Desperately seeking backsplash ideas

My kitchen/renovation was completed two years ago (thanks all to the kitchen forum help back then) and we are finally at the point that we are ready to get a backsplash. I don't know where to start. One thing is we have a pass thru as well as a microwave above the stove. I am trying to figure out what we would want to do for a backsplash in those areas. The cabinets are a deep red cherry color and the granite is a golden oak. Part of me likes the neutral colors for the backsplash - staying in the gold neutral tones with a tumbled/travertine but I also want to bring out the color of the countertops (has gold with deep burgundy spots, some light greenish streaks)

Any help on color, style, and material for the backsplash would be appreciated. I have looked at the finished kitchen and I always feel like everyone else has the amazing hood or the backsplash behind the stove or sink to make a focal point and our setup isn't really designed that way.

I have an over the range microwave, and I'm doing the same thing there as I am on the rest of the backsplash..why not? I also think the pass thru can be done the same as the rest. You would just put the bull nose kind of tile (assuming you use tiles) at the opening. no?

Oh, I'd bring out the green and get some color in there.

And yeah - you can just do the same level all the way around. Maybe do a mosaic above the stove for an accent / focal point.

The dark will make a very cave like effect in your kitchen. There are very few very dark backsplashes on this forum and I think that it is because it is just too tricky to get it right. My vote is still to go lighter. Maybe a different version of the ones you have? Or maybe the glass isn't right for what you are looking for. Take a deep breath. What has happened to you is something that many of us here can relate to. You chose your cabinets and then the counter without a vision of what your backsplash was going to be. This does not make the process impossible, it is just harder. I think you need to take a break. How about painting the backsplash for now? You might also get a feel for the color that can work and then mimic that in the tile. You do not NEED a backsplash to have a functioning kitchen. So, take your time with this.

I'm the party pooper, I guess. I suggest you do not pick the tile for the back splash until the cabinets and counters are in. You will not believe the difference it makes. When the counter is horizontal and bigger, it will look much more different than that little sample. The lighting in your space is different than out in the tile shops. Also the cabinets when installed will give your space a different look. There is nothing lost by waiting. There have been several GW members who made their decision based on a door and granite sample only to be disappointed later. In our future house, I plan on just painting that drywall area and then deciding. I know I probably will want to go with the arabesques again, but I really want to see it before making that decision. But, while you are out there looking, check out the Mandala Tiles, especially their Sinu collection. The tile is subtle but really does have some depth to it without stealing the show. I know srg215 used it in her kitchen in the color: Stingray. Gorgeous. Good Luck!

cawaps- My tiles above are from Syzygy. They are located in Silver City New Mexico and I am in Albuquerque. I loved using local tile makers and they have a huge selection of colors and textures! They are relatively expensive though but worth every penny. I also considered using Fireclay tiles but the color I wanted was not one of the ones with a lot of variation.

eam44, yes the paint is like a creamy color with what looks like yellow tint to me. It’s darker than an actual eggshell but much lighter than butter. I was thinking of changing the whole kitchen to a light gray that matches the cabinet and granite. And then the backsplash area would either be the same color or an accent color. Theresa, thanks for sharing those wallpaper examples! Hadn’t thought of that. Below is the wall opposite the room. I’d like to put a pan rack, shelf, or something similar on the wall to the right of the door.

oops..I meant to say Glass tiles. I am partial to glass. I think they are so striking, but you gotta be careful not to over do it with too much definitely color....IMO

Have you looked at Oceanside Glass Tile; I love their stuff and it will really spark up your kitchen.

You didn't mention a budget though and it is a little pricey.

Look around their site, I'm sure you will find something that will pull your colors.

I do like the glass tiles. I have to try to get samples of some of the colors. It would probably add that wow factor. As for a budget - I haven't gotten that far. My DH likes to joke that if it is between two items, I have an instinct to always like the more expensive choice. One question - with glass tiles would you still have a mosaic or probably not?

How about some subway glass tiles in a sagey kind of color with a garnet colored glass of some type interpersed(?) throughout as accents? Keep in mind this suggestion is given after consuming a glass of wine!

So what I think remodelfla is REALLY saying is she thinks maybe intersperse with an "accent" of pinot noir or merlot or cabernet or even, if it's in your price range, a little "splash" of REALLY good chateau neuf du pape ... :)

And after a few glasses of wine, you won't even notice the price...

(I vote for a little "glitz" with a beautiful glass tile, too. Maybe muted, soft colors if you prefer them to brighter ones, but shimmery glass.)

Love your kitchen. When we were intially considering granite, one of the slabs I really liked was the golden oak. It's beautiful with your cherry cabinets. I think a striking backsplash would really pull it all together. I think the travertine would be lovely and very traditional in appearance. Good luck.

I am going to look at glass tiles this weekend. Are there any manufacturers you would recommend? Anything I need to consider when selecting glass tiles or finding someone to install them?

I'm just going to chime in and vote for Susan Jablon mosaics. I don't know if you can see them anywhere, but you can get samples! She will do custom work if you don't find exactly what you like. Her glass tiles are really exquisite, and her prices are reasonable for glass tile.

The kitchen forum always delivers! This weekend I will go to a showroom that has the Oceanside tiles. I think the Enchantment colors are amazing. I will also look into Susan Jablon. I want to thank everyone so much for their advice.
