Do any of you read Ree Drummonds Blog The Pioneer Woman?

She started out just writing about her life.

Now she has a cookbook out and there will soon be a movie starring Reese Witherspoon.

All you people out there with blogs....just goes to show you just never know what will happen.

I do, love her recipes. DH loves several of her cowboy recipes, especially the steak one, and he's a very fussy eater.

Wow! That's really cool. I find her amusing. I've only tried one of her recipes.....the apple dumplings but I've made them twice and both times they were a big hit. Recently I had a skinny neighbor for dinner. She's not a dessert person (probably why she's so skinny) and she absolutely loved this dessert. Do try it, you'll love it.

I do not watch PW or RR, except if it's on at the nail salon while I am there. But in defense of the somewhat ordinary type cooking, I usually come away with an inspiration. That's why I come here, why I subscribe to Serious Eats, read cookbooks, why I read the food pages in the paper and why I watch FN. I'm old enough so that I tend to slip into a rut when it comes to meal planning or ideas for appetizers or whatever. Just an inspiration is all I ask. Sometimes PW prepares a dish that I have made in the past (or something similar), and the idea just clicks. Sometimes the TV recipe might be a nice variation of what I already prepare, so I can tweak my recipe. Sometimes I learn a nice presentation. Just because the cooking itself is pedestrian doesn't mean that I (not exactly harried, not a true "enthusiast", either, at least not every day) don't pick up inspiration. When I'm wandering around the grocery store and some clerk asks what I am looking for, I just say "Inspiration." Gets a laugh and they leave me alone.

When you do home food storage like I do, old beans can be a challenge if you don't rotate your stock in a timely manner. Add to that, you can't always be sure when your beans were harvested and how long, and under what conditions, they have been warehoused before you purchased them and place them into storage. Beans store best in cool temperatures away from heat and light. Since the original posting of this thread I've added two more methods for preparing them to my arsenal of choices. The first method is sprouting them before cooking and the second method is brining. "Sprouting decreases the total carb content and the starch content, increases the dietary fiber and increases the digestibility." Sprouting beans takes the "noise" out of them. If the beans won't sprout well, then they are too old for cooking using standard cooking methods and I'll mill them into bean flour and use them that way. I now sprout all lentils before cooking to increase the nutrition, and I will also sprout them and then dehydrate them for even faster cooking times. Brining is a method I learned watching America's Test Kitchen (link below). I especially like brining when I use the beans whole in a salad or entree and I want a creamy soft bean that doesn't blow apart during cooking. A couple other things to note after re-reading this thread - the minerals in hard water affect beans and adding baking soda is a way to neutralize hard water. However, "Amounts of baking soda over 1Ã¢ÂÂ8 teaspoon per cup of beans may destroy the thiamine (Vitamin B1) in beans. Thiamine is a valuable nutrient and one reason why beans have a reputation for being nutritious." So using bottled or filtered water (not distilled) may be the best answer for anyone who has hard water to contend with. -Grainlady Here is a link that might be useful: How to Brine Beans

Hey, I was thinking about doing some chili this week too. Probably for Friday night before Trick r Treating. Warm us up good before we head out into the cold. I'm baking again today now that I have my oven. Still trying to get rid of zucchini. ha Will it never end??? AAAAhhhh. ha I've got some pork chop soup cooking in the crock for supper tonight. Hoping I can get lots done today so I'll have time to paint tomorrow. We had 3 different people come visit us yesterday after church at different times so I didn't get to paint any. Anyway, I'm trying to clean out computer files to free up some space in between cooking and laundry so I'd better get back to it. I've got to take the kids shopping for costumes after they get home from school so I've got to get everything done before then. Halloween sure sneaked up on me. ha They need their costumes by Thursday because we have Trunk r Treat at church that night. It's pretty fun. Hope you can get your project looking the way you want it. Sorry you aren't feeling better. Mine is gone except for some minor sniffles. Nobody else seems to have gotten it. I just want to know who's playing the Marlboro Man! I clicked on Jenni's link and it says the movie is based on her book, "Black Heels to Tractor Wheels" and not the blog. Either way, I think Reese Witherspoon is just about the cutest thing ever.

I like her cooking...but a couple of things on her blog left me feeling rather not so crazy about her. One was a picture of a "rattlesnake" they came across on the ranch. It was a diamond back water snake...totally harmless. A picture of a baby possum with it's eyes barely open..."climbing" a tree. Impossible. And a picture of another possum that had obviously had it's mouth tied shut before it's photo session.
I've seen the exact same thing in possums taken to the shelter. Pathetic, in my opinion. No excuse to hurt innocent creatures just to make a story about them.

Maybe someday they'll be making a movie about me....heeehee!

I tell dh all the time that someday my blog will be so well-known it will support our family...like dooce.com......hey! it doesn't hurt to dream! LOL!

That's so cool. I love Pdub. She's a hoot. DH uses her cookbook more than I do. Have made several of her recipes and they are all sooooo good.

Marilyn C...I have no clue what the differences are with rattlesnakes and a diamond back water snake, but I think the photo of the older possum in her story in 2006 was a stock photo as she was re-counting a story from her youth. So maybe the previously bound mouth on the possum wasn't done on her ranch?

I've been a big fan of hers since she started her blog and am pleased she's getting this attention...she's very straight forward and entertaining on so many levels :) She's obviously filling a niche that a whole lot of people enjoy. Kudos to her!

I have to admit I am not a fan of Pioneer Woman.

My main gripe is the way she promoted the wild horses on their Ranch. It wasn't until recently she did admit those horses belong to the BLM (a federal agency) and that the ranch receives big bucks for taking care of them. She made it seem as if the ranch was feeding them out of the goodness of their hearts when in fact not only are they paid well per horse per year they also receive tax credit and deductions for the hay they raise to feed them. This is not something a typical ranch has the opportunity to do and it rubs me the wrong way that millions think THIS is the typical life of a ranch wife. Her DIL Missy is the real rancher's wife. As far as Ree being a pioneer?....I can't think of anything nice to say so I won't....

Marilyn makes a good point about PW and not just the snakes and the possum. 'Contrived' is the word that comes to my mind to describe Ree Drummond. I do like some of her recipes and I learned lots about photoshop but any more her site leaves me cold so I don't read there anymore.
