Entry Lantern opinions please!

I just can't make up my mind and would love opinions. We will have two lantern as you walk into our entry...one upon entering and another as you keep walking past the stairs before you hit a cased opening into the main area of the house. They line up with the front door...you walk under them to enter get to the main areas of the house. So they must match. My goal is to have a beautiful, comfortable, casual home. We have ten foot ceilings downstairs.

When I met with the lighting person, I decided on these vintage iron lanterns:

I just came across these this weekend:

Regal French Chandelier : Decorative Lighting : Wisteria (clipped to polyvore.com)

I like both and can't decide. Opinions?

You can't go wrong with either lantern IMO, but I have a preference for the first for a more simple, casual setting. Can't wait to see pics of your home!

I like the square one. It seems simple, but elegant. Slightly feminine.

The round one has more of a "I AM THE KING!!!" look to it. ;) I just looked back at the name and apparently, it's the "Regal" light.. lol.

I would use the square one in my home...

If you got the proportions right in your mock-up, I don't think they are too big at all, and think they look nice. I think the bigger, wider trim around your door allows you to use bigger lamps like that as opposed to a door with just narrow trim. Sue

I think that you should only consider sight lines. In your case everyone will be coming in the door and presumably looking dead ahead. you'll get the most bang (since I assume you'll have some fabulous fixture in your entry) if you centre the lights on the door. Also a centred light viewed through the transom windows above a front door is a great warm greeting from the street (if your door is surrounded by glass). I went through the build process recently myself (moved in two months ago) trust me, you can't over think this stuff. There are tiny details all over the place now that I wish I had given more consideration. They don't spoil the experience of my new house, it's not that bad, but they do draw my eye in over and over and over. One of those niggling issues is my dining room light fixture which is centred on the dimensions of the room per plan, but does not account for the fact that the dining room opens to both a hall and my foyer so visual appears much bigger.

Yes! Welcome to the club. The door is a nightmare. When I see homes being build with these doors I almost want to run in and tell people to change the door before it’s too late. Looks good from the street, but a total disaster. Mine gets so hot in the summer, I laugh about it and tell people I grill on it. I had rust stains after only a few years, had to repaint. Get condensation in the winter, but i seal from the inside on super cold days - it helps. Actually in the process of buying some weather proofing for the door now and hope it might help Some more. It's already in Design Dilemma, so I think we can manage! ;) I am, however, not clear what your question is. You could wait for your preferred light to come in, and have an electrician come and install it then, using a floor lamp in the meantime. You could get a light you don't like quite as much. I agree with Andreadeg. They are both really nice, but If you are going for a more casual look, I would go with the first one.

They are both nice, but I prefer the first as being more adaptable to various settings. The second seems more old world European, with the 'crown' look that was everywhere a few years ago - stamped on pillows, crowns as accessories...

I like the first one. Are there supposed to be 3 pictures? I only see 2, but it looks like there should be one in the middle.

We have similar tastes. I like both, and without knowing your house it's hard to choose. Any particular style?

Let's see...We're in New Orleans. More than likely, we're doing Heart Pine floors (haven't decided on the stain. I'm painting our 8' two panel doors a charcoal gray, using a light greige on the walls in the main space and a silver sage in the entry. Squared stairs with wood balusters, painted white, stained treads, white risers. White kitchen. White trim throughout. Using a lot of soft blue green in other rooms. Will have punches of color throughout.

I think you guys are right about the first one. I'm not EVER clicking on that Urban Electric one! I know their prices!! LOL! They're way more than Circa. They had an awesome aqua lantern I spotted in a magazine. It was several thousand for just one. I was so disappointed!!

In New Orleans, you can certainly use the very french one. The Copper Sculptures people also make replicas of french quarter lanterns IIRC.

I prefer not to have spam in my lanterns. Oy!

I prefer the first one, especially when you will use a pair of them. I would like the second one best with just one. And then, if you wanted to continue with the regal theme you could use the Schoenbeck Princess chandelier in your dining room -- it has a tiara motif. ;)

Thank you all so much for your responses!! I'm sticking with my first instinct...especially since there will be two in the space. I'm excited!
