Faux wainscoting-How to Paint "Panel" Wall

I would like to do a faux wainscoting like the one in the picture. To save time and effort I want to use the bare wall to make the "panel". However I am having trouble on how to paint the bare wall. While my walls are not textured when I paint them using the standard roller that is made for non-textured ceilings and walls it leaves a hint of texure to it. Do I need to use a foam roller or is there something else out there that is made for this? How do I make sure the "panel" and wood trim look like wainscoting when painting?

Something similar was done in my dining room using the bare wall to make wainscoting and they somehow painted it where it was completely smooth.

Thanks!
