We used a faux wainscoting technique in our back hall. Our 1910 house has 12' ceilings. The chair rail is 5' from the floor. The base boards are 9" wide. The 1" x 4" vertical boards are spaced 22" apart. I bet we used a case of caulk before painting to make everything look solid and tight. Everything from the chair rail to the floor was painted with two coats of oil-based enamel paint. The walls were painted a cigar leaf brown. We hired a carpenter in install and paint the crown molding and corner blocks. It took a lot of time and effort, but the hall looks much more finished. You can do it! We are going to have picture frame wainscoting put in our bathroom, so I've been researching it. Looking at your pictures, I would not do it in your bathroom. You will have major problems with the bullnose corners and especially the curved wall. I can't even imagine doing it. If it were my room, I would paint over the faux painting to give the room consistency, it's too chopped up with only certain walls treated. Especially since there's no clear cut ending to the faux because of all the curved corners. Maybe a nice, long tapestry on the long wall to the left of the toilet. Maybe get someone to paint a mural on the curved wall, since hanging anything on it might be a challenge. Good luck!

You're quite right; I was redundant in my title, wasn't I? I did something similar to beadboard panelling in my last house. The tricky part was cutting out for the electrical outlets. I was so scared I'd measure it wrong. Then they stuck out farther from the wall, of course, and I had to hunt for the right longer screws. I'm glad you posted the picture, thanks, and that is just elegant. That is the type of treatment I would like to do in my LR and DR and up the staircase at the entry. I figured the staircase would be really hard as I don't know what angles to cut for the trim. Now this is what I was wondering if it could be faked by sanding the wall flat, then putting on the chair rail and the other trim. How was yours done? Is there a flat sheet attached to the lower wall first, then the trim added? Did you do it yourself? Any tips?

Please leave the kitchen bead board alone. As others have said, it's most likely original. Agree with you that the paneling in the dining room and bathroom need to go. They are not original and are fugly. Because of the age of the house, I wouldn't paint a pure white if you redo the dining room paneling but instead something with more of a cream base. It will still read white but just a bit softer. Personally though, I'd probably just do the walls in paint or even find a beautiful wallpaper. Check out Bradbury and Bradbury wallpapers. Also we do plan on painting the homemade quasi-ugly fireplace mantel (and redo the tiles with something colorful that doesnt blend with wood - yuk). From here the fireplace and tile looks original to the house. Can you take a few closeups? If the tile is original, I certainly wouldn't cover it up. People pay huge bucks to find original tile like that. The best I can tell the trim on the floor and ceiling is original but the work around the doors is sort of junky with bad stain and has a 70's feel to it. If you're talking about the trim around the kitchen window and the trim in the dining room, from here that looks to be original and I wouldn't touch it. Be very careful about painting any original woodwork as once you do, your stuck with it. Plus for those who are looking for an original house, it will lower the sale price when you go to sell. What a gorgeous house.
