's business required him to work during the summer . . . at odd times she used to jump on her bike with a change of clothes and cycle around the country putting up at Youth Hostels and B&B's. My youngest brother has inherited this same 'habit' but with plenty of money and no family he is off on a whim to all parts of the world for several weeks at a time. It would be interesting to know where/how other RP'ers, or US folk in general, spend their vacations. I understand that you don't get so much time off work/annual leave as we do in the UK.

Ginny - I have 254 pictures on my 512 card - It is just over half full.

Put your card in a card reader (or maybe just hook up your camera to the computer) and go to My Computer. Find your card or camera and click on it once to highlight (but don't open). Then click on FILE in the upper left side of the screen. On the drop down menu it will have "Properties" - from that you can tell how full your card is. That will give you some idea of how much your card will hold.
