so really, what does it take to become a kitchen designer?

i've decided i could put anyone who calls themselves such a thing in my area out of business. i interviewed one local designer and every kitchen in his portfolio looked like the last. there was absolutely no thought involved. it seems as if his work was driven by formula. stick in a suite of appliances by viking or wolf and you've got yourself a kitchen. counter tops were all polished granite. no soapstone, marble or wood. nothing honed or antiqued or with a leather finish. how is this possible? do people really not care? please don't get me wrong, it's not as if the kitchens were unattractive. but i saw at least 50 kitchens and they all had the same materials and finishes. how do these people stay in business? how does one go about becoming a kitchen designer anyway? what does one make if serving a filthy rich community?
