Cat lost, now found. Need help!

I have a question - unfortunately I hope none have you have experienced losing a pet (not passing away, just gone!)But, if you have, I hope you were lucky enough to find them.

On Valentines day our cat went missing. We searched and searched to no avail. Well, we found a coyote in our backwoods on a trail camera and thought for sure, that was where the cat had disappeared to. We were devastated. Well, low and behold I leave to go out this morning and I get about a mile away from home, and there's my cat, hanging out with a man in his front yard doing yard work. I flipped! I pulled in and asked if it was his, he said no but it had been around for a little while so he was feeding it, but could tell it was someones cat. So, I get out and pick her up and she was meowing rather loud. I put her in the car and headed home. I stuck her in the garage because I knew I had to get going to my appointment and when I came home I put her leash on her and took her outfront to see the dog. (Our neighbors abandoned their cat and dog and we've had them for some time) Well, she had NOTHING to do with the dog that she'd lived with for 9 years. She wouldn't even pay attention to her, and this was her best friend. She ate some food, but was no longer the loving cat I had known for so long. Do you think she is just confused? Will she ever be the cat I have known for so long? She is scared and frightened of me :( Any advice?

How old is your cat? I have heard of cat's having signs of alzheimers or dementia. I would contact your vet and see if you can get her in asap and checked out! She might be ill. Sounds like she has been on her own for over a month. She may have come in contact with some bad food or who knows what!

She is about 9.

By "my place" I assume you mean my house, not necessarily the exact place where the wall will be built. I have already moved the stones to my property. If you read the post carefully I estimated their weight based on the number or truck loads it took to move them. Also if you looked at the pictures you can see the hill I will be putting them up against. Also can you clarify what you mean by the Roman Style wall being "a crock". I usually use that word to mean someone is telling me a tall tale but I am not sure if you mean it the same way. thanks

If you are that freaked out by mice and can afford it, hire an exterminator. If you can't afford it, set some humane traps. NOT A STICKY TRAP. The sticky traps are horrible. They severely torture the trapped mice, and also torture the human that put them out, via guilt. No matter how much you hate mice, if you have never seen a mouse or other creature on a sticky trap, believe me, you don't want to. They are stuck to the glue, and are absolutely frantic, trying to escape. They end up tearing their own skin off and breaking bones in the process, adding to the agony. They finally give up out of exhaustion, dehydration, and injury, and death comes slowly and painfully. I hate rodents, and certainly would FREAK if they were inside my house, but I would never subject any creature to a death like that. By humane traps, I mean one of two options: A snap trap that will kill them quickly, or a trap that will allow them to crawl inside but not be able to escape. Then you have to take them somewhere and release them. Probably not high on your list ;) An exterminator will do this for you. But again, there is a cost associated. The advice given about finding the spots where they are entering is very good. Mice can get inside via a hole as little as 1/2" wide. Here is a link that might be useful: Google: glue trap death

Assuming they hired a professional designer to do the model living room, what I see is that under the best of circumstances, that living room is awkwardly set up. In the model room, there is space for three, maybe 4 people to sit. Only one seat directly faces the TV set. Look at the furniture in that room. One small sofa or loveseat. One armchair. One TV stand. One end table. One large coffee table that was chosen to fill up the empty space in the center of the room to make it look more furnished. Imagine that room without the coffee table and it starts to look a lot like the OPÃ¯Â¿Â½s room. There are three lamps, one of which appears to block part of the TV. And then at least 4 plants, to make the room appear more furnished and welcoming. I think they did a wonderful job making that room look open and inviting, and hiding the more obvious flaws in the design of the room. The roomÃ¯Â¿Â½s layout simply doesnÃ¯Â¿Â½t function well. Either you have the sofa on the wall in the model room, and then you have a hard time watching TV, or you put the sofa on the window wall so you can see the TV set, and then you lose the view out the windows and have an awkward layout. OP, itÃ¯Â¿Â½s not you. ItÃ¯Â¿Â½s the room. Working with the furniture you have, the first thing IÃ¯Â¿Â½d do is take out the two small chairs. They donÃ¯Â¿Â½t work with the rest of the furniture. Then IÃ¯Â¿Â½d try to put the sofa on the wall where it is in the model room, and buy a table top TV swivel stand so that you could easily watch TV from there. Move the blue chair to the same position as the woven chair in the model picture and place an end table between the sofa and the chair. Down the line, look for a coffee table similar to the one in the model pictureÃ¯Â¿Â½glass or Lucite to keep the space looking open, and slightly oversized to fill the space better. And maybe a smaller unit to hold the TV.

In answer to the orginal post question, an 8 year old cat with symptoms of throid issues is fairly common. Cats are living longer and now have diseases associated with age. You need to start thinking of a treatment route or your cat will not survive this disease. It's also uncomfortable for the cat to have a constantly racing heart, constipation issues and the other associated aspects. Treatment is either daily pills (methamazole, ie: tapazole) or radioactive iodine treatment (one time and its cured). My recommendation would be the radioactive iodine. If money is the issue, treat with pills and save the money until you can pay for the iodine treatment. Untreated thyroid disease --and even long term treatment with Methamazole -- progresses to kidney failure, enlarged heart (cardiomyopathy) and ultimately thrombosis problems - all of which will eventually kill your cat. Regarding a diet for a cat who is in kidney failure, the cat needs to be on a LOW protein diet - which eliminates 99% of all store brand cat food. If you continue to feed protein enriched foods to your cat, you are effectively killing him/her quickly. The main food of choice is K/D by Prescriptives (Hills brand and NOT on the recall list). Your cat will feel 100% better by eating the right food for this illness. Also, if you can, switch the water to DISTILLED water - definitely not tap water. Kidney disease is also a terminal illness, but if you treat it effectively, your cat will live a pleasant life for the time they have remaining. I know from experience as my 18yr old cat has both of these issues, but is content and doing very well.

I'd probably call the vet, but when a cat has had a traumatic experience (sounds like she may have been "picked up" & then dropped off or abandoned), she often is very prickly for quite some time.

Years ago, I went on vacation & left my cat Cinders, who was just about glued to me every day, at home but in the care of a roommate.

When my roommate picked me up at the airport, she said Cinders had missed me, had cried every day, etc.

When I walked in the door, Cinders looked at me, turned her back, & stalked out of the room!

It took a couple of weeks for her to get in a good mood with me again.

& that was just me going off for a week & leaving her in her own territory with a roomie she knew!

So I bet if you'll be very patient with your cat, & shower her with love, she'll come around.

Are you absolutely certain that the cat you found IS your cat? Does your cat have unique physical characteristics that make it possible to positively ID her?

If you are 100% certain that she is your cat, then it sounds like she's just very traumatized and needs time to decompress in a quiet, safe environment in your home for a while. Let her regain her psychological equilibrium in her own way and in her own time. Don't try to force interactions on her, either with the other animals or with your human family members.

Be patient and keep everything very low key with her, and she'll most likely come around in time.

Why would you put your cat in the garage? Didn't she live in the house? If you have a leash for her she must have been an inside cat that you took good care of and did not allow to roam. Something doesn't add up here.

Don't worry...sometimes DH will go out of town for 2 weeks, when he gets back our cat has nothing to do with him for a few days. We always say that the cat is mad about DH leaving. And believe me, our cat loves DH. Your cat will get use to you and your surroundings again.

Definately have her checked by your vet and give her plenty of time to readjust. She should come around. I have a 2 year old cat and we have just moved and he is acting scared of every little noise, but he is slowly coming around. It seems like some cats take longer than others to readjust.
